The William Wakefield Memorial is a rare New Zealand example of an early memorial commemorating one of the original European settlers. It was ordered in 1850, some time after the death of William Wakefield, an important but controversial agent for the New Zealand Company. It was not put up until 1882, but even after then, it was rare to commemorate settlers with a memorial. Originally placed in the Basin Reserve, the main cricket ground in Wellington, it was relocated to outside the cricket ground, before being restored in 2006 by Wellington City Council and placed close to its original location.

The Basin Reserve, officially known as the Cello Basin Reserve for sponsorship reasons, and commonly referred to as the Basin, is a cricket ground in Wellington, New Zealand. It has been used for Test matches, and is the main home ground for the Wellington Firebirds first-class team. The Basin Reserve is the only cricket ground to have New Zealand Historic Place status (Category 2) as it is the oldest Test cricket ground in the country. The ground has been used for events other than cricket, such as concerts, sports events and other social gatherings, but now it is mostly used for cricket, particularly Test matches. The New Zealand Cricket Museum is located in the Old Grandstand. It houses cricket memorabilia and a reference library. It opened in 1987, and was relaunched in 2021.

St. Joseph's Church is a modern Catholic church opened in 2004 located in the central city suburb of Mt Victoria, Wellington, New Zealand, on the eastern side of the Basin Reserve.

The Wellington City Archives preserves records of the Wellington City Council and other organisations relating to the history of Wellington, New Zealand. Established in 1994, the Council archives were housed in a single purpose-built facility in 1995, opened to the public in 1996, and made available online since 2007. The archives are open to the public and receive up to 1000 information requests a month, from Wellington City Council staff and the general public. About half of the requests are building consent searches, and up to 300 are assisting council staff preparing Land Information Memorandums (LIM). The remainder range from historical and genealogical research requests to enquiries about land history or property information.

St Mark's Church School is an independent Anglican co-educational school in Wellington, New Zealand for children aged from two (Early Childhood) to Year 8. The school is often seen on cricket match broadcasts from Basin Reserve. To its front is the modern, 1970s-era church building, the parish church to which the school is attached. A wooden church stood in its place prior to the 1970s redevelopment. Its first principal was Miss Annie Holm, who served the school until the 1940s, aided by her sister. The school's library is named after her. The Rev Ronald Kirby was another long-serving and influential principal, from 1971 to his death in 1982; the school's main block is named in his honour. The vicar of St. Mark's Church, Rev. Matthew Calder, taught Religious Education for all that time, and presided over Rev. Kirby's funeral; another block is named the Calder Block for him.

The United States Navy maintained a number of naval installations in New Zealand during the Pacific War of World War II. Many were built by the US Navy Seabees, Naval Construction Battalions, during as part of the Pacific War. New Zealand was used for staging and training troops before action and for R&R-rest and recreation after action. The Red Cross operated five dinning clubs. For the wounded, there were 19 hospitals in New Zealand that could handle up to 10,000 patients. Most Naval activities were at Naval Base Auckland and Naval Base Wellington. The bases were closed in 1944 as troops moved to more northern US bases.

Elliott House is a historic building in Wellington, New Zealand. The house was built for James Sands Elliott, a medical professional, in 1913. The north side served as the family residence, while the Kent Terrace side served as his consultancy room and surgery. The building was renovated in 1988.The building is classified as a "Category I" ("places of special or outstanding historical or cultural heritage significance or value") historic place by Heritage New Zealand.

Wellington City Council is a territorial authority in New Zealand, governing the country's capital city Wellington, and de facto second-largest city (if the commonly considered parts of Wellington, the Upper Hutt, Porirua, Lower Hutt and often the Kapiti Coast, are taken into account; these, however have independent councils rather than a supercity governance like Auckland, and so Wellington City is legally only third-largest city by population, behind Auckland and Christchurch). It consists of the central historic town and certain additional areas within the Wellington metropolitan area, extending as far north as Linden and covering rural areas such as Mākara and Ohariu. The city adjoins Porirua in the north and Hutt City in the north-east. It is one of nine territorial authorities in the Wellington Region. Wellington attained city status in 1886. The settlement had become the colonial capital and seat of government by 1865, replacing Auckland. Parliament officially sat in Wellington for the first time on 26 July 1865. During the last half of the nineteenth century, Wellington grew rapidly from 7,460 residents in 1867 to 49,344 by the end of the century.The council represents a population of 213,100 as of June 2022 and consists of a mayor and fifteen councillors elected from six wards (Northern, Onslow-Western, Lambton, Eastern, Southern general wards and Te Whanganui-a-Tara Māori ward). It administers public works, sanitation, land use and building consents, among other local services. The council has used the marketing slogan "Absolutely Positively Wellington" in an official capacity since the early 1990s.

The Tomb of the Unknown Warrior is part of the New Zealand National War Memorial on Buckle Street, Wellington. On 6 November 2004, the remains of an unknown New Zealand soldier were exhumed from the (CWGC) Caterpillar Valley Cemetery, and laid to rest in the Tomb of the Unknown Warrior in Wellington, New Zealand. He represents over 18,000 members of New Zealand forces who lost their lives during the First World War. A special headstone marks his original resting place in Plot 14, Row A, Grave 27.

Pukeahu National War Memorial Park, also known as Pukeahu Park, is situated in front of the National War Memorial in the suburb of Mt Cook, Wellington, New Zealand. It opened on 18 April 2015 in time for the centenary of the World War I Gallipoli landings, and was one of the New Zealand Government's key projects to commemorate the 100th anniversary of World War I. The hill where the memorial was built was named 'Pukeahu' by the Ngāi Tara iwi (tribe).In May 2004, Prime Minister Helen Clark said, A park would further enhance the area which is already being redeveloped with the building of the Tomb of the Unknown Warrior. It will provide a more appropriate setting for New Zealand's memorial to those New Zealanders who gave their lives in times of war. Significant aspects of our heritage and identity were forged in difficult times of conflict...this is illustrated by the growing numbers of people who attend Anzac Day services in New Zealand.

The National War Memorial of New Zealand is located next to the Dominion Museum building on Buckle Street, in Wellington, the nation's capital. The war memorial was dedicated in 1932 on Anzac Day (25 April) in commemoration of the First World War. It also officially remembers the New Zealanders who gave their lives in the South African War, World War II and the wars in Korea, Malaysia and Vietnam. The War Memorial consists of the War Memorial Carillon, the Hall of Memories, and an unknown New Zealand warrior interred in a tomb constructed in 2004 in front of the Hall of Memories. Four Rolls of Honour bear the names and ranks of 28,654 New Zealanders. Lyndon Smith's bronze statue of a family group is the focal point for the complex, which in 2018, after refurbishment, was said to have 60,000 visitors per year.The carillon and Hall of Memories closed for earthquake strengthening and refurbishment in 2012. The Hall of Memories reopened in 2015 and the carillon in 2018, but both were closed again in February 2020 for further work and are not expected to reopen until mid-2027. In January 2023 The Ministry for Culture and Heritage announced that it was considering placing the War Memorial (the carillon, Hall of Memories and Tomb of the Unknown Warrior) on to its National Historic Landmark list which was launched in 2019.

Wellington College, is a state-run boys secondary school in Wellington, New Zealand. It is situated in 12 hectares of green belt land in the suburb of Mount Victoria, in the vicinity of the Basin Reserve and Government House. The school was founded in 1876 through a deed of endowment from Sir George Grey, the then Governor of New Zealand. Wellington College is one of the oldest boys' secondary schools in New Zealand. The history and influence of Wellington College have made it notable in the history of New Zealand, with prominent alumni such as Arthur Coningham, Bernard Freyberg and William Pickering. The school is known nationally for both its academic success, as well as a large number of sporting activities. The school has an enrolment of about 1750 boys. Glen Denham is the current Headmaster.
