Barreta Island (Portuguese: Ilha da Barretta) is an island in Algarve, Portugal, about 7 kilometres (4.3 mi) long and 50 to 600 metres (160 to 1,970 ft) wide. Barreta is also known as Deserta, Deserted Island or Santa Maria Cape Island. Is one of the more isolated islands in Algarve. There is a public ferry line reaching the island everyday, all year round or it can be reached by renting or owning a boat. In this island is located the southernmost point of continental Portugal, Cabo de Santa Maria. A beach on the island is used by naturists.

The Ria Formosa lagoon, located in the Algarve, in southern Portugal, is a system of barrier islands that connects to the sea through six inlets. Five of these inlets are natural and have mobility characteristics. The sixth is an artificial inlet that was opened with the purpose of allowing easier access to the port of Faro. In 2010, the lagoon was recognised as one of the country’s seven natural wonders. Following a public vote in which 656,356 voted, the Ria Formosa was announced the winner of the Marine Area category of the ‘7 Maravilhas Naturais de Portugal’.Presently the main inlet of the system is the Faro-Olhão inlet, which is an artificial construction. The process started in 1927 but it was only in 1952 that the engineering works were completed and it assumed the present configuration. Part of the system is a 170 km² protected natural area, but Ria Formosa also plays an important role in the region's economy. Beyond the tourist use the system also supports other economic activities like seafood farms (including grooved carpet shell harvesting) and the port of Faro. Besides being a natural park, Ria Formosa is classified as a Ramsar site. It is also listed by BirdLife International as an Important Bird Area, both in its lagoon area with 23,296 hectares and the oceanic zone with 19,900 hectares. It serves as a stopping place for migratory birds during the spring and autumn migratory periods. The most important cities near the Ria Formosa are Tavira, Faro and Olhão.

Culatra Island is a barrier island located in the Ria Formosa in the Algarve region of Portugal. It has an approximate population of around 700 people divided across three communities of Farol, Hângares and Culatra.

Faro Cathedral (Portuguese: Sé de Faro) is a Roman Catholic cathedral in Faro, Portugal. The cathedral was consecrated in the name of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the late 13th century by the Archbishop of Braga. It has been the seat of the Diocese of Faro since 1540, replacing Silves Cathedral on the orders of King John III of Portugal. In 1596 the church was destroyed by the Earl of Essex. The cathedral is a National Monument of Portugal.

The Diocese of Faro (Latin: Dioecesis Pharaonensis), also called the Diocese of the Algarve and formerly the Diocese of Silves, is a suffragan of the archdiocese of Évora. The current bishop of Faro is Dom Manuel Neto Quintas.

Faro District (Portuguese: Distrito de Faro [ˈfaɾu] (listen)) is the southernmost district of Portugal. The area is the same as that of the Algarve region. The administrative centre, or district capital, is the city of Faro.

Faro ( FAR-oh, Portuguese: [ˈfaɾu] (listen)) is a municipality, the southernmost city and capital of the district of the same name, in the Algarve region of southern Portugal. With an estimated population of 60,995 inhabitants in 2019 (with 39,733 inhabitants in the city proper, making it the biggest city and second most populous municipality in the Algarve (after Loulé) and one of the biggest in Southern Portugal), the municipality covers an area of about 202.57 km2 (78.21 sq mi).

The University of Algarve (UAlg), founded in 1979, is a Portuguese public higher education institution located in the southernmost region of mainland Portugal, the Algarve, having its headquarters and two out of its three campuses in Faro (namely the Gambelas and Penha) and another campus in Portimão.

São Luís Stadium, also known as Estádio Municipal de São Luís, is a multi-use stadium located in Faro, Algarve, Portugal. It serves as the home stadium for Sporting Clube Farense, a football club based in Faro. The stadium was opened in 1923 and has a seating capacity of around 12,000 spectators. It was continuously used by Farense from 1924, when it became the club's main tenant until 2004 when Farense relocated to the newly built Algarve Stadium. However, since 2013, Farense has returned to playing their home matches at the renovated São Luís Stadium.Throughout its history, São Luís Stadium has been an important venue for Sporting Clube Farense, witnessing numerous memorable moments for the club. It has also hosted various lower division matches and local football events. While not as prominent as some of Portugal's larger stadiums, São Luís Stadium holds a cherished and historic place in the city of Faro, contributing to the local football culture.

The Capela dos Ossos (English: Chapel of Bones) is an ossuary chapel in Faro, Portugal, which belongs to the 18th century Carmelite church Nossa Senhora do Carmo. Above the entrance, there is the following inscription: Pára aqui a considerar que a este estado hás-de chegarwhich translates to Stop here and consider, that you will reach this state too.The 4 by 6 meter sized chapel is built of the bones of more than 1000 Carmelite friars and has been inaugurated in 1816. It is situated behind the main church and contains also 1245 skulls.

Faro station (Portuguese: Estação de Faro) is the main railway station in the city of Faro, Portugal, operated by Comboios de Portugal. It opened on 1 July 1889. The line to the north-west is electrified, using overhead catenary, the line east, to the terminus at Vila Real de Santo António, is not. In 1999, following the creation of a rail crossing over the River Tagus at Lisbon, the Alfa Pendular high speed electric tilting train service was introduced on the Braga-Oporto-Lisbon-Faro line, with through trains south of Lisbon starting in 2003. Faro currently receives Alfa Pendular, Intercities and regional trains.Although Seville is less than 200km away, Faro does not have any railway connection crossing the border to Spain.

Olhão (Portuguese pronunciation: [oˈʎɐ̃w] (listen)), officially known as Olhão da Restauração, is a city and municipality in the Algarve region of southern Portugal. The population of the municipality in 2011 was 45,396, in an area of 130.86 km2 (50.53 sq mi). Located near the regional capital Faro and forming a single urban agglomeration, it is a fishing port and tourist center. Along with Faro, Loulé and Tavira, Olhão forms a conurbation from the eastern and central Algarve.
