Helsingborg

Helsingborg Municipality (Helsingborgs kommun) is a municipality in Scania County in Sweden. Its seat is located in the city of Helsingborg, which is Sweden's eighth largest city. The municipality had a population of 147,734 on January 1, 2019, and the metro has about 320,000 inhabitants. Between 1912 and 1971 the name of the town was officially spelled Hälsingborg (rather like the region of Hälsingland but unlike neighbouring Danish Helsingør and the Finnish capital Helsingfors (Helsinki)). The spelling was changed back to the older version when the present municipality was created in 1971 through the amalgamation of the Town of Hälsingborg with four surrounding rural municipalities. Since the 1990s the municipality again styles itself Helsingborgs stad (Town of Helsingborg). This usage is only nominal and has no effect on the status of the municipality.

Olympia, sometimes referred to as Olympiastadion (English: Olympic Stadium), is a football stadium in Helsingborg, Sweden. It was opened in 1898, but has been rebuilt in 1993, 1997 and 2014–2017, and has a capacity of 16,000 (14,000 seated and 2,000 standing). All stands can be converted into seaters, giving a capacity of around 15,000. It is the home ground of Superettan side Helsingborgs IF. On October 22, 2014 the Helsingborg City Council, who owns Olympia, unanimously voted to renovate and rebuild the stadium. The construction will start after the 2014 Allsvenskan season and will be finished in early to mid 2017. This will be the fourth updating of the arena since 1985. Before 1985 the arena was in a dreadful state with athletic running tracks, wooden stands, and a very poor lighting system. The name of this arena has no actual connection to the Olympic Games, but since the modern Olympic's started in 1896 and Olympia was opened two years later, it seems a possible thought that the name was influenced by the at the time renewed Olympic Games. The record for attendance is 26,154 and was set 14 May 1954, when Helsingborgs IF played Malmö FF. In 1958 the stadium hosted two FIFA World Cup matches, and seven matches in FIFA Women's World Cup 1995. At the Helsingborgs IF matches Hey Jude by The Beatles is played during halftime and when Helsingborgs IF win a game What a Beautiful Day by The Levellers is played.

Idrottens Hus is an arena venue in Helsingborg, Sweden. The stadium was built in 1957.

Högaborg is a district of the Swedish city of Helsingborg situated south of the town center and east of Söder. It is inhabited by about 4,000 people, more than half of them immigrants. It is the home of the football club Högaborgs BK, where football player Henrik Larsson played during his youth. He rejoined the club in 2013, 21 years after his first spell ended.

Helsingborg Arena is a multipurpose arena in Helsingborg, Sweden, run by and associated with the municipal companies Helsingborg Events and Idrottspark AB and Helsingborg Arena and Scen AB, respectively.

Filbornaskolan is a school located in the outskirts of Helsingborg in Sweden. The school hosts a number of programmes, with a focus on sports. Notable former alumni include Henrik Larsson.

Simhallsbadet is a swimming venue in Helsingborg. It hosts a 25 m swimming pool, another smaller pool and a sauna. The building was designed by the Swedish architect Mogens Mogensen and completed in 1941. Mogensen had presented the plans in 1936; it was built between 1939 and 1941. Simhallsbadet was built as part of a project to address sanitation problems in south Helsingborg. The building is built in brown Helsingborg brick. The entrance part is built in a functionalistic style, while the pool section has a vaulted copper roof and a glass facade facing the street Carl Krooks gata. The building was renovated in 2001.

The Battle of Helsingborg was the last major engagement of the Great Northern War to take place on Swedish soil, and resulted in a decisive victory of a Swedish force of 14,000 men under the command of Magnus Stenbock against a Danish force of equal strength under the command of Jørgen Rantzau, ensuring that Denmark's final effort to regain the Scanian territories that it had lost to Sweden in 1658 failed. The battle was fought on March 10, 1710, in the province of Scania, just outside the city of Helsingborg, and directly on the Ringstorp heights just north-east of the city.Denmark-Norway had been forced out of the Great Northern War by the Treaty of Traventhal in 1700, but had long planned on reopening hostilities with the goal of reconquering the lost provinces Scania, Halland and Blekinge. After the Swedish defeat at Poltava in 1709, the Danes saw an opportunity and declared war on Sweden the same year. The declaration of war arrived at the Swedish state council on October 18, 1709. The pretext given was that Sweden had been intentionally trying to avoid paying the Sound Dues, and that the population of Scania, Halland, Blekinge and Bohuslän had been mistreated by the Swedish.In January 1710 the Danish invasion force defeated a smaller Swedish force outside Kristianstad in a small skirmish. On March 10, 1710, the Danish force finally engaged the Swedish army, which had been hastily drafted from the surrounding regions to try to resist the Danes. The Swedish cavalry carried the day during the engagement, with the Danish lines crumbling and retreating under repeated charges. The battle proved to be a total rout for the Danes, with more than half of their force killed, wounded or captured. The battle ended any hopes for the Scanian territories to return to Danish rule, and the territories became a permanent part of Sweden.

The Elineberg Housing development (Swedish: Elinebergshusen) consists of six high-rise apartment buildings located in the residential area of Elineberg in Helsingborg, south-western Sweden. Completed in 1965, the 13 to 15 storey towers were designed by the Danish award-winning architect Jørn Utzon who, at the time, was working in Helsingborg with the Swedish architectural firm Arton in conjunction with architects Erik and Henry Andersson.

Helsingborg Central Station or 'Helsingborg C', also colloquially known as Knutpunkten is the primary railway station in Helsingborg. It is a transit hub for ferries, long-distance trains (SJ), Öresundståg, Pågatåg, city- and regional buses. It is one of Sweden's busiest transit hub facilities. The railway station is the eleventh largest in Sweden with 24,100 passengers per weekday (2016). This includes passengers on the ferry and bus services. In total, Knutpunkten is visited by approximately 45,000 people daily. The building is a large complex that also contains restaurants, pubs, shops and office space. Next to Knutpunkten is the contemporary Elite Hotel Marina Plaza with 197 rooms. As a railway station, it is one of the largest station buildings in Sweden and one of Sweden's eight stations with underground railway tracks in the Helsingborg Tunnel. There are two platforms underground (four tracks). There is also a platform above ground, which, however, is not in regular use but is used for parking trains. It will be opened for regular trains during 2024. The building also contains several administrative functions for the city of Helsingborg such as the City Building Administration, and since 2016 also an office hotel for business activities.

Teknik på farfars tid is a privately owned museum dedicated to technology of the early 20th century in Helsingborg, Sweden. The museum was founded by Bengt Strand in 1970, and contains thousands of items: from veteran cars and motorcycles, to radios and toys. Bengt Strand received the Cultural Award of Helsingborg in 1989.

Maria Station is a railway station for commuter trains located on the West Coast Line in the northern parts of Helsingborg, Sweden. The station was inaugurated in 1999 and currently consists of two platforms and two tracks. The local trains (Pågatåg) serve the station. It is one of three passenger railway stations located in the city of Helsingborg, along with Helsingborg C and Ramlösa Station, of which it is the northernmost situated railway station of the city.
