Howard County General Hospital is a 225-bed, not-for-profit health care provider located in Columbia, Maryland.

Elioak is an unincorporated community in Howard County, Maryland, United States. It was the home of the "Pushpin Farm", a 200-acre slave plantation purchased in 1724 in the Howard District of Anne Arundel County by Col. Edward Dorsey and which is the site of many prominent Dorsey family graves. The postal community was named after the Elioak plantation built by Owen Dorsey, Judge of the Baltimore Orphans' Court. A postal office operated in the community from 12 June 1893 to 15 September 1922. Local farm orchards were known for prize winning apples and pears. Local families such as the Kahler, Miller, and Worthington claimed Elioak as home while they served in World War I. After the war, the name fell out of use.The road from Elioak to Simpsonville was resurveyed in 1820 as part of Charles Carroll's 13,000 acre Doughoregan Manor, with a stone inscription that read, "There stand the beginning trees of Doughoregan, Push Pin and the Girl's Portion". It would become paved in the early 1900s to form Route 108. The interior of the curving road formed the unofficial western boundary targeted for public water and sewer, as well as the area purchased by land speculators for the Rouse Company development of Columbia. The exterior forms the rural boundary of Howard County targeted for preservation though easements created by Senator Clark of Elioak Farm in the 1980s.

Howard Community College (HCC or Howard CC) is a public community college in Columbia, Maryland. It offers classes for credit in more than 100 programs, non-credit classes, and workforce development programs. In addition to the main campus in Columbia, courses are also held at two satellite campuses.

Homewood Center, also known as Homewood School, is a public secondary institution in Ellicott City, Maryland, United States; it is part of the Howard County Public School System. The school hosts nontraditional classroom programs for Howard County students in grades 6-12.

Wilde Lake High School is a secondary school located in Columbia, Maryland's Village of Wilde Lake, United States, one of 13 public high schools in Howard County. The school is centrally located in Howard County, and its district borders that of River Hill High School, Marriotts Ridge High School, Centennial High School, Howard High School, Oakland Mills High School, and Atholton High School.

Edgewood Farm is a historic farm located at Ellicott City next to Clarksville and Columbia, Howard County, Maryland, United States. The historic 253 acre farm is affiliated with the Dorsey, Clark and Gaither families of Howard County. The property was once part of the Charles Carroll Estate. A wood framed farm house was built onsite, as well as a stone barn. A nineteenth century onsite cemetery contains the remains of several of the Clark and Dorsey family. On 18 May 1833, William Gibbons inherited the property in a trust before the formation of Howard County from Anne Arundel County. The property was conveyed to Michael Dorsey, then Owen Dorsey. The farm passed ownership several times to Mr and Mrs. W. Clark Gaither. The county's only major aircraft incident occurred at Homewood in 1962. A Vickers Viscount disabled by a bird strike crashed on the farm killing all aboard.By 1978 the property was subdivided to just 92 acres. The remaining farm has been subdivided for residential development and for use by the Howard County Public School system. The farmhouse was demolished for new house construction with the stone barn retained as a residential car garage. The Gaither farm is also referenced as the "Homewood" farm after the Baltimore Estate of the Carroll Family.

Clark's Elioak Farm, located along Maryland Route 108 in Howard County, Maryland, is a historic farm covering 540 acres. All of the acreage is part of county or state farmland protection programs, barring use of the property for non-farm development. The Clarks, a family with a tradition of farming in Maryland spanning seven generations, have owned the Elioak farm since 1927.The name, Elioak, refers to a type of silty clay loam common to the slopes and summits of hills in the northern portion of the Piedmont Plateau. Elioak soil is deep, well-drained, and moderately permeable, making it suitable for apple orchards. Elioak was also listed as a former turn of the century Howard County postal village.In recent years, the Elioak Farm has become a petting zoo and the venue for restoration of the former Enchanted Forest.

The Chemical Propulsion Information Analysis Center (CPIAC) is one of several United States Department of Defense (DoD) sponsored Information Analysis Centers (IACs), administered by the Defense Technical Information Center (DTIC). CPIAC is the oldest IAC, having been in continuous operation since 1946 when it was founded as the Rocket Propellant Information Agency as part of the Johns Hopkins University's Applied Physics Laboratory. Currently CPIAC is operated by The Johns Hopkins University, Whiting School of Engineering. IACs are part of the DoD’s Scientific and Technical Information Program (STIP) prescribed by DoD Directive 3200.12 and are chartered under DoD Instruction 3200.14-E5.CPIAC is the U.S. national clearinghouse and technical resource center for data, reports, and analyses related to system and component level technologies for chemical, electrical, and nuclear propulsion for rockets, missiles, and space and gun propulsion systems. CPIAC also provides technical and administrative support to the Joint Army-Navy-NASA-Air Force (JANNAF) Interagency Propulsion Committee, the primary technical information exchange platform for the U.S. propulsion industry.In addition to maintaining the most comprehensive propulsion-related scientific and technical reports collection in the world, CPIAC maintains a number of industry handbooks, manuals, databases, and its signature Propulsion Information Retrieval System (PIRS). This extensive information collection represents the documented national knowledge base in chemical rocket propulsion and is available for dissemination to eligible individuals and organizations.As a knowledgeable and objective participant in supporting industry research and development, CPIAC assists sponsors in maximizing increasingly limited research and development funding by focusing on key propulsion system technology needs through workshops, symposia, technical assessments, and surveys. CPIAC also performs research in support of its publication of a series of recurrent technology reviews and state-of-the-art reports in selected technical areas.

Wilde Lake is a man-made drainage reservoir dug in 1966 and the name of the surrounding "village" of neighborhoods located in Columbia, Maryland, just north and west of Columbia Town Center. The village was the first part of Columbia's "New Town" to be built in the late 1960s, James W. Rouse and Frazar B. Wilde formally opened the neighborhood on June 21, 1967. The lake and village are named for Frazar B. Wilde, a past chairman of the board of Connecticut General Life Insurance Company and former employer of James Rouse. In 1963, the company agreed to fund the secret land purchases and, in return, acquired an equity participation. This arrangement was subsequently formalized by the creation of The Howard Research and Development Corporation, the joint venture established to develop Columbia.

United Air Lines Flight 297 was a scheduled flight from Newark International Airport to Atlanta that crashed 10 miles (16 km) southwest of Baltimore on November 23, 1962, killing all 17 people on board. An investigation concluded that the aircraft, a Vickers Viscount 745D turboprop airliner, had struck at least two whistling swans, which caused severe damage to the plane, resulting in a loss of control. The accident resulted in a greater understanding of the amount of damage that can be caused by bird strikes during flight. As a result, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued new safety regulations that required newly certified aircraft to be able to better withstand in-flight impacts with birds without affecting the aircraft's ability to fly or land safely.

The Middle Patuxent Environmental Area (MPEA) is a 1,021-acre (4.13 km2) wildlife area in Clarksville, Maryland and operated by the Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks. It is located next to the River Hill village in the town of Columbia, Maryland, in the United States. The MPEA was created in 1996 for educational, research, and recreational purposes.

The William Johnson House is a historic house supporting Doughoregan Manor in Ellicott City, Maryland. The Johnson house is a historic located on land that was patented to Charles Carroll the Settler in 1702. The property was part of the 7000 acre Carroll family slave plantation Doughoreagan Manor, most notable as home of Charles Carroll of Carrollton, signer of the declaration of Independence. The William E. Johnson home was a two-story "L" shaped house of wood construction built prior to 1880. The wide central chimney was typical of earlier construction. The house was situated on a 112-acre subdivision of the manor bordering a farm owned by Phillip Carroll, and James A. Clark, Jr.'s Elioak Farm. The house was documented in 1979, but was demolished by 1982.In 1988, owners Thomas and Mary Scrivener place the farm into Howard County's agricultural preservation program. In 2004, they split the farm into two separate 50 acre farms. In 2012 owners E Randolph and Mary Marriner, petitioned to build a house over the original house site. The estate was renamed to Manor Hill Farms, and in 2014 the Howard County Economic Development Agency awarded a $200,000 grant to open Manor Hill Brewery onsite.
