Alcalá de Henares

The Cathedral of St Justus and St Pastor in Alcalá de Henares (Spanish: Catedral de los Santos Niños Justo y Pastor de Alcalá de Henares) is a Roman Catholic cathedral located in Alcalá de Henares, Spain. It was declared Bien de Interés Cultural in 1904. The Carrillo archbishop (1446-1482), elevated the church to the rank of collegiate church. The current building was designed during the time of Cardinal Cisneros (1495-1517) he was awarded the title of "Master" and the current building was designed and constructed between 1497 and 1515 in late Gothic style typical of the age. The tower was built between 1528 and 1582. In 1904 the cathedral was declared a National Monument. During the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) the church was burned losing virtually all its treasures, saving some bars and some chairs from the old choir. In 1991 the diocese of Alcalá restored and elevated to the status of cathedral-master, the Diocese Complutense recovering that which was from the 5th century until 1099.

The Diocese of Alcalá de Henares (Latin: Compluten(sis)) is a Latin Church ecclesiastical territory or diocese of the Catholic Church in Spain. Its episcopal see is Alcalá de Henares. The diocese is a suffragan in the ecclesiastical province of the metropolitan Archdiocese of Madrid.

The Irish College of San Jorge at Alcalá de Henares, was founded about 1648, from the estate of Baron George Sylveira (Baron Jorge de la Paz y Silveira), a Portuguese nobleman, related to the McDonnells of Ulster through his mother. After the baron died, his widow Beatriz Silveira implemented his wishes and the College came into existence. Alcalá de Henares is a town to the northeast of Madrid, where the Complutense University was situated. The college and its chapel were dedicated to St. George, and were formally known as the Royal Irish College of St. George the Martyr, Alcala (Spanish: Real Colegio de San Jorge Myrtir de los Irlandeses). Students would study for seven years, Theology and Arts with the college was affiliated to the Complutense University of Madrid (which moved to Madrid, eventually reopening a branch in Alcala as the University of Alcalá), aimed at training clerics for Ireland, Belgium(Flanders) and The Netherlands. The Irish Franciscan Luke Wadding, O.F.M. wrote the statutes for the college. The first rector of the college was Rev. Godfrey Daniel.In 1767 following the expulsion of the Jesuits, an attempt was made to merge the Royal Scots College in Madrid with the Irish College at Alcala, and the assets of the Scots college were transferred to the Irish College by Royal decree. This merger was annulled by decree in 1771 and the Royal Scots College re-established at Valladolid.

Corral de Comedias de Alcalá de Henares in Alcalá de Henares, Community of Madrid, Spain, is one of the oldest preserved theatres in Europe. Built in 1601–02 and designed to mirror the Corral de la Cruz in Madrid, the architect was Francisco Sánchez.It was built as a corral de comedias, a courtyard theatre. However, it is no longer an open-air theater, like the Corral de comedias de Almagro, having been given a roof in a rebuilding in 1769. Following use as a teatro romántico in the 19th century, and a cinema in the early 20th century, which led to major changes in the building's architecture, the building has been restored.

The Archiepiscopal Palace of Alcalá de Henares (Spanish: Palacio Arzobispal de Alcalá de Henares) is a palace located in Alcalá de Henares, in the Community of Madrid, Spain. It is now home to the Diocese of Alcalá de Henares. It is located in the Plaza del Palacio and this form part of the monumental set declared World Heritage Site by UNESCO.The building complex dates from 1209. Two thirds were destroyed in a devastating fire in 1939, during the Spanish Civil War. The part of the building which is preserved is what is left intact after the 1939 fire, the damaged parts were not restored.In this building came to reside different Castilian monarchs, were held synods and councils, and in here were born the youngest daughter of the Catholic Monarchs and future queen of England, Catherine of Aragon, and the German Emperor Ferdinand, son of Joanna "the Mad". In addition, it is famous for being the place where the first meeting between the Catholic Monarchs and Christopher Columbus was held.

The Regional Archaeological Museum (Spanish: Museo Arqueológico Regional; MAR) or Archaeological Museum of the Community of Madrid is an archaeological museum in Alcalá de Henares, Spain, dependent on the regional administration of the Community of Madrid.

The Colegio Mayor de San Ildefonso (Spanish: Colegio Mayor de San Ildefonso) is a building located in Alcalá de Henares, Spain. It was declared Bien de Interés Cultural in 1914.It was built by Cardinal Cisneros who commissioned architect Pedro de Gumiel to design. The foundation stone was laid in 1499, the Saint Ildefonsus` Chapel was completed in 1510; in 1516 began construction of the Paraninfo (Auditorium) and in 1537 Rodrigo Gil de Hontañón designed the main façade. Although most of the work had been carried out by 1617 when Juan Gómez de Mora redesigned the courtyard (Thomas of Villanova's courtyard), the construction was not finished until the second half of the 17th century.

The University of Alcalá (Spanish: Universidad de Alcalá) is a public university located in Alcalá de Henares, a city 35 km (22 miles) northeast of Madrid in Spain and also the third-largest city of the region. It was founded in 1293 as a Studium Generale for the public, and was refounded in 1977. The University of Alcalá is especially renowned in the Spanish-speaking world for its annual presentation of the highly prestigious Cervantes Prize. The university currently enrolls 28,336 students, 17,252 of whom are studying for undergraduate degrees, who are taught by a teaching staff of 2,608 professors, lecturers and researchers belonging to 24 departments. The administrative tasks are carried out by the university's Administration and Services, comprising approximately 800 people.One of the university's campuses, located in the city center, is housed partly in historic buildings which were once used by the Complutense University of Madrid, which was located in Alcalá from its medieval origins until it was moved to Madrid in 1836.

Complutum was an ancient Roman city located in the present-day city of Alcalá de Henares, Spain. It has been partially excavated and the impressive remains can be seen today at the Complutum archaeological site south west of the current city, about a kilometre from the medieval centre.
