Moyry Pass

Moyry Castle (from the Irish Maġ Rí or "plain of the king") is situated in County Armagh, Northern Ireland. It was built during the latter stages of the Nine Years' War in June 1601 by Lord Mountjoy to help secure Moyry Pass and the Gap of the North. It is set in the corner of a small bawn and is a small rectangular tower three storeys high. Moyry Castle is a State Care Historic Monument sited in the townland of Carrickbroad, in Newry, Mourne and Down District Council area, at grid ref: J0576 1466.Moyry Castle, is built on solid rock, It is almost square, 8 metres (26') each way and is three stories high. There are musketry loopholes on each wall except the North facing wall. This wall held the fireplaces which protrude on the outside.

The Jonesborough ambush took place on 20 March 1989 near the Irish border outside the village of Jonesborough, County Armagh, Northern Ireland. Two senior Royal Ulster Constabulary (RUC) officers, Chief Superintendent Harry Breen and Superintendent Bob Buchanan, were shot dead in an ambush by the Provisional IRA South Armagh Brigade. Breen and Buchanan were returning from an informal cross-border security conference in Dundalk with senior Garda officers when Buchanan's car, a red Vauxhall Cavalier, was flagged down and fired upon by six IRA gunmen, who the policemen had taken for British soldiers. Buchanan was killed outright whilst Breen, suffering gunshot wounds, was forced to lie on the ground and shot in the back of the head after he had left the car waving a white handkerchief. They were the highest-ranking RUC officers to be killed during the Troubles.Nobody has been charged with killing the two officers. There have been allegations that the attack was the result of collusion between the Gardaí and the Provisional IRA. As a result, Canadian judge Peter Cory investigated the killings in 2003; his findings were published in a report. This led to the Irish government setting up the Smithwick Tribunal, a judicial inquiry into the killings which opened in Dublin in June 2011 and published its final report in December 2013. In the Judge Peter Smithwick report he was unable to find direct evidence of collusion but said 'on balance of probability', somebody inside the Dundalk Garda station had passed on information to the IRA regarding the presence of Breen and Buchanan. He added that he was "satisfied there was collusion in the murders".

The Battle of Moyry Pass was fought during September and October 1600 in counties Armagh and Louth, in the north of Ireland, during the Nine Years' War. It was the first significant engagement of forces following the cessation of arms agreed in the previous year between the Irish leader Hugh O'Neill and the English Crown commander, the Earl of Essex. The battle was fought by the armies of O'Neill and Lord Mountjoy, a follower of the late Earl of Essex. Mountjoy was determined to pierce O'Neill's heartland in central and western Ulster by the Moyry Pass. In the course of a two-week assault the English troops established a garrison near Armagh, taking heavy casualties, and Mountjoy retired with difficulty to Dundalk.

Jonesborough or Jonesboro (Irish: Baile an Chláir) is a small village and civil parish in the Ring of Gullion in County Armagh, Northern Ireland. It is about 5 miles (8 km) south of Newry and lies 1,000 yards (1 km) from the border with County Louth in the Republic of Ireland. The Catholic parish includes the neighbouring area of Dromintee and crosses the Irish border into Louth.

On 17 February 1978, a British Army Gazelle helicopter, serial number XX404, went down near Jonesborough, County Armagh, Northern Ireland, after being fired at by a Provisional IRA unit from the South Armagh Brigade. The IRA unit was involved at the time in a gun battle with a Green Jackets observation post deployed in the area, and the helicopter was sent in to support the ground troops. The helicopter crashed after the pilot lost control of the aircraft whilst evading ground fire. Lieutenant-Colonel Ian Douglas Corden-Lloyd, 2nd Battalion Green Jackets commanding officer, died in the crash. The incident was overshadowed in the press by the La Mon restaurant bombing, which took place just hours later near Belfast.

Mountpleasant railway station (alternatively Mount Pleasant) was a railway station in County Louth, Ireland on the Belfast - Dublin Railway line. The station closed in 1965. The now demolished station was located in the Mountpleasant area of County Louth, north of Dundalk and close to Aghnaskeagh, Ravensdale, Currathir Bridge and Ballymakellelt. Although the station once comprised a Station House, Signal House, and platform, the disused structures were destroyed in the 1970s as a result of law-enforcement officials considering that they had been used to support Irish Republicans in the Northern Ireland Troubles.First known as Plaster railway station, the station was unusual in having only one platform and sat between Dundalk railway station, to the south, and Adavoyle railway station (which closed in 1933), to the north. At the time of closure, it was the nearest railway station to the Northern Ireland frontier, just 2.6 km (1½ miles) away.

Aghnaskeagh Cairns is a chambered cairn and portal tomb forming a national monument in County Louth, Ireland.

Faughart (also written Fochart) is an early Christian ruins and shrine site just north of Dundalk, County Louth, Ireland. As a popular site for modern pilgrimages, it was the birthplace of St Brigid in 451 AD, and one of her relics is held in a church in nearby Kilcurry. Edward Bruce, a younger brother of Robert the Bruce, is buried in the graveyard on the hill above the shrine (54°03′06″N 6°23′03″W). Bruce, who had taken the title King of Ireland, was defeated and killed at the Battle of Faughart in 1318. Landmarks include St Brigid's stone and pillar, her shrine and well, and modern religious sites devoted to the saint that attract thousands of pilgrims and tourists, providing a massive boost to the local economy. Ruins include an Iron Age fort, a Norman motte-and-bailey castle, and a medieval church. Situated 3 km north of Dundalk and 6 km south of Forkill, and standing at the southern end of the Gap of the North/Moyry Pass, Faughart held huge strategic importance for many centuries and was the scene of many battles; one such legendary battle was fought by Cú Chulainn in the Táin.

The Battle of Faughart (or Battle of Dundalk) was fought on 14 October 1318 between an Anglo-Irish force led by John de Bermingham (later created 1st Earl of Louth) and Edmund Butler, Earl of Carrick, and a Scottish and Irish army commanded by Prince Edward Bruce, Earl of Carrick, brother of King Robert I of Scots ('Robert the Bruce'). It was a battle of the First War of Scottish Independence and more precisely the Irish Bruce Wars. The defeat and death of Bruce at the battle ended the attempt to revive the High Kingship of Ireland. It also ended, for the time being, King Robert's attempt to open up a second front against the English in the Wars of Scottish Independence.

Adavoyle was a station in the rural townland of Adavoyle, near Dromintee, in County Armagh, Northern Ireland.

Ravensdale (Irish: Gleann na bhFiach) is a village, townland and electoral division located at the foothills of the Cooley Mountains on the Cooley Peninsula in the north of County Louth in Ireland. Bordering with the townland of Doolargy (Irish: An Dúleargaidh), Ravensdale is approximately 8 km to the north of Dundalk. The dual carriageway between Dublin and Belfast runs nearby, and the R174 connects it with Jenkinstown. A number of public buildings in Ravensdale village, including a now-disused courthouse, former school and Saint Mary's Roman Catholic Church, were originally built in the mid-19th century.Ravensdale is part of the ecclesiastical parish of Ballymacscanlon and Lordship; however, the northern part of Ravensdale is part of the parish area of Jonesborough and Dromintee.Ravensdale, which is situated beside Bellurgan, contains a number of wooded areas. The Ravensdale Forest nature trail is located in the wooded demesne of the former seat of the Barons Clermont, which straddles the border between County Armagh in Northern Ireland and County Louth in the Republic of Ireland. Ravensdale Park, also known as Ravensdale Castle, the 19th-century country house itself, was one of a number of such country houses destroyed during the Irish revolutionary period. Burned in 1921, the stonework of the house was later dismantled and reused during the construction of Church of St. Brigid, Glassdrummond in 1927. The Flurry River, which flows through the area before entering Dundalk Bay at Bellurgan, was in past times a trout and salmon fishery.
