Sorø Klosterkirke

Sorø Abbey was the preeminent and wealthiest monastic house in all of Denmark during the Middle Ages. It was located in the town of Sorø in central Zealand. After Denmark became Lutheran in 1536, the abbey was confiscated by the Crown. The abbey was turned into the Sorø Academy in 1623, an educational institution that has served as a knight academy, a venue for higher learning during the Danish Golden Age. It survives to date as a boarding school.

Sorø Academy (Danish, Sorø Akademi) is a boarding school and gymnasium located in the small town of Sorø, Denmark. It traces its history back to the 12th century when Bishop Absalon founded a monastery at the site, which was confiscated by the Crown after the Reformation, and ever since, on and off, it has served as an educational institution, in a variety of forms, including as a knight academy founded by Christian IV and a venue for higher learning during the Danish Golden Age. Danish writer and academian Ludvig Holberg bequested most of his fortune to re-establishing the academy in 1750 after a devastating fire.

Sorø Old Cemetery (Danish: Sorø Gamle Kirkegård), owned by Sorø Academy, is one of the oldest cemeteries still in use in Denmark.

The Abbey Gate (Danish: Klosterporten) in Sorø, Denmark, is the original gate of Absalon's Sorø Abbey dating from about 1200. It now affords access to the grounds of Sorø Academy, which include the old abbey church, Denmark's longest church building, and is claimed to be the oldest inhabited house in Denmark.

It displays a representative collection of Danish art as well as a collection of Russian art, covering both painting from 1870 to 1930 and Russian icons, and also hosts special exhibitions both of classical and contemporary art. The museum is housed within a listed Neoclassical house, part of a traditional Danish market town setting along Sorø's main street, which was expanded by the architects Lundgaard & Tranberg in 2011, tripling its size.

Vænget is a historic building in Sorø, Denmark. It is owned by neighbouring Sorø Academy and contains an exhibition of physical instruments from before 1800 in its ground floor.

Sorø Lake is the largest and most upstream of three lakes that almost surround the town of Sorø, Sorø Municipality, on the central part of Zealand, Denmark. Together with the two other lakes, Pedersborg Lake and Tuel Lake, it is collectively known as the Sorø Lakes. They drain into the Suså River. Sorø Lake is owned by Sorø Academy, a centuries-old educational institution that stands on its northeastern shores. A tour boat operates on the lake in the summer time. It is also a popular venue for a wide range of recreational activities, including, sailing, rowing, kayaking, fishing and swimming.

West Zealand County (Danish: Vestsjællands Amt) is a former county (Danish: amt) in the west-central part of the island of Zealand (Sjælland) in eastern Denmark. The county was formed on 1 April 1970, comprising a few former counties. The county was abolished effective January 1, 2007, when it merged into Region Sjælland (i.e. Region Zealand).The county was responsible for public hospitals, upper secondary schools and schools for Higher Preparatory Examination, public transport and social welfare for the disabled.The County Hall was located in the town of Sorø, and became the seat of the new region. Sorø is by no means the biggest city in West Zealand, but it has great historical value. It is famed for the Sorø Academy (Danish, Sorø Akademi), an educational institution built in 1140 together with the church where Queen Margaret I of Denmark was buried (later moved to Roskilde Domkirke, Roskilde). Many people who live in West Zealand commute to the greater metropolitan area of Copenhagen for work.

Sorø (Danish pronunciation: [ˈsoːˌʁœˀ]) is a town in Sorø municipality in Region Sjælland on the island of Zealand (Sjælland) in east Denmark. The population is 7,999 (2022). The municipal council and the regional council are located in Sorø. Sorø was founded in 1161 by Bishop Absalon, later the founder of Copenhagen, and is the site of Sorø Academy (Danish Sorø Akademis Skole). The Academy is an educational institution built in 1140. Also built that year was Sorø Klosterkirke, the church where Bishop Absalon and Margaret I of Denmark were buried (she was later moved to Roskilde Domkirke, Roskilde). Many people live in Sorø, but work either in the greater Copenhagen metropolitan area or in the town of Roskilde.
