Wallops Flight Facility

Naval Auxiliary Air Station Chincoteague was a U.S. Navy Auxiliary Air Station near Chincoteague Island, Virginia. In 1941, the United States entered World War II; early the following year, the Germans torpedoed two merchant ships off the Assateague coast. To guard the coast, the United States Army established two small posts on Virginia's Eastern Shore, one each at Accomac and Chincoteague. The Navy established the Chincoteague Naval Auxiliary Air Station in 1943, across from Chincoteague on the mainland. One young pilot being trained there, future president George Herbert Walker Bush, got in trouble for "buzzing" the house of a young woman he had met at a dance. In 1959, NASA acquired the former Naval Auxiliary Air Station Chincoteague, and engineering and administrative activities were moved to this location. In 1974, the Wallops Station was named Wallops Flight Center. The name was changed to Wallops Flight Facility in 1981, when it became part of Goddard Space Flight Center.

The Wallops Flight Facility Visitor Center is a public museum and NASA visitor center located at NASA's Wallops Flight Facility on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. The center is located in Building J-17, along Route 175 between Chincoteague and Wattsville. It contains exhibits highlighting past missions conducted at the Wallops Flight Facility. The visitor center also provides information about current activities at Wallops Flight Facility, such as the sounding rocket, balloon and aircraft program, and educational programs on Earth and space science. The outside grounds include a rocket garden consisting of rockets and aircraft used for space and aeronautical research, including a full-scale four-stage reentry vehicle used to study the Earth's atmosphere. The center also provides a public viewing area for rocket launches, situated seven miles from the launchpads on Wallops Island and the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport. In 2024, the center hosted 41,578 visitors as well as 3,598 spectators for rocket launches.

Chincoteague Bay Field Station is a residential, environmental learning center and field station located on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. The Field Station offers programs for all ages, including among others school programs, summer camps, college courses, research opportunities, Road Scholar programs, family camps, community events, homeschool programs, and Boy Scout and Girl Scout badging. Formerly the Marine Science Consortium, the Field Station has campuses on Wallops Island, VA, and Greenbackville, VA.

Horntown is a census-designated place (CDP) in Accomack County, Virginia, United States. Per the 2020 census, the population was 912. In the mid-19th century, Horntown was a stagecoach stop on the route between Wilmington, Delaware and Eastville.

The John B. Whealton Memorial Causeway, more commonly known to the locals as the Chincoteague Causeway, connects the mainland of the Eastern Shore to Chincoteague, where it continues into town as Maddox Boulevard. The causeway is part of State Route 175 (Chincoteague Road). The causeway contains five bridges and crosses the following (west to east): Mosquito Creek via the Mosquito Creek Fixed Bridge Cockle Creek via the Cockle Creek Fixed Bridge Queen Sound via the Queen Sound Fixed Bridge Wire Narrows via the Wire Narrows Fixed Bridge Black Narrows and Lewis Creek Channel via the Chincoteague Channel Drawbridge and Marsh Island ConnectorThe original causeway contained six bridges. The route crossed the Black Narrows and Chincoteague Channel via separate bridges which took the causeway across Marsh Island, landing in town between Mumford and Cleveland Streets. The former a fixed bridge, the latter a swing bridge, they were both removed in late 2010 after the construction of the new bridge. The Marsh Island Connector is a short spur bridge connecting the Marsh Island community to the new bridge. The spur joins the main bridge at a T-intersection over the water, and is a rare example of a three-way bridge.

Chincoteague Channel is a channel on the Eastern Shore of Virginia between marshlands to the northwest and Chincoteague Island to the southeast. The Chincoteague Channel connects to Chincoteague Bay to the northeast and Chincoteague Inlet to the southwest.

Chincoteague Inlet is found lying between Assateague Island and Wallops Island on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. It is 30 miles south-southwestward from the Ocean City, MD Inlet. The approach has no sea buoy, however lighted buoy (R "2"), marking Chincoteague Shoals, is located ESE of the entrance at 37°47’25" N / 075°22’21" W, and can be used. Prominent on the approach are Assateague Light shown from a 142-foot red and white horizontally banded conical tower and a lookout tower on the southern tip of Assateague Island; both are visible well offshore. The marked channel through the inlet to Chincoteague Channel is subject to frequent change; the buoys are shifted with changing conditions. Breakers are evident on either side of the channel. A sunken wreck is about 0.4 mile southwest of Fishing Point in 37°51’54" N., 75°24’04" W.
