Newport on the Levee

The Newport Aquarium is an aquarium located in Newport, Kentucky, United States at Newport on the Levee, across the river from Cincinnati. It has 70 exhibits and 14 galleries, including five seamless acrylic tunnels totaling over 200 feet (61 m) in length. The aquarium also showcases thousands of animals from around the world in 1,000,000 US gal (3,800,000 L) of water, including Scooter and Sweet Pea, two of the few shark rays in captivity. It is the first aquarium to have success in breeding shark rays. It also hosts a collection of alligators, including albino alligators and Mighty Mike (left in 2018). Newport Aquarium is an accredited member of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, a leader in global wildlife conservation. The aquarium has many outreach programs, including the mobile shark cart and the WAVE Foundation, that seeks to educate the public about our oceans and promote STEM. Throughout the year, they have seasonal events to engage the public and promote ocean conservation. The Newport Aquarium is part of Herschend Family Entertainment, a for-profit company.

St. Paul's Episcopal Church, built in 1871, is an historic Episcopal church located at 7 Court Place at York Street in Newport, Kentucky, in the United States. On November 25, 1980 it was added to the National Register of Historic Places.

The Third Street Motor Car Company Building, at 216 E. Third St. in Newport, Kentucky, was built in 1916. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002.It was deemed notable as "one of northern Kentucky's finest examples of this increasingly rare building type. It is characteristic in form and detailing, retaining many original features. Its tapestry brickwork and geometrical detailing, influenced by the Craftsman style, set it apart from other area examples. It has been evaluated within the context of "Automobile Showrooms of Northern Kentucky, c. 1910-1945."

The Newport, Kentucky, World Peace Bell is one of more than twenty Peace Bells around the world. It weighs 30,000 kg (66,000 lb) and is 3.7 m (12 feet) wide. From 2000 until 2006, it was the largest swinging bell in the world. It was dedicated on December 31, 1999, and was first swung as the year 2000 opened. In keeping with its theme of world peace, the bell features an inscription commemorating the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and engravings marking important events from the past 1,000 years.

Southgate Street School is a former black school in Newport, Kentucky. The building today serves as a local history museum. After the American Civil War the Freeman's Bureau was tasked with educating the newly freed black children. The Freeman's Bureau reported in 1868 there were 15 pupils enrolled in the school. After 1869 the Bureau could no longer perform due to budget cuts. Then in 1870 the City of Newport, Kentucky took over the running of Campbell County's only black school. By 1873, they established a school on Southgate Street. Elizabeth Hudson was hired as the first teacher at $35.00 per month. In 1893, the current two-level building was constructed on Southgate Street. The school remained in operation until 1955, when the Brown v. Board of Education decision closed the segregated schools.After the school's closure, the building was bought by local gangster Frank "Screw" Andrews. The building was used as a warehouse. The school building is presently owned by a Black Masonic Lodge (Prince Hall Masonic Lodge 120). In 1985, The Southgate Street School was listed as a contributing property to the Mansion Hill Historic District. As of 2017 the first floor is used by the City of Newport and the Newport Foundation as the Newport History Museum. Museum displays remind visitors of school life in the early twentieth century. Other exhibits document Newport's history including displays about its gambling history. This project was initiated by Scott Clark, Newport's Historic Preservation officer and students from Northern Kentucky University's Master of Public History Program.

Bellevue in Newport, Kentucky, at 335 E. 3rd St., was the homestead of General James Taylor, Jr. It is located on a small rise overlooking the Ohio River, towards Cincinnati.It is a "free classic" Queen Anne-style house built in 1845. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.It has also been known as the General James Taylor House and as the Vonderhaar & Stetter Funeral Home.

The Cincinnati–Newport Bridge, also known as the Central Bridge, was a cantilever bridge which crossed the Ohio River between Newport, Kentucky and Cincinnati, Ohio. It was completed in 1890 and demolished in 1992 to make way for the Taylor-Southgate Bridge, which opened in 1995. Some pieces of the ornate ironwork were transferred from the Cincinnati–Newport Bridge to the Taylor-Southgate Bridge.

The Taylor–Southgate Bridge is a continuous truss bridge that was built in 1995. It has a main span of 850 feet (260 m), and a total span of 1,850 feet (560 m). The bridge carries U.S. Route 27 across the Ohio River, connecting Newport, Kentucky and Cincinnati, Ohio. Some regard this bridge, which was a replacement for the Cincinnati-Newport Bridge built by Samuel Bigstaff, as a little too plain in its design for a major urban bridge, especially considering many cities today are opting for a more elegant design, such as a cable stayed bridge.The bridge is named for the families of James Taylor, Jr. and Richard Southgate, two important early settlers of Newport. Richard was the father of William Wright Southgate, a pre Civil War Congressman from northern Kentucky. The bridge replaced the Cincinnati-Newport Bridge, a truss bridge built in 1890. Commonly known as Central Bridge, it was demolished in 1992.

Newport Barracks was a military barracks on the Ohio River, across from Cincinnati, Ohio in Newport, Kentucky. It was operational from 1803 until 1894.

The Monmouth Street Historic District is located in Newport, Kentucky. The district was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1996. The district includes Monmouth Street, the main commercial street of the city, between Third Street (near Newport on the Levee), then south to Eleventh Street. It contains 80 acres (320,000 m2) and 94 buildings. Most of the buildings were built between 1850 and 1949. The district included 94 contributing buildings among its 143 properties, including the 1902 Carnegie library, Campbell County's first public library and a work of the Cincinnati architects Werner and Atkins.

Sawyer Point Park & Yeatman's Cove are a pair of side-by-side parks on the riverfront of downtown Cincinnati, Ohio, United States. The two linear parks stretch one mile along the north shore of the Ohio River. Since 2012, the parks have been the location for the annual Bunbury Music Festival.

The Miami and Erie Canal was a 274-mile (441 km) canal that ran from Cincinnati to Toledo, Ohio, creating a water route between the Ohio River and Lake Erie. Construction on the canal began in 1825 and was completed in 1845 at a cost to the state government of $8,062,680.07. At its peak, it included 19 aqueducts, three guard locks, 103 canal locks, multiple feeder canals, and a few man-made water reservoirs. The canal climbed 395 feet (120 m) above Lake Erie and 513 feet (156 m) above the Ohio River to reach a topographical peak called the Loramie Summit, which extended 19 miles (31 km) between New Bremen, Ohio to lock 1-S in Lockington, north of Piqua, Ohio. Boats up to 80 feet long were towed along the canal by mules, horses, or oxen walking on a prepared towpath along the bank, at a rate of four to five miles per hour. Due to competition from railroads, which began to be built in the area in the 1850s, the commercial use of the canal gradually declined during the late 19th century. It was permanently abandoned for commercial use in 1913 after a historic flood in Ohio severely damaged it. Only a small fraction of the canal survives today, along with its towpath and locks.
