The 1942 PGA Championship was the 25th PGA Championship, held May 25–31 at Seaview Country Club in Galloway Township, New Jersey, just north of Atlantic City. Then a match play championship, Sam Snead won 2 & 1 in the final over Jim Turnesa.It was the first of Snead's seven major titles, and he began his service in the U.S. Navy immediately after the event. Turnesa, from a large family of professional golfers, won the PGA Championship in 1952. He was serving in the U.S. Army and had defeated the other pre-tournament favorites, Ben Hogan and Byron Nelson, in the quarterfinals and semifinals. Due to World War II, this was the second and final major of the year, following the Masters. None of the majors were played in 1943; the PGA Championship returned in 1944 and the other three in 1946. The field for this PGA Championship was reduced from prior years, with 32 advancing to match play, and all five rounds at 36 holes per match. This format was continued for 1944 and 1945, then returned to the pre-war match play field of 64 in 1946. In the three previous years, Nelson had advanced to the finals, but was defeated in the 1942 semifinals by Turnesa in 37 holes. Nelson returned to the finals at the next two editions for five finals in six PGA Championships; he won two, in 1940 and 1945. Prior to his match with Nelson, Turnesa defeated Hogan 2 and 1 in the quarterfinals; after the war, Hogan won the title in 1946 and 1948. Defending champion Vic Ghezzi, a New Jersey native, lost 4 & 3 in the first round to Jimmy Demaret, who fell 3 & 2 to Snead in the semifinals. Harry Cooper was the medalist in the stroke play qualifier at 138 (−6), but lost to Nelson in the quarterfinals on the third extra hole. The golf course, now known as the Bay Course of the Stockton Seaview Hotel and Golf Club, was designed in 1914 by Donald Ross. It hosts an annual event on the LPGA Tour, the ShopRite LPGA Classic.

The Seaview is a golf club and resort on the East Coast of the United States, located in Galloway Township, New Jersey, north of nearby Atlantic City. The club hosted the ShopRite LPGA Classic in 1986-87, from 1998-2006 and again starting in 2010. During World War II, it hosted the PGA Championship in 1942, Sam Snead's first major title. The course also cooperates with Rutgers University on testing of new turf breeds and natural control of mosquitoes. The resort has two golf courses, Bay and Pines, and a 300-room hotel with tennis courts, swimming pools, two mini basketball courts, jogging trails, a fitness center, and a spa.On September 1, 2010, The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey took ownership of the hotel and the Bay course. On August 1, 2018, it was announced that The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey sold the club to Florida-based KDG Capital LLC for $21 million.

Absecon Highlands is a census-designated place (CDP) in Atlantic County, New Jersey, United States. It is in the eastern part of the county, in southern Galloway Township. It is bordered to the south by the city of Absecon and to the east by Reeds Bay, a tidal water body the connects to the Atlantic Ocean through Broad Creek and Absecon Inlet. The CDP includes the neighborhoods of Absecon Highlands, Seaview Estates, Seaview Park, Conovertown, and Holly Brook.U.S. Route 9 (New York Road) is the main road through the community; it leads north 7 miles (11 km) to the Garden State Parkway in Port Republic and south through Absecon 4 miles (6 km) to the Atlantic City Expressway in Pleasantville. The community was first listed as a CDP prior to the 2020 census.

The Absecon Public School District is a comprehensive community public school district that serves students in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade from Absecon, in Atlantic County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2017-18 school year, the district and its two schools had an enrollment of 887 students and 66.0 classroom teachers (on an FTE basis), for a student–teacher ratio of 13.4:1.The district is classified by the New Jersey Department of Education as being in District Factor Group "CD", the sixth-highest of eight groupings. District Factor Groups organize districts statewide to allow comparison by common socioeconomic characteristics of the local districts. From lowest socioeconomic status to highest, the categories are A, B, CD, DE, FG, GH, I and J.For ninth through twelfth grades, public school students from Absecon attend the Pleasantville High School in Pleasantville as part of a sending/receiving relationship with the Pleasantville Public Schools. As of the 2017-18 school year, the high school had an enrollment of 757 students and 77.0 classroom teachers (on an FTE basis), for a student–teacher ratio of 9.8:1. Students are also eligible to attend the Atlantic County Institute of Technology and Charter-Tech High School for the Performing Arts. A 2019 study looked at the possibility of dissolving the sending relationship with Pleasantville. The consultants considered a shift to either Mainland Regional High School or the Greater Egg Harbor Regional High School District (at either Absegami High School or Cedar Creek High School). The study concluded that Absegami High School was the preferred alternative and that the district would achieve significant savings from lower costs per student. In 2020, Absecon district submitted a petition to end its agreement with Pleasantville and send its students to Absegami High School under a new sending/receiving relationship with the Greater Egg Harbor Regional High School District that Absecon argues would give its students a better education at a lower cost, without negatively impacting the demographics in Pleasantville High School. About 10% of Absecon's graduating students have been choosing to attend Pleasantville High School, for which the Absecon district has been paying $18,000 per student each year.

Oceanville is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) located within Galloway Township in Atlantic County, in the U.S. state of New Jersey. At the 2020 United States census, the CDP's population was 793.Oceanville is located on U.S. Route 9 approximately 3.5 miles (5.6 km) north-northeast of Absecon. The community has a post office with ZIP Code 08231.From 1983–2016, Oceanville was the site of the Noyes Museum, the only fine arts museum in Atlantic County. The museum became part of Stockton University in 2016 and the site in Oceanville will be sold by the foundation that owns the property.

Absecon (, ab-SEE-con) is a city in Atlantic County, New Jersey. As of the 2010 United States Census, the city's population was 8,411, reflecting an increase of 773 (+10.1%) from the 7,638 counted in the 2000 Census, which had in turn increased by 340 (+4.7%) from the 7,298 counted in the 1990 Census.The current City of Absecon was originally incorporated as a town by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on February 29, 1872, from portions of Egg Harbor Township and Galloway Township. Then on March 24, 1902, the City of Absecon replaced the town. The city is named for the Absegami tribe of Native Americans, from the word "Absogami", which means "little stream".

The Dr. Jonathan Pitney House is a historic residence located at 57 North Shore Road in Absecon City in Atlantic County, New Jersey. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on August 14, 1998, for its significance in transportation and politics/government.

Absecon is a NJ Transit station in Absecon, New Jersey on the Atlantic City Line. It is located at South Station and Ohio Avenues. In 1938, the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities ordered the elimination of grade crossings in Absecon. The project was more than a mile long and covered five crossings. By this time, the Pennsylvania-Reading Seashore Lines (who owned it at the time) was five years old. the railroad was already working on acquiring land in August of that year. Due to the need to span Absecon Creek and Shore Road, an 'unusual' concrete and steel trestle was planned. It appears that the project was funded, at least in part, by the Public Works Administration. In March 1940, the project reportedly cost $1.5 million and included a 'fireproof' station level with the elevated tracks. Even with the 1989 upgrade of the line owned by NJ Transit, most of the Absecon station still survives 72 years later. Most commuters drive to Absecon station (or are dropped off by others in cars). In 2019, the Absecon town council applied for transit village status from the New Jersey state government. The program provides state funding for a variety of infrastructure improvements if high-density buildings are added near mass transit locations. In Absecon's case, the proposal would be to build more housing in its downtown within walking distance of the Absecon train station.

Galloway Township is a township in Atlantic County, in the U.S. state of New Jersey, and a growing edge city to neighboring Atlantic City. At 114.49 square miles (296.5 km2) of total area of land and water, Galloway Township is the largest municipality in the state. As of the 2020 United States census, the township's population was 37,813, its highest decennial count ever and an increase of 464 (+1.2%) from the 2010 census count of 37,349, which in turn reflected an increase of 6,140 (+19.7%) from the 31,209 counted in the 2000 census.Galloway Township was incorporated by Royal charter on April 4, 1774, from portions of Egg Harbor Township, when it was still part of Gloucester County. After becoming part of the newly formed Atlantic County in 1837, portions of the township were taken to create Mullica Township (March 13, 1838), Egg Harbor City (June 14, 1858), Absecon (February 29, 1872), Brigantine Beach borough (now Brigantine; June 14, 1890) and Port Republic (March 1, 1905).Geographically, the township, and all of Atlantic County, is part of the South Jersey region of the state and of the Atlantic City-Hammonton metropolitan statistical area, which in turn is included in the Philadelphia-Reading-Camden combined statistical area and the Delaware Valley.

Smithville is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) located within Galloway Township, in Atlantic County, in the U.S. state of New Jersey, that was established as part of the 2010 United States Census. Smithville is located 15 miles (24 km) north of and inland from Atlantic City. As of the 2010 Census, the CDP's population was 7,242.Although Smithville has existed as a community since the American Revolutionary War, most of the community remained very rural until the 1960s when the Smithville Towne Center, a tourist attraction containing over 80 shops, opened. The Towne Center was expanded to include numerous rides and other shops named "The Village Greene", which was the centerpiece of a large planned community developed since the 1980s.

Holy Spirit High School is a Roman Catholic preparatory school located in Absecon in Atlantic County, New Jersey, United States, just outside Atlantic City. The school is under the jurisdiction of the Diocese of Camden. The school's motto is Caritas Omnia Vincit – which translates to 'love conquers all things'. The school has been accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Elementary and Secondary Schools since 1971; The school's accreditation status was extended for seven years in Fall 2018.As of the 2017–18 school year, the school had an enrollment of 391 students and 32.3 classroom teachers (on an FTE basis), for a student–teacher ratio of 12.1:1. The school's student body was 78.0% (305) White, 6.4% (25) Asian, 5.6% (22) Black, 4.1% (16) Hispanic and 5.9% (23) two or more races.The school is under the limited governance of an independent Board of Trustees. The Bishop of Camden is responsible for the proper teaching of the Catholic faith, the proper celebration of the sacraments and the overall Catholic identity of the institution. The President/Principal serves as the Chairman of the Board of Trustees and the chief administrative officer of Holy Spirit High School.
