Swinden Hall

Swinden is a village in the civil parish of Hellifield, in North Yorkshire, England. It is near Halton West and Nappa and about 7 miles north of Barnoldswick. The population was estimated at 20 in 2010.Swinden was historically a township in the ancient parish of Gisburn in the West Riding of Yorkshire. It became a separate civil parish in 1866. It was transferred to the new county of North Yorkshire in 1974. The civil parish was abolished on 1 April 2014 and amalgamated with the parish of Hellifield. From 1974 to 2023 it was in Craven district.

Hellifield Peel is a historic building in Hellifield, a village in North Yorkshire, in England. The peel tower was constructed in the 14th century as a solar associated with a nearby aisled hall. In the following century was converted into a tower house. Licence to crenellate was granted in 1440. In the 17th century a west wing was added and the windows were altered, while in the late 18th century the angle between the west wing and the tower was filled in, and sash windows were installed. A servants' wing was added further to the west around this time, while a wing was added to the east in the early 20th century. During World War II, it was requisitioned in connection with a prisoner of war camp. After the war, the house was bought by the furniture maker Harry Lund, who stripped it of wood, and then sold the remaining fixtures. This left the building roofless, leading it to fall into ruin. It was grade II listed in 1958. In 2004, the ruin was bought by Francis and Karen Shaw for £165,000. They restored the building, other than the servants' wing and east wing, the work featuring on the television programme Grand Designs. In order to repay the cost of the work, they operated the house as a bed and breakfast. The building is constructed of stone with a later embattled parapet, and has three storeys and three bays. The house contains windows with moulded surrounds, and in the left return are two staircase windows with chamfered surrounds, one with an ogee head. At the rear are two garderobe chutes.

Halton West is a village and civil parish in the county of North Yorkshire, England. North Yorkshire County Council estimated the population in 2015 at 70. It is situated on the River Ribble and is 7 miles (11 km) north of Barnoldswick, 7 miles (11 km) south of Settle and 12 miles (19 km) west of Skipton. The place was first recorded in about 1200 as Halton. The name is derived from the Old English halh 'nook' and tūn 'farm or village', so means 'farm or village in or by a nook'. "West" was added to distinguish the village from another Halton, now Halton East, 12 miles (19 km) to the east. Halton West, historically also known as West Halton, was a township in the ancient parish of Long Preston in the West Riding of Yorkshire. It became a civil parish in 1866, and in 1974 was transferred to the new county of North Yorkshire. From 1974 to 2023 it was part of the district of Craven, it is now administered by the unitary North Yorkshire Council.

Newsholme is a small village and civil parish in the Ribble Valley, Lancashire, England, but lies within the historic West Riding of Yorkshire. According to the 2001 census, the parish had a population of 50, however the United Kingdom Census 2011 grouped the parish with Horton and Paythorne (2001 pop. 76 and 95), giving a total of 253. Today it lies near the boundary with North Yorkshire on the A682, 4 miles (6 km) north of Barnoldswick and 12 miles (19 km) west of Skipton. The parish adjoins the Ribble Valley parishes of Paythorne and Horton, and the parish of Hellifield in the county of North Yorkshire. In the west of the parish, on high ground overlooking the River Ribble, are the remains of a late Anglo-Saxon or early Norman Ringwork castle, called Castle Haugh but also known locally as Cromwell's Basin. On the eastern side of the village, next to Demesne Farm is the site of a Medieval Manorial Hall called the Old Hall. Between 1872 and 1957 the village had a railway station on the Ribble Valley Line. Newsholme railway station was a railway station that served the small village of Newsholme in Lancashire. It was built by the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway. It was closed in 1957.

The A59 is a major road in England which is around 109 miles (175 km) long and runs from Wallasey, Merseyside to York, North Yorkshire. The alignment formed part of the Trunk Roads Act 1936, being then designated as the A59. It is a key route connecting Merseyside at the M53 motorway to Yorkshire, passing through three counties and connecting to various major motorways. The road is a combination of historical routes combined with contemporary roads and a mixture of dual and single carriageway. Some sections of the A59 in Yorkshire closely follow the routes of Roman roads, some dating back to the Middle Ages as salt roads, whilst much of the A59 in Merseyside follows Victorian routes which are largely unchanged to the present day. Numerous bypasses have been constructed throughout the 20th century, one of the earliest being the Maghull bypass in the early 1930s, particularly where traffic through towns was congested. Portions of the route through Lancashire were proposed to be upgraded to motorway standard during the mid-20th century, latterly being downgraded to significant improvements then ultimately withdrawn from consideration. Sections of the road have previously been noted as being amongst the most dangerous in the country, particularly in Yorkshire, despite continued efforts to improve road safety.

Otterburn (historically known as Otterburn-in-Craven) is a village and civil parish in the Craven district of North Yorkshire, England. It is at OS Grid Reference SD8857, near Airton, Calton and the A65. The village is 9 miles (14 km) north west of Skipton and 1.9 miles (3 km) east of Hellifield.At the 2011 census the population was less than 100, so the details are included in the civil parish of Airton.

Gledstone Hall is a 20th-century country house in West Marton, near Skipton, North Yorkshire, England. Designed by Edwin Lutyens it stands in a 12-hectare (30-acre) estate. It is a Grade II* listed building. The gardens are separately listed Grade II.
