The Madeira School (simply referred to as Madeira School or Madeira) is an elite, private, day and boarding college-preparatory school for girls in McLean, Virginia, United States. It was established in 1906 by Lucy Madeira Wing.

Difficult Run is a 15.9-mile-long (25.6 km) tributary stream of the Potomac River in Northern Virginia in the United States. The area has had many historical uses dating back to the early 1800s. Today, the area is used recreationally by visitors interested in the watershed's variety of options including hiking, biking, fishing, boating, climbing, and bird watching. The wildlife at Difficult Run is vast as 163 different species can be seen depending on the season. There are 41 different soil types found on the trail and alongside the stream. The stream is part of the greater 57.7- square-mile Drainage basin, or watershed, located in the north-central portion of Fairfax County and drains directly to the Potomac River. Difficult Run flows through Fairfax County to Great Falls Park, on the Virginia side of the Potomac River. The portion of the run through the park has been characterized as "a miniature Mather Gorge and Great Falls." The stream picks up speed as it narrows into a steep gorge with waterfalls and quickly reaches the same level as the Potomac. At the mouth of Difficult Run, one can see a panoramic view of the Potomac River.

Carderock Recreation Area is a 100-acre park in Carderock, Maryland, part of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park. The area is well known as a destination for its outdoor activities of rock climbing, hiking and biking. It is bounded by the Potomac River on the south and the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal on the north, and it is accessed from Clara Barton Parkway from the same exit as Carderock Division of the Naval Surface Warfare Center. The Recreation Area includes a picnic shelter, section C of the Billy Goat Trail, convenient access to the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal, and popular rock cliffs. The area has a long history of climbing and is notable for being the closest significant climbing area to Washington, D.C. As such, it is one of the most climbed cliffs in the eastern United States. There is no fee to enter the park.

State Route 193 (SR 193) is a primary state highway in the U.S. state of Virginia. Known as Georgetown Pike, the state highway runs 11.79 mi (18.97 km) from SR 7 in Dranesville east to SR 123 in Langley. SR 193 passes through Great Falls and meets Interstate 495 (I-495) in McLean. The state highway was designated the first Virginia Byway for its scenic value in 1974.

Scott's Run Nature Preserve is a nature preserve in Fairfax County, Virginia, United States. Located in McLean, it is bordered by Virginia State Route 193 to its south, Interstate 495 to its east and the Potomac River to its north. It encompasses 336 acres (136 ha) of woodland with its namesake, Scott's Run, flowing through its west side. Scott's Run originates in nearby Tysons Corner and enters the Potomac on the northwest side of the preserve. The preserve is noted for including eastern hemlocks among its plant life, which are rare for the area. It is a popular destination for recreation and hiking and is operated by the Fairfax County Park Authority.

Odricks Corner is an unincorporated community in Fairfax County, Virginia, United States. Odricks Corner lies north of the Dulles Toll Road (State Route 267) at the intersection of Spring Hill and Lewinsville Roads. Odricks Corner takes its name from Alfred Odrick, a former slave and carpenter who in 1872 purchased 30 acres and built a house on the southern side of Lewinsville Road. This was later intersected by Spring Hill Road, and the resulting location came to be known as Odrick's Corner. By 1879 a one-room schoolhouse, called Odrick's School, had been erected at the corner; tradition links Alfred Odrick to its creation. The school came to be used as well as a location for community meetings, and was the first place where services for Shiloh Baptist Church were held. The original frame building, which came to be the center of a thriving African-American community, was eventually replaced with a brick structure. This was later closed, and was sold in 1953; it has since been demolished.The history of the community has been noted by a historic marker near the Spring Hill Recreation Center, erected by the Fairfax County History Commission in 2002.

Bear Island is an island located in Potomac, Montgomery County, Maryland between the Potomac River and the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal near the Great Falls. It is managed by the National Park Service as part of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park and is co-owned by The Nature Conservancy. One of its most popular attractions is the Billy Goat Trail. Pets are not allowed on Bear Island, nor is smoking.

Carderock is a neighborhood located in Montgomery County, Maryland, United States, along the Potomac River. It is located in the southern part of the Potomac census-designated place and western part of the Bethesda postal area. Carderock is well known for Carderock Division of the Naval Surface Warfare Center and rock climbing at Carderock Recreation Area, part of Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park. Carderock also includes a local school (Carderock Springs Elementary), Carderock Springs Swim and Tennis Club, and Congressional Country Club.Despite its proximity to the Capital Beltway, Carderock remains only moderately developed and traffic congested. This is due in part to the prominent presence of Rock Run, the Naval Surface Warfare Center, and Congressional Country Club. In addition, almost no roads running through Carderock have direct access to the Beltway. The only exceptions are River Road on the north end of the neighborhood and Clara Barton Parkway on the south end.

Thompson's Corner, is a small unincorporated community located in northern Montgomery County, Maryland, United States. It is located west of Clarksburg and east of Comus. The community was once marked by a house and general store on Slidell Road owned by Richard Thompson (1796-1874), a local farmer. Circa 1860, his son Jerome (1833-1905) officially founded Thompson's Corner.Through his son, Samuel, Richard Thompson is the third great-grandfather of country singer, Martina McBride.

The National Counterproliferation and Biosecurity Center (NCBC) is the primary organization within the United States Intelligence Community for combating the spread of weapons of mass destruction and their delivery systems.NCBC works with the Intelligence Community (IC) to identify critical intelligence gaps in counter-proliferation collection or analysis and then develops solutions to help close those gaps.
