Woodville is a town in Jackson County, Alabama, United States. It was officially established by an act of the Alabama State Legislature on December 13, 1819, one day before Alabama became a state. It was later incorporated on May 12, 1890, but lost its charter in 1897. It reincorporated in 1912. As of the 2010 census, the population of the town is 746, down from 761 in 2000.

It serves as one of the schools within the Jackson County School District. It is one of 18 public schools and six K-12 schools in the district. In 2022, it received an accountability score of 75 from the Alabama Department of Education.

The Skirmish at Paint Rock Bridge was an action fought between a Union Army detachment of 27 men guarding a bridge near Woodville, Alabama and a Confederate States Army cavalry detachment intent on destroying the railroad bridge on April 28, 1862, during the American Civil War. Union Army brigade commander Colonel Joshua W. Sill reported that the men from the 10th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Regiment, commanded by Colonel Arnold R. Chapin, who were under the immediate command of Sergeant William Nelson and Sergeant Augustus H. Makimson held off the Confederate force of 250 men for over two hours and killed 7 Confederates and captured 1 wounded Confederate soldier who told the Union men of the Confederate numbers and casualties. The action resulted in the Union maintaining control of an intact railroad line through the area.

Fern Cave National Wildlife Refuge is a 199-acre (0.8 km2) National Wildlife Refuge located in northeastern Alabama, near Paint Rock, Alabama in Jackson County. Despite receiving more than 1,200 visitors per year, the facility is unstaffed; it is administered by the Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge in Decatur, Alabama.

Paint Rock is a town in Jackson County, Alabama, United States, along the Paint Rock River, and is included in the Huntsville-Decatur Combined Statistical Area. It was incorporated in July 1894.As of the 2010 census, the population of the town was 210, up from 185 in 2000. This was the first time in 100 years it increased in population. Out of 13 incorporated communities in Jackson County, it is the least populated. Its peak population was in 1910 when it had 534 people and was the 4th largest town in the county. Paint Rock is the location where the Scottsboro Boys were arrested.

Keel Mountain is a mesa in Madison and Jackson Counties in Alabama. It is associated with the Cumberland Plateau, which it is separated from by the valley of the Paint Rock River. It is named for early pioneers Jesse and Priscilla (Whitaker) Keel, who settled there from North Carolina prior to 1810.

Trenton is an unincorporated community in Jackson County, Alabama, United States. It is located on Alabama State Route 65, 7.7 miles (12.4 km) east-northeast of Gurley in the Paint Rock Valley. Trenton had a post office until it closed on November 5, 2011; it still has its own ZIP code, 35774.

Grant is a town in Marshall County, Alabama, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population of Grant was 1,039, up from 896 at the 2010 census. It is included in the Huntsville-Decatur Combined Statistical Area. The town was incorporated on November 15, 1945, with Delbert Hodges serving as the first mayor.

The Gurley Historic District is a historic district in Gurley, Alabama. The town was originally the plantation of John Gurley, who came to Madison County from North Carolina in the 1830s. In 1857, the Memphis and Charleston Railroad built its line through the property, and Gurley constructed a water tank to service the line's locomotives. A post office was established in 1866, at which time only a few families lived in the area. The town incorporated in 1890, and the population immediately began to grow. Industry was attracted to the area by its abundance of lumber; many sawmills, producers of wooden barrels, and the Eagle Pencil Company set up shop near the town. Retail establishments were centered on Joplin Street, however a fire in 1923 destroyed most of the structures. Depletion of the area's timber and the greater influence of neighboring Huntsville drew industry away in the 1920s and 1930s, though despite declining population a new Madison County High School was built in 1936. The oldest extant building in the district is the Captain Elijah F. Walker House, built in 1874 by the Civil War veteran who would later serve in the Alabama House of Representatives. The majority of the remaining structures were built between 1891 and 1910; notable among them is the H. A. Smith House, an elaborate Queen Anne house built by a carpenter who would later serve as postmaster. Several other houses exhibit Queen Anne, American Craftsman, and Bungalow details, though most are less decorated folk architectural forms. Two churches in the district, the United Methodist church built in 1891 and the Presbyterian church built in 1912, are Gothic Revival in style.The district was listed on the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage in 1995 and the National Register of Historic Places in 2004.

Bucksnort is an unincorporated community in Marshall County, Alabama, United States. A post office served the area near Bucksnort and operated under the name Keel from 1889 to 1907.
