Banagher Glen is a nature reserve and forest park south of Dungiven in County Londonderry, Northern Ireland. It has been a National Nature Reserve since 1974 and is one of the largest and oldest ancient oak and ash woodlands in Ireland. It is also a Special Area of Conservation and the nature reserve is home to many native species of flora and fauna. In spring, bluebells cover much of the forest floor. The forest also provides an important habitat for butterflies and is home to many birds including the peregrine falcon and buzzards. According to Irish mythology the 'last serpent in Ireland', Lig na Paiste, lived in the Owenrigh river in Banagher Glen. According to legend Saint Patrick had missed the creature when he'd chased the snakes out of Ireland a few years earlier. The serpent began terrorising the local population, and according to some versions of the myth could breathe fire. St. Murrough O’ Heaney, who had a church in the valley, managed to trick the serpent and caged him forever underneath Lough Foyle. There are three trails that start from the Trailhead car park: Owenrigh River Trail - A 5km walk along the Owenrigh River. Reservoir Trail - A 6km trail to Banagher Dam and Altnaheglish Reservoir. The route is signposted and involves returning the same way. Forest Trail - A 11km looped trail which involves walking through Banagher Forest. The route is initially the same as the Reservoir Trail but is not signposted after the reservoir.

Dungiven GAC

St Canice's GAC Dungiven (Irish: Cumann Chainnigh Naofa Dún Geimhin) is a Gaelic Athletic Association club based in Dungiven, County Londonderry, Northern Ireland. It is part of Derry GAA. It currently caters for Gaelic football and Ladies' Gaelic football. The hurling club in the town is Kevin Lynch's. The club's biggest success was when they won the 1997 Ulster Senior Club Football Championship. They have also won the Derry Senior Football Championship on seven occasions, and the Derry GAA Senior Hurling Championship nine times. Dungiven GAC was a combined football and hurling club until 1981. Following the death of Kevin Lynch (an Irish National Liberation Army volunteer from Dungiven) on hunger strike the hurling team changed its name as a mark of respect and became a separate club.

South Londonderry (Northern Ireland Parliament constituency)

The South Londonderry constituency for the Parliament of Northern Ireland was created in 1929 and continued until the abolition of the Parliament in 1973. All members for the constituency were from the Chichester-Clark family: the first was both the son-in-law of the second and the father of the third. Dehra Parker had been elected (as Dehra Chichester) for County Londonderry in the 1921 and 1925 elections under the single transferable vote; she became a Dame before the 1953 election. Her grandson James Dawson Chichester-Clark was Prime Minister of Northern Ireland from 1969–1971 and after his resignation was created Baron Moyola in 1971. All three elected members were not only from the same party, but were close relations, as were the penultimate member of the South Londonderry constituency for the Westminster parliament in 1922 and the Westminster MP for Londonderry from 1955 to 1972.

Dungiven

Dungiven (from Irish Dún Geimhin, meaning 'Gevin's fort') is a small town, townland and civil parish in County Londonderry, Northern Ireland. It is near the main A6 Belfast to Derry road, which bypasses the town. It lies where the rivers Roe, Owenreagh and Owenbeg meet at the foot of the 1,525 ft (465 m) Benbradagh. Nearby is the Glenshane Pass, where the road rises to over 1,000 ft (300 m). It had a population of 3,346 people in the 2021 census. It is within Causeway Coast and Glens district council area.

Dungiven landmine and gun attack

On 24 June 1972, in the rural townland of Crabarkey near Dungiven, the Provisional IRA detonated an improvised land mine, killing three British Army soldiers in a Land Rover. It was one of many such landmine attacks by the IRA in rural areas in the 1970s.

Londonderry (Assembly constituency)

Londonderry was a constituency used for the Northern Ireland Assembly. The seat was first used for a Northern Ireland-only election for the Northern Ireland Assembly, 1973. Members were then elected from the constituency to the 1975 Constitutional Convention and the 1982 Assembly. After the Assembly dissolved in 1986, the constituency was not used again, its area being represented by parts of East Londonderry, Foyle and Mid Ulster. It usually shared boundaries with the Londonderry UK Parliament constituency, however the boundaries of the two constituencies were slightly different from 1983 to 1986 as the Assembly boundaries had not caught up with Parliamentary boundary changes.
