York Minster

The York Minster astronomical clock is a memorial to the airmen operating from bases in Yorkshire, Durham, and Northumberland who were killed in action during World War II, designed by R. Atkinson, and installed in York Minster in 1955.

The Diocese of York is an administrative division of the Church of England, part of the Province of York. It covers the city of York, the eastern part of North Yorkshire, and most of the East Riding of Yorkshire. The diocese is headed by the Archbishop of York and its cathedral is York Minster. The diocese is divided into three archdeaconries of Cleveland in the north (with a Bishop of Whitby), the East Riding (with a Bishop of Hull), and in the south-west the Archdeaconry of York (with a Bishop of Selby). The diocese was once much larger, covering Yorkshire, Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire and parts of Northumberland, Lancashire, Cumberland and Westmorland.

The Archbishop's Palace was the residence of the Archbishop of York during the later Middle Ages. It lay immediately north of York Minster, and its grounds are now known as Dean's Park.

A Roman column stands in Minster Yard in the English city of York. Originally built around the first century, by the soldiers of Legio IX Hispana, it was reused by Legion VI in the 4th century. It is believed to have been part of a group of sixteen freestanding columns (eight on each side of the nave), supporting the walls of an earlier church on the site. The column was discovered beneath York Minster during a 1969 excavation, and was given to the City of York three years later to mark the 1900th anniversary of the city's founding.The column is 7.6 metres (25 ft) tall and constructed of Magnesian Limestone and millstone grit. It now stands in front of the Minster School, in Minster Yard, on the southern side of York Minster.

10 Minster Yard is an historic building in the city of York, North Yorkshire, England. A Grade II listed building, located at the corner of Minster Gates at Minster Yard, the building dates to around 1763. It was part of the now-closed Minster School, and was built as the home of dean John Fountayne. 10 Minster Gates is located in the rear of the building. It is around 90 years older than the buildings behind it, numbers 2–8 Minster Gates, which are not on the same alignments as 10 Minster Yard and 10 and 10a Minster Gates.

The Adams House is a historic building in the city centre of York, in England. The house lies on Low Petergate, one of the main streets in the centre of York. It was built in 1772, for John Fountayne, the Dean of York. It originally incorporated a ground floor passageway through which the Deanery could be accessed. Construction cost £1,353 (equivalent to £184,003 in 2021), and was immediately let to one of the cathedral vergers, who then sub-let it. At a later date, the ground floor was converted into a shop, incorporating the former passageway.The building was Grade II* listed in 1954. For some time, it was a branch of Café Rouge, before becoming Jimmy's cafe-bar, and in 2022, a Fat Hippo burger bar.The three-storey building is built of brick, on a stone base. The original entrance doorway survives, with a second entrance having been created when the passageway was removed; the remainder of the ground floor facade is a shopfront, in similar style. There is a decorated cornice, and an original drainpipe head, with the crest of an elephant, the emblem of Fountayne. The rear facade is plainer, with various sash windows, and some blocked windows.Inside, the ground floor has been altered, but many rooms on the upper floors retain their original plasterwork and fireplaces, the grandest being in the first floor saloon. Two original staircases also survive.

41 and 43 Low Petergate is a historic building in the city centre of York, in England. The building lies on Low Petergate, one of the main streets in the city centre. The front section is a timber-framed building dating from the late 14th century. It was extended to the rear, in brick, in the 18th century. At the time, it was used as a coffee shop, and it remained the Garrick Coffee House until 1860. The building was Grade II* listed in 1954. Since 2011, it has housed a branch of Neal's Yard Remedies. The front of the three-storey building is jettied, with the timberwork covered in plaster and whitewashed. At ground floor level is a timber shopfront, with a 20th-century bow window. The upper floors have sash windows dating from the 1760s. The cornice has an elaborate drainpipe head, decorated with rosettes. The rear is also of three storeys, the left bay having a round-headed staircase window, with a sash above. Inside, much timber framing is visible, as is the crown post roof in the front section. Early features include the cellar door, the 18th-century first floor staircase, and a ladder staircase to the attic, along with 17th- and 18th-century panelling and doors in the front and back rooms on the first and second floors.

Petergate is a street in the city centre of York, in England. It is divided into High Petergate and Low Petergate. The well-known view of the Minster from Low Petergate is described by the City of York Council as "excellent".

33–35 High Petergate is a Mediaeval building in the city centre of York, in England. The oldest part of the building was constructed in the 14th century as part of a terrace facing Stonegate, this part now known as 60 Stonegate. The main part of the building, two houses now numbered 33 and 35 High Petergate, is timber framed and was originally of two jettied storeys, built at an unknown date. Around 1600, a jettied second floor and attic were added, and 60 Stonegate was combined with the High Petergate row. At the corner of the building is a dragon post inscribed ":ANNO:DO:1646".In the early-18th century, an extension was added at the rear of the building, doubling its depth. 33 Petergate was altered in early 19th century, and a small brick-built rear wing was added. Later in the century, shop fronts were inserted at ground level, and these survive. Inside, there are several early doors and the upper part of the staircase in 35 is also early, while the lower part is 18th century. The staircase in 33 is early 19th century.The building was grade II* listed in 1954. It is currently divided into two shops, with flats above.

St Michael le Belfrey is an Anglican church in York, England. It is situated at the junction of High Petergate and Minster Yard, directly opposite York Minster, in the centre of the city.

43 Stonegate is a historic, Grade II* listed building in the city centre of York, in England.The building was probably constructed in the 15th century. It was remodelled in the 17th century, and the front and roof were replaced in the late 18th century. At the time, it was the White Dog pub, which by the mid-19th century had become the White Hart Inn. Since 1991, it has housed the Pyramid Gallery.The building is timber framed and has three storeys and a cellar. Both of the upper storeys are jettied. There is a shop window at ground-floor level, while the upper floors have bay windows. The rear wall is of 18th-century brick. Inside, there is a historic cooking range in the cellar, in a stone fireplace. The main staircase is also historic, while on the second floor there is part of a frieze and several 17th-century doors.
