Plainfield Civic District

Grace Church or Grace Episcopal Church is a historic Episcopal church located at 600 Cleveland Avenue in Plainfield, Union County, New Jersey, United States. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on May 10, 2002, for its significance in architecture, art, and music from 1892 to 1930.

Plainfield is a city in Union County, in the U.S. state of New Jersey. Nicknamed "The Queen City,", it serves as both a regional hub for Central New Jersey and a bedroom suburb of the New York Metropolitan area, located in the Raritan Valley region. As of the 2020 United States census, the city's population, majority Latino for the first time, was 54,586. This was an increase of 4,778 (+9.6%) from the 2010 census count of 49,808, which in turn reflected an increase of 1,979 (+4.1%) from the 47,829 counted in the 2000 census. In 2022, the Census Bureau estimated the city's population to be 54,513.The area of present-day Plainfield was originally formed as Plainfield Township, a township that was created on April 5, 1847, from portions of Westfield Township, while the area was still part of Essex County. On March 19, 1857, Plainfield Township became part of the newly created Union County.Plainfield was incorporated as a city by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on April 21, 1869, from portions of Plainfield Township, based on the results of a referendum held that same day. The city and township coexisted until March 6, 1878, when Plainfield Township was dissolved and parts were absorbed by Plainfield city, with the remainder becoming Fanwood Township (now known as Scotch Plains).The name "Plainfield", also used in both North Plainfield and South Plainfield, is derived from a local estate or from its scenic location.

Plainfield is a NJ Transit railroad station on the Raritan Valley Line, in Plainfield, Union County, New Jersey, United States. One of two train stations in Plainfield, this station serves the central part of the city. The ticket office and waiting area are in the south side station house (the eastbound platform). It was the westernmost station on the line with ADA accessibility, until Somerville's new high-level platforms were opened on December 7, 2010.

The Plainfield Public School District is a comprehensive community public school district that serves students in kindergarten through twelfth grade from Plainfield, in Union County, New Jersey, United States. The district is one of 31 former Abbott districts statewide that were established pursuant to the decision by the New Jersey Supreme Court in Abbott v. Burke which are now referred to as "SDA Districts" based on the requirement for the state to cover all costs for school building and renovation projects in these districts under the supervision of the New Jersey Schools Development Authority.As of the 2018–19 school year, the district, comprising 13 schools, had an enrollment of 9,363 students and 615.4 classroom teachers (on an FTE basis), for a student–teacher ratio of 15.2:1.The district is classified by the New Jersey Department of Education as being in District Factor Group "B", the second lowest of eight groupings. District Factor Groups organize districts statewide to allow comparison by common socioeconomic characteristics of the local districts. Young Women's Christian Association of Plainfield and North Plainfield is a historic building in Plainfield, Union County, New Jersey, United States. It was built in 1924 and as the name suggests intended to serve young women of both Plainfield and North Plainfield. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1998.

The Orville T. Waring House is a historic building located at 900 Park Avenue in the city of Plainfield in Union County, New Jersey. Built in 1881, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places on May 14, 1979, for its significance in architecture, commerce, and industry. Orville Taylor Waring was an oil industry pioneer. The house was added as a contributing property to the Van Wyck Brooks Historic District on December 10, 1985.

Barack Obama Green Charter High School is a charter high school that serves students in ninth through twelfth grades in Plainfield, in Union County, New Jersey, United States, that focuses on education in the field of Sustainability and Leadership. The school operates on a charter granted by the New Jersey Department of Education. The charter for the school was approved in September 2009, as part of an announcement by Governor Jon Corzine of eight charter schools granted by the state in that cycle. After receiving approval from city's Board of Adjustment, the school opened in September 2010.As of the 2021–22 school year, the school had an enrollment of 231 students and 23.0 classroom teachers (on an FTE basis), for a student–teacher ratio of 10.0:1. There were 121 students (52.4% of enrollment) eligible for free lunch and 17 (7.4% of students) eligible for reduced-cost lunch.

The school has been accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Elementary and Secondary Schools since 1928.As of the 2021–22 school year, the school had an enrollment of 1,831 students and 129.0 classroom teachers (on an FTE basis), for a student–teacher ratio of 14.2:1. There were 1,219 students (66.6% of enrollment) eligible for free lunch and 190 (10.4% of students) eligible for reduced-cost lunch.

It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on December 12, 1980 for its significance in architecture, featuring Victorian houses built from 1870 to 1900. The district includes 111 contributing buildings.

The Van Wyck Brooks Historic District is a 99-acre (40 ha) historic district located in the city of Plainfield in Union County, New Jersey. Named after the author and literary critic Van Wyck Brooks, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places on December 10, 1985, for its significance in architecture. The district includes 109 contributing buildings. The Orville T. Waring House was added individually to the NRHP in 1979 and contributes to the district.
