Siege of Limerick (1642)

Limerick, in western Ireland was the scene of two sieges during the Irish Confederate Wars. The second and largest of these took place during the Cromwellian conquest of Ireland in 1650–51. Limerick was one of the last fortified cities held by an alliance of Irish Irish Confederates and Royalists against the forces of the English Parliament. Its garrison, led by Hugh Dubh O'Neill, surrendered to Henry Ireton after a protracted and bitter siege. Over 2,000 soldiers of Cromwell's New Model Army were killed at Limerick, and Henry Ireton, Cromwell's son-in-law, died of plague.

The Limerick Civic Trust is an environmental, architectural conservation and educational organisation founded in 1982 that works to identify, record, preserve and publicise Limerick's culture, history, environment and architectural heritage. Although the trust works in conjunction with local authorities, state agencies and various commercial and professional entities, it remains an independent organisation and is entirely self-funded.The trust has no direct connection with the Dublin Civic Trust although they do work in parallel and have at various times made joint annual budget submissions. A significant portion of the trust's work encompasses the protection and rejuvenation of the Georgian area of Limerick city around Newtown Pery. By 2002, the trust had helped to establish 13 of the more than 20 other civic trust organisations which now exist around Irish towns and cities including Dublin, Cork, Kilkenny, Galway, Belfast and Waterford. By 2002, it had also completed more than 90 projects since its own establishment.

Saint Mary's Cathedral, Limerick, is a cathedral of the Church of Ireland in Limerick, Ireland, which is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary. It is in the ecclesiastical province of Dublin. Previously the cathedral of the Diocese of Limerick, Ardfert and Aghadoe, it is now the central cathedral in the United Dioceses of Limerick and Killaloe.

King's Island is an area of central Limerick, Ireland. The area is often referred to colloquially as The Island and consists of two distinct areas, Englishtown and St Mary's Park. The historical city of Limerick known as Englishtown is located on the southern end and St Mary's Park; a local authority housing estate is located on the northern end. The island is formed from a distributary of the River Shannon. The Abbey River diverts from the Shannon before meeting it again at a confluence near the Potato Market. The island probably took its name after the 13th-century English King John's Castle was built. However, a 150AD map by Ptolemy shows a place called 'Regia' at the same site as King's Island, and history suggests the presence of earlier settlements in the area. The island's location offers an ideal defensive position at a natural river crossing.

The Hunt Museum (Irish: Iarsmalann Hunt) is a museum in the city of Limerick, Ireland. The Hunt Museum holds a personal collection donated by the Hunt family, it was originally situated in the University of Limerick, before being moved to its present location in Limerick's Georgian custom house in 1997. The Custom House is situated on Rutland Street on the banks of the River Shannon at its confluence with the Abbey River. Among the museum's collection are works by notable artists and designers such as Pablo Picasso, Jack B. Yeats, and Sybil Connolly as well as distinctive historical items such as the O'Dea Mitre and Crozier.

The Custom House is a Georgian-Palladian former custom house building in Limerick, Ireland. The building was constructed in local Irish limestone between 1765 and 1769 to a design by architect Davis Ducart. As of 2023, the building houses the Hunt Museum.

Rutland Street (Irish: Sráid Rutland) is a street in central Limerick, Ireland that forms part of the main central thoroughfare of the city which incorporates Rutland Street, Patrick Street and O'Connell Street. Named after the 4th Duke of Rutland, Charles Manners, who was appointed Lord Lieutenant of Ireland in 1784 and visited Limerick in 1785. Rutland Street along with nearby Bank Place features some of Limerick's earliest (and oldest) examples of Georgian Architecture. It was the first street developed as part of Edmund Sexton Pery's plans for Newtown Pery, and was the first part of the great Georgian expansion of Limerick south from the medieval city. In 1901, Irish nationalists suggested renaming the street to Hugh O'Neill Street.The Hunt Museum is located on Rutland Street. It is located in the former Customs House, designed by architect Davis Ducart. The building dates from 1769. The headquarters of Limerick Corporation were located in the old Town Hall on the street. Limerick Corporation moved to Merchant's Quay near the City Courthouse in 1990. This then became the Mid West Business Institute before it moved to Upper William Street.

Fanning's Castle (Irish: Caisleán Uí Fhionáin), also called Whitamore's Castle, is the remains of a tower house and National Monument located in Limerick, Ireland.

Athlunkard Street (Irish: Sráid Áth Longphuirt) is a street on King's Island, in Limerick City, Ireland. The Irish name is, Áth Longphuirt, meaning "ford of the longphort," refers to a 9th-century Viking longphort (defended ship encampment) once located at that ford over the Shannon. Athlunkard Street stretches from the Abbey River, at the O'Dwyer Bridge to the intersection with Mary Street and Nicholas Street. The Arthlunkard name continues over O'Dwyer Bridge with Athlunkard Avenue in Corbally, and the Athlunkard Bridge in Corbally, across the River Shannon from the townland of Athlunkard, County Clare.

Patrick Street (Irish: Sráid Phádraig) is a street in central Limerick, Ireland. The street forms part of the main central thoroughfare of the city which incorporates Patrick Street, Rutland Street and O'Connell Street. The street is named after Patrick "Patt" Arthur (1717–1799), a member of the prominent Arthur family at the time. The streets of Francis Street, Ellen Street and Arthur's Quay are also named after the Arthur family. The street was renovated in the early 1990s during the construction of Arthur's Quay Shopping Centre which forms the west side of the street. The shopping centre is mainly inward facing, which does not add much to footfall on the street. The east side of the street was part of the planned Opera Centre development. As a result, much of this section of the street lay derelict with no business activity for some time.The Victorian-era soprano, Catherine Hayes, was born at 4 Patrick Street in 1818.
