Paparua

Templeton is a small town on the outskirts of Christchurch. Lying along State Highway 1. Templeton has been the centre of harness racing in Canterbury.Its European history goes to over 140 years when it was a watering point for horses between Christchurch and the Selwyn River / Waikirikiri. Templeton Hospital has had a major impact on the area, providing employment and controversy over many years.More recently Ruapuna Park has created public debate regarding acceptable noise levels for residents near motor-sports venues. Paparua to the north of Templeton has Christchurch's men's and women's prisons.

Euromarque Motorsport Park (often referred to as Ruapuna) is a permanent motor racing circuit owned and operated by the Canterbury Car Club Inc on land leased from the Christchurch City Council. It is located at 107 Hasketts Road in Templeton, 13-kilometre (8.1 mi) west of Christchurch, New Zealand. It was opened as Ruapana Park in 1963, and between 2004 and 2013 was known as Powerbuilt Raceway at Ruapuna Park. Mike Pero joined the circuit as title sponsor from 2013-2023, as Mike Pero Motorsport Park. In the early parts of February 2023, the sponsorship deal was over, and Euromarque became the new title sponsor.The track also features a drag strip, pit garages, racing school, speedway circuit and even a radio controlled car circuit. There are a number of configurations of the circuit with licences from FIA Grade 3 to National grades 1, 2 and 3.

The Yaldhurst Museum is located in the suburb of Yaldhurst, Christchurch, New Zealand, close to Christchurch International Airport, Riccarton Race Course and Ruapuna Speedway. The museum has a large collection of road transport vehicles, and it opened to the public in 1968.

Islington is a suburb on the western side of Christchurch city. The suburb is named after the London borough of Islington, perhaps because the borough had a market for cattle, while the Christchurch area had a freezing works opened in 1889.State Highway 1 and the Main South Line run past the southern side of Islington.

Yaldhurst is a semi-rural suburb on the western outskirts of Christchurch city. Frederick William Delamain (1835–1910), a settler and horse breeder, named a horse Yaldhurst after some stables in England. The area was named after the horse.The Yaldhurst Museum is a private museum specialising in displays of land vehicles and technology.Yaldhurst electorate extended over a larger rural area west of Christchurch from 1978 to 1996.

Orana Wildlife Park is New Zealand's only open-range zoo, sitting on 80 hectares of land, located on the outskirts of Christchurch. It opened in 1976, and is owned and operated by the Orana Wildlife Trust, a registered charity. The aims of the Trust are to provide quality recreational opportunities for local people and visitors to Christchurch; conserve endangered native and exotic wildlife; educate visitors (especially children) about environmental and conservation issues; and support research relating to endangered animals. Orana generates over 95% of its income through gate takings and other trading activities. Fundraising is an essential focus; Orana must separately raise 100% of funds for all capital projects, improvements and animal transfers. Funds have been donated from a variety of sources, including philanthropic trusts, private donors and bequests. As of 2017, over $15M has been raised to develop the Park. All buildings and enclosures except the Great Ape Centre have been built in-house. Many local businesses have assisted in the Park's construction by donating materials, consultancy and equipment. In 2013 the park suffered a number of setbacks, including an ape escape, snowstorms and wind damage, and was forced to close its doors for 10 days.In 2015 Orana became home to New Zealand's only gorillas, with three males, including a silverback arriving at the park.

McLeans Island is a rural area north and northwest of Christchurch city, and south of Waimakariri River.The area was an island in the Waimakariri River until the 1930s, when flood control measures and Great Depression work schemes blocked the south branch of the river which separated the island from the south bank. It was named for the Scottish McLean family, who established Waimakariri Station on the south bank in the 1850s. Allan and John McLean owned the land after their brother Robertson returned to Scotland.Part of the area is in Waimakariri River Regional Park, which contains McLeans Forest where there are walking, running and cycling tracks. Orana Wildlife Park is a zoo in the area.

Hei Hei is a suburb of Christchurch, New Zealand. It is located in the west of Christchurch 11 kilometres (6.8 mi) from the central city, and is bisected by State Highway 1. The area was subdivided for poultry farming after World War I for returning serviceman, but the venture failed due to the poor soil conditions. The place name is related to the Māori word for chicken (heihei) due to the area's poultry farming history.

Hornby High School is a state coeducational secondary school located in the western Christchurch, New Zealand suburb of Hornby. It caters for approximately 743 students from Years 7 to 13 (ages 10 to 18).

The Hornby Clocktower (also known as the Hornby Clock Tower or simply as the clock tower to local residents) was an iconic Christchurch building, situated in the suburb of Hornby on New Zealand State Highway 1. It marked the southern entrance to Christchurch for over 50 years.Less than three months after a full refurbishment in 2010, the building was damaged in the 2011 Christchurch earthquake and subsequent aftershocks. It was demolished by October 2014.

Christchurch Football Centre, is a multi-purpose stadium in the suburb of Russley in Christchurch, New Zealand. It is used for football matches and is the home stadium of Southern League and National League side Christchurch United.

Broomfield is a suburb on the western side of Christchurch city. The suburb is named for an estate farmed by Rev. James Wilson (1813–1886), which he named after a place near Leith in Scotland. The estate was subdivided from 1908, and the suburb was named in the 1970s. Most of the housing has been built since 2010.State Highway 1 runs through the suburb, and State Highway 73 forms its northwestern boundary.
