Athlone is the name given to two bordering townlands in County Westmeath, Ireland. The townlands are in the civil parish of St. Mary's. The northern townland covers much of the northern area of the town of Athlone, with the M6 motorway cutting through the northern part of the area. The southern townland contains most of the shopping district of the town, including the Athlone Towncentre shopping centre. Athlone railway station is also within the southern townland. Both townlands are bordered to the west by the River Shannon. The neighbouring townlands include Cloghanboy (Homan), Clonbrusk, Warrensfields, Ankers Bower, Cloghanboy West, Curragh (Mechum), Golden Island (St George), Loughanaskin, Retreat to the east, and Golden Island (Kilmaine) to the south.

Athlone (; Irish: Baile Átha Luain, meaning 'The town of Luan's ford' [ˌbʲlʲɑː ˈl̪ˠuənʲ]) is a town on the border of County Roscommon and County Westmeath, Ireland. It is located on the River Shannon near the southern shore of Lough Ree. It is the second most populous town in the Midlands Region with a population of 22,869 in the 2022 census. Most of the town lies on the east bank of the river, within the townland of the same name; however, by the terms of the Local Government Act of 1898, six townlands on the west bank of the Shannon, formerly in County Roscommon, were incorporated into the town, and consequently, into the county of Westmeath. Around 100 km west of Dublin, Athlone is near the geographical centre of Ireland, which is 8.85 kilometres (5.50 mi) north-northwest of the town, in the area of Carnagh East in County Roscommon.

The Midland Region (coded IE063) is a NUTS Level III statistical region of Ireland. It consists of the territory of the counties of Laois, Offaly, Westmeath and Longford. The Midland Region spans 6,652 km2, 9.5% of the total area of the state and, according to the 2022 census, had a population of 317,999. Before 2014, the region was governed by the Midland Regional Authority. The Authority was abolished in 2014. Midland now exists as a strategic planning area within the Eastern and Midland Region. The NUTS regions are used for statistical reporting to Eurostat, while the Regional Assemblies are responsible for planning at a local government level. The Midland Region is also a tourist destination due to its natural environment which includes lakes, waterways and canals, as well as a history, heritage and culture which dates from early Christian times.

Sean's Bar is a pub in Athlone, Ireland, notable for its reputed establishment in AD 900, and claim to being the oldest extant bar in Ireland. Other architectural and archaeological records, including the Record of Monuments and Places and the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage, date the building to the 17th or 18th century.

The Luan Gallery is a publicly owned art gallery in Athlone, Westmeath, Ireland. The gallery opened in 2012, and the building consists of the older part, a former public library built in 1897 as a temperance hall, combined with a newer wing, designed by Keith Williams. The building was named Best Cultural Building of 2013 by the RIAI, and received a Civic Trust Award in 2014. The gallery takes its name from Luan son of Lugair son of Lugaid, a mythical chief who gives his name to the town.

Athlone Towncentre is a shopping centre located in Athlone, County Westmeath. It opened in November 2007. The shopping centre is the largest shopping centre in the Irish midlands with over 13,000 square metres of retail space, over 60 stores, consisting of many big retail brands, such as, ZARA, TK Maxx, Marks and Spencer, River Island, Starbucks, Tommy Hilfiger, JD Sports, Topshop, Next, Skechers and H&M. This is located at the former Royal Hoey Hotel which closed in 2002, and was demolished in 2005, to make way for the Athlone Towncentre. The shopping centre is located close to the centre of Athlone town, on a site accessible from Dublin Gate Street and Gleeson Street. The 4-star Sheraton Athlone Hotel adjoins the site and has 161 beds.

Burgess Park is a public park in Athlone, County Westmeath, Ireland. The park is located in the townland of Goldenisland (Kilmaine), on the banks of the River Shannon, which forms the border with County Roscommon. The park contains a memorial garden, playground, walking trails and recreational areas.

Athlone railway station is a station which serves the town of Athlone in County Roscommon and County Westmeath. It is located in the town on the east side of the river Shannon. The station is an interchange station between the Dublin-Galway and Dublin-Westport rail services. In addition it is located adjacent to the town's bus station. There are three platforms, of which Numbers 2 and 3 are an island platform.
