Hunslet railway station

The Middleton Railway is the world's oldest continuously working railway, situated in the English city of Leeds. It was founded in 1758 and is now a heritage railway, run by volunteers from The Middleton Railway Trust Ltd. since 1960. The railway operates passenger services at weekends and on public holidays over approximately 1 mile (1.6 km) of track between its headquarters at Moor Road, in Hunslet, and Park Halt, on the outskirts of Middleton Park.

Hunslet was a rural district of the administrative county of Yorkshire, West Riding from 1894 to 1937. The rural district was created by the Local Government Act 1894 as successor to the Hunslet Rural Sanitary District. It lay to the south of the county borough of Leeds, and initially consisted of four civil parishes: Middleton Oulton with Woodlesford Templenewsham Thorpe StapletonThe council offices were in Hunslet within the county borough. In 1920 the area of the rural district was reduced when Middleton was included in the enlarged boundaries of Leeds. Five years later the parish of Thorpe Stapleton, with a population at the 1921 census of just 23, was absorbed by Templenewsham. In 1928 a further extension of the City of Leeds took in Templenewsham, leaving the rural district with the single parish of Oulton with Woodlesford. The district was abolished in 1937 by a county review order, with its area included in an enlarged Rothwell Urban District.

Hunslet (English: ) is an inner-city area in south Leeds, West Yorkshire, England. It is 1 mile (1.6 km) southeast of the city centre and has an industrial past. It is situated in the Hunslet and Riverside ward of Leeds City Council and Leeds Central parliamentary constituency. The population of the previous City and Hunslet council ward at the 2011 census was 33,705.Many engineering companies were based in Hunslet, including John Fowler & Co. manufacturers of traction engines and steam rollers, the Hunslet Engine Company builders of locomotives (including those used during the construction of the Channel Tunnel), Kitson & Co., Manning Wardle and Hudswell Clarke. Many railway locomotives were built in the Jack Lane area of Hunslet. The area has a mixture of modern and 19th century industrial buildings, terraced housing and 20th century housing. It is an area that has grown up significantly around the River Aire in the early years of the 21st century, especially with the construction of modern riverside flats. It was at one point the main production site for Leeds Creamware, a type of pottery (still produced) so called because of its cream glazing. Hunslet is now prospering as it follows the trend of Leeds generally and the expansion of office and industrial sites south of Leeds city centre.

John Fowler & Co Engineers of Leathley Road, Hunslet, Leeds, West Yorkshire, England produced traction engines and ploughing implements and equipment, as well as railway equipment. Fowler also produced the Track Marshall tractor which was a tracked version of the Field Marshall. British Railways Engineering Department locomotives ED1 to ED7 were built by Fowler

Leeds Midland Road depot is a locomotive and rolling stock maintenance facility located in Leeds, West Yorkshire, England. The site is located a few miles to the south-east of Leeds station on the line between Leeds and Castleford. Owned and operated by Freightliner, it is the heavy maintenance facility for its diesel and electric locomotives and wagon fleet.

University Technical College Leeds is a university technical college (UTC) in Hunslet, Leeds, England, which opened in September 2016. The UTC is sponsored by the University of Leeds and several local employers.The college forms part of an educational hub in the north of Hunslet, with Leeds City College's Printworks Campus using the former Alf Cooke printworks building, Leeds College of Building's Cudbear Street site, and the Ruth Gorse Academy all in close proximity to each other.The college is based in a formerly disused part of Braime Pressings' factory on Hunslet Road.

The Alf Cooke printworks is a grade II listed former industrial building by Thomas Ambler, now the Printworks Campus of Leeds City College in Leeds, West Yorkshire, England. It was built in 1881 and rebuilt after a fire in 1894.

Leeds Hunslet Lane railway station was opened by the North Midland Railway in Leeds in 1840 in what was then a middle-class area, south of the city. Designed by Francis Thompson, the trainshed consisted of an iron roof in four spans, with five lines running into it. Three of the lines were used for stabling carriages not in use under the central span, and each outer span had one line with a platform 300 yards (274 m) long. Turntables were provided at each end and the offices on the western side were fronted by an arcade with an arch surmounted with the arms of Leeds, Sheffield and Derby.It was shared by the Manchester and Leeds Railway, which ran on the NMR tracks from just north of Normanton since Parliament had refused to sanction two lines running side by side. It was replaced by the Midland Railway in 1846 by Leeds Wellington railway station and became a goods depot which closed in 1972. The site is now occupied by the Crown Point Retail Park, which opened in 1989.

Parkside was a rugby league stadium in Hunslet, Leeds, England. It was home to Hunslet F.C. rugby league club and the source of their nickname, the Parksiders. Hunslet now play at the South Leeds Stadium which is less than half a mile from the former site of Parkside.

Stratford Street Mosque (officially the Omar Mosque or Masjid-e-Umar) is a mosque in Beeston, Leeds, England. Three people responsible for the 7 July 2005 London bombings (Shehzad Tanweer, Mohammad Sidique Khan and Hasib Hussain) were regulars at Friday prayers at the mosque. Stratford Street mosque is just a few streets away from the Colwyn Road home of Tanweer, who caused the Aldgate explosion.Mumir Shah, the imam of the mosque, condemned the London bombings at Friday prayers a day after the attacks, telling worshippers "that all human beings are brothers because of our grandfather, Adam (reported elsewhere as Abraham)" and that the message of Islam is one of "peace and friendship."

The Ruth Gorse Academy is a mixed secondary school located in Leeds, West Yorkshire, England. The school forms part of the Gorse Academies Trust which also includes The Farnley Academy, The Morley Academy and Elliott Hudson College.
