Aughrim Ringforts

The Battle of Aughrim (Irish: Cath Eachroma) was the decisive battle of the Williamite War in Ireland. It was fought between the largely Irish Jacobite army loyal to James II and the forces of William III on 12 July 1691 (old style, equivalent to 22 July new style), near the village of Aughrim, County Galway. The battle was one of the bloodiest ever fought in Britain and Ireland; 7,000 people were killed. The Jacobite defeat at Aughrim meant the effective end of James's cause in Ireland, although the city of Limerick held out until the autumn of 1691.

Aughrim (Irish: Eachroim, meaning 'horse ridge') is a small village in County Galway, Ireland. It is located between the towns of Loughrea and Ballinasloe, along the old N6 national primary road (now listed as the R446 regional road) that used to be the main road between Galway and Dublin. According to the Irish census of 2011, the division had a population of 595. The village is in a civil parish of the same name. It was in Aughrim that the Marquis de St Ruth prepared the Irish Catholic Jacobite troops for the Battle of Aughrim, which was fought during the Williamite war in Ireland on 12 July 1691. Two ringforts located to the south (in Attidermot townland) are a National Monument.

Clonmacnowen (Irish: Clann Mhac nEoghain; also Clonmacnoon) is a historical barony in eastern County Galway, Ireland. Baronies were mainly cadastral rather than administrative units. They acquired modest local taxation and spending functions in the 19th century before being superseded by the Local Government (Ireland) Act 1898.

Kilclooney or Kilcloony (Irish: Cill Chluaine) is a townland and civil parish in County Galway, Ireland. It is one of three civil parishes in which Ballinasloe is located. It is regarded as the place in which Saint Grellan settled and established a church, which has since been replaced by the currently-standing, run-down church.

St. Joseph's College, Garbally Park (Irish: Coláiste Sheosaimh) was an Irish voluntary Catholic secondary school situated in Garbally Park, the former seat of the Earl of Clancarty, in Ballinasloe, County Galway. It was a single-sex boys day school which had previously served as a boarding school. It was more commonly known as Garbally College (Irish: Coláiste Ghearrbhaile). It amalgamated with Ardscoil Mhuire in September 2025 to become Clonfert College.

Cloonigny Castle is a ruined tower house and moated site in the townland of Cloonigny in County Galway, Ireland. The castle site, which is a protected national monument, is 4 km (2½ mile) northeast of Kilconnell.

Clonfert College (Irish: Coláiste Chluain Fearta) is an Irish Catholic co-educational secondary school situated in Ballinasloe, County Galway. It opened in September 2025 as a result of the amalgamation of Garbally College and Ardscoil Mhuire and operates between two campuses in Garbally Park, the former seat of the Earl of Clancarty, and Mackney respectively. It is under the dual trusteeship of the Bishop of Clonfert and Catholic Education an Irish Schools Trust (CEIST).

Ardscoil Mhuire was an Irish voluntary Catholic single-sex girls' secondary school situated in Mackney, near Ballinasloe in County Galway. It was under the trusteeship of Catholic Education an Irish Schools Trust (CEIST). It amalgamated with Garbally College in September 2025 to become Clonfert College.

Derrymullan (Irish: Doire an Mhaoláin, meaning 'Mullen's Wood'), also Derrymullen, is a 226-acre townland on the north side of Ballinasloe in County Galway, Ireland. It is in the barony of Clonmacnowen and the civil parish of Kilcloony.

Portiuncula University Hospital (Irish: Ospidéal Ollscoile Phortiuncula) is a public hospital in Ballinasloe, County Galway, Ireland. It is managed by Saolta University Health Care Group. The hospital is on Brackernagh, a principal road in Ballinasloe, forming part of the R446 road. Counties in the hospital's catchment area are east Galway, Westmeath, north Tipperary, Roscommon and Offaly.

Ballinasloe railway station (Irish: Stáisiún Iarnróid Bhéal Átha na Sluaighe) is a railway station in Ballinasloe, County Galway. It is operated by Iarnród Éireann (IÉ). Opened in 1851, this railway station is a fine and imposing Tudor style building, designed by George Wilkinson. The station is on the Dublin to Galway Rail service. Passengers to or from Westport travel to Athlone and change trains. Passengers to or from Limerick and Ennis travel to Athenry and change trains.

Duggan Park (Irish: Páirc Ó Dubhagain) is a GAA stadium in Ballinasloe, County Galway, Ireland. The ground, named after the Catholic Bishop of Clonfert Patrick Duggan, was opened in 1934 and has a capacity of 3,000.
