Astoria Boulevard station

Columbus is a statue in Astoria, Queens created by Angelo Racioppi with funds from the New York City Works Progress Administration Art Project. It sits in Columbus Square park. Dedicated in 1941, it is in bronze on a cast stone base. It depicts Christopher Columbus as a young, energetic explorer at the helm. The base the statue sits on suggests the prow of a ship.

The Bohemian Citizens' Benevolent Society is a private benevolent society founded in 1892 in Astoria, Queens to support Czech and Slovak immigrants to the area, as well as people of Czech and Slovak ancestry. The Society is commonly known as "Bohemian Hall", for the historic structure (NRHP) in which it is located.

Astoria is a neighborhood in the western portion of the New York City borough of Queens. Astoria is bounded by the East River and is adjacent to three other Queens neighborhoods: Long Island City to the southwest, Sunnyside to the southeast, and Woodside to the east. As of 2019, Astoria has an estimated population of 95,446.The area was originally called Hallet's (or Hallett's) Cove after its first landowner William Hallet, who settled there in 1652 with his wife, Elizabeth Fones. Hallet's Cove was incorporated on April 12, 1839, and was later renamed for John Jacob Astor, then the wealthiest man in the United States, in order to persuade him to invest in the area. During the second half of the 19th century, economic and commercial growth brought increased immigration. Astoria and several other surrounding villages were incorporated into Long Island City in 1870, which in turn was incorporated into the City of Greater New York in 1898. Commercial activity continued through the 20th century, with the area being a center for filmmaking and industry. Astoria is located in Queens Community District 1 and its ZIP Codes are 11101, 11102, 11103, 11105, and 11106. It is patrolled by the New York City Police Department's 114th Precinct. Politically, Astoria is represented by the New York City Council's 22nd and 26th Districts.

Steinway Street is a major street in the borough of Queens in New York City, New York, in the United States. Steinway Street is a 2.4 mile two-way street that runs north-south between Berrian Boulevard in Astoria and Northern Boulevard in Long Island City. South of the Grand Central Parkway, Steinway Street is a major commercial district that is the primary section of a Business improvement district called Steinway Astoria Partnership.Richard Hellmann, creator of Hellmann's mayonnaise, had his first big factory at 495 / 497 Steinway Street from 1915 to 1922. In 1922, operations moved to a larger factory at 34-08 Northern Boulevard.Steinway Street is accessible by subway at the subway station of the same name (E, ​M, and ​R trains). The Q101 bus travels along Steinway Street from 20th Avenue to Northern Boulevard.

Norwood Gardens is a small planned community in Astoria, Queens, bounded by 35th, 36th and 37th Streets between 31st Avenue and 30th Avenue. Norwood Gardens was planned and developed during a period of expansion in New York City. With the opening of the Queensboro Bridge in 1909 and the extension of the New York City Subway to Astoria–Ditmars Boulevard in 1915, Astoria and Long Island City were forever changed from outlying suburbs to centrally connected communities. The Queens Chamber of Commerce published sales brochures advertising Norwood Gardens as “Country Living In The City”. The houses were developed by Rickert Brown and designed to offer middle-income families a better quality of life than that typically found in a large, metropolitan city in the early part of the century. Norwood Gardens includes many two-family detached homes, a unique block of one-family attached homes east side of 37th Street and thirty unique attached terrace homes on 36th Street. The 36th Street homes were popularly called Doctor’s Row due to doctors combining their practice offices under their living quarters. The 36th Street terrace homes were designed by Walter Hopkins, an architect with Warren & Wetmore, which designed other structures such as Grand Central Terminal. The thirty attached terrace homes showcased 25-foot front gardens planted with California privet hedges, over 22 kinds of evergreens (many 10–12 feet tall) and a large variety of flowering shrubs. Norwood Gardens’ homes were designed to provide circulating fresh air and sunlight. The interior floor plans maximized use of space, making the homes attractive to families. The exterior design is a lively combination of white stucco and red tapestry brick. The mortar is a mix of bright white lime with a quartz aggregate that sparkles and accentuates the brick. Additional architectural elements include iron balconies, lattice work, green blinds, cement flower pots on the roof, red Italianate tiles, planter supports in the shape of lambs heads and a variety of architectural medallions embedded in the brick. The original bathroom fixtures were manufactured by J. L. Mott Iron Works of Manhattan; the company's namesake also gave rise to the name of Mott Street in Chinatown, Manhattan. In 1929, Norwood Gardens terrace homes sold for $15,000 and the slightly larger corner homes for $16,000. Metropolitan Life Insurance Company underwrote the mortgages for the terrace homes. Twenty-nine exteriors of the thirty terrace homes remain in near original state.

Saint Demetrios Preparatory School is a private Greek Orthodox Christian school located in Astoria, Queens, New York City. It is the largest Greek-American and Greek Orthodox day school in the United States, as well as the only Greek Orthodox high school in the United States. It enrolls students from preschool to twelfth grade. The school is associated with the Saint Demetrios Cathedral.

Cassinelli Pasta was a pasta company based on 23rd Avenue in Astoria, Queens. The company was founded in Manhattan in 1912 by Peter and Adele Cassinelli, and operated for 101 years before being closed down in 2023. It was also based in New Jersey for a short time, but moved to Astoria permanently in the 1930s, which at the time was heavily Italian-American. A combination shop and pasta factory that made fresh daily pasta, it was named the best fresh pasta in New York City by New York magazine in 2001, and delivered frequently to upscale Manhattan restaurants. The business was run for numerous years by Tony Bonfigli and Nella Costella, who had purchased the business from Adele in 1972. After the death of Costella in 2022, Bonfigli decided to retire, resulting in the shop's permanent closure.

Sal, Kris & Charlie's Deli, also known as The Sandwich King of Astoria, is a deli located on 33-12 23rd Avenue in Astoria, Queens, near the Astoria–Ditmars Boulevard station. Established in 1940, it was run since then by the Gordon family. In 1987, Charlie Gordon became the shop's third owner until his death in 2019 at the age of 60, after which it was inherited by his son, John Gordon. The deli is named after him, his wife, Kris, and the shop's counterman, Sal, with the "Sandwich King" name coming from Charlie's nickname at the time. While the deli used to sell canned goods and small $1 sandwiches, Charlie, a former baker, preferred heavy sandwiches, and specialized the deli as a sandwich restaurant selling 14-inch-long heroes. The restaurant's most well-known sandwich is "The Bomb", a mix of Italian and American cold cuts topped with American and Provolone cheese, lettuce, onions, tomatoes, hot peppers, sweet peppers, and mayonnaise and vinegar. It was invented by accident when a customer told Charlie he could make whatever he wanted, and the resulting sandwich caught on with customers. In 2013, an airplane passenger, Jason Michael Cruz, was detained by the TSA after discussing the sandwich with a friend and claiming he "had the wrong kind of bomb", which was mistaken for a terrorist threat. Other foods served by the deli include coffee and house-made pickled peppers that are also used to top their sandwiches.
