Eastern Bay

Claiborne is an unincorporated community in Talbot County, Maryland, United States. The village is located on the eastern shore of the Chesapeake Bay near the mouth of the Eastern Bay at 38°50′15″N 76°16′40″W, and uses ZIP code 21624. The 2000 U.S. Census listed the population as 147 and the number of homes as 84, slightly down from its 1941 population of 156. Between 1890 and 1930, the village was a busy port for passenger and then automobile ferry service across the Chesapeake Bay, with numerous stores and motels/resorts, including Maple Hall and the Bellfonte Hotel. A post office was added in 1893 and the Protestant Episcopal Church of Claiborne was built in 1898. In 1912, an elementary school and Methodist Church were added. Before 1912, students attended school in nearby McDaniel. The town's first school consisted of the kitchen of the local railroad pavilion, used as a classroom. In 1913, the town became home to the Claiborne Fresh Air Association, Inc., (“Miracle House”) which was formed for the purpose of providing 10 weeks of fresh air and summer vacation for children who had been exposed to tuberculosis. The role of Claiborne as a terminal for cross-Bay ferries was diminished in 1930 when the primary route shifted to Matapeake in Kent Island. It ended altogether in 1938 when the direct connection from Annapolis to Claiborne was terminated and only an auxiliary shuttle between Claiborne and Romancoke on Kent Island remained. This shuttle service ended in 1952, a few months after the opening of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge; thus ending all ferry service to Claiborne after more than six decades.

Sherwood Manor, also known as Sherwood's Neck, is a historic home about four miles west of Saint Michaels, Talbot County, Maryland. It is a post-Revolutionary War brick structure located on a small point of land in Hemmersley Creek. The house is a five bay, two story brick structure, with an unusual pair of inset panels, the size of windows, on both stories of the west gable end. It was acquired in 1771 by Matthew Tilghman, a Maryland statesman and onetime member of the Continental Congress, to augment his own large property holdings in the area, which included his home at Rich Neck Manor. Matthew Tilghman's son, Lloyd Tilghman, occupied the Sherwood property and built Sherwood Manor some time before 1798.Sherwood Manor was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977.

McDaniel is an unincorporated community in Talbot County, Maryland, United States. McDaniel is located along Maryland Route 33, south of Claiborne and a short distance east of the Chesapeake Bay.

Romancoke is a census-designated place on Queen Anne's in Maryland, United States, located at the southern terminus of Maryland Route 8. Romancoke was changed from an unincorporated community to a census-designated place for the 2020 Census listing a population of 1,855. The name "Romancoke" comes from the Algonquian word for "circling of the water." William Claiborne, who founded Kent Island, also had a plantation in Virginia named Romancoke.Romancoke was once linked with Claiborne via the Romancoke-Claiborne ferry; however, the ferry service terminated on December 31, 1952. This was five months after the Chesapeake Bay Bridge was opened. Today, Romancoke is almost purely residential and is part of Stevensville's postal area.

Dominion is an unincorporated community located in Kent Island (the largest island in the Chesapeake Bay) which is in Queen Anne's County, Maryland, United States. Dominion is located along Maryland Route 552, 2 miles (3.2 km) south of Chester.

The Second Battle of St. Michaels was a raid conducted on Maryland's Eastern Shore by British soldiers during the War of 1812. The raid occurred on August 26, 1813, at points between Tilghman Island and the town of St. Michaels, Maryland. Local militia defended against the raiders. The Maryland Eastern Shore communities had access to the Chesapeake Bay, which was the main shipping route to important American cities such as Baltimore and Washington, D.C. St. Michaels was one of the communities with access to the bay, and was a target for the British because of its shipbuilding. About two weeks earlier, the town was successfully defended by artillerists from the local militia when British forces attacked on August 10 in the Battle of St. Michaels. A large British force landed on the shore at Auld's Point early in the morning on August 26. After marching to the main road, the force split into a small group of 300 and a large group of about 1,800. The small group moved toward Tilghman Island in pursuit of a militia company. Two merchant vessels were burned and a small number of militiamen were captured. Most of the militia fled to safety. The larger group of British moved toward St. Michaels. They were confronted by Maryland militia numbering less than one third of the size of the British force. After a short exchange of artillery and musket fire, the British mysteriously withdrew.

The James E. Kirwan House and Store is a living museum located south of the village of Chester on Kent Island, Queen Anne's County, Maryland. It served as a general store, lumber mill, cooper's mill, and blacksmith shop between 1889 and 1955 and facilitated local trade as a port on Kirwan Creek. The estate was donated to the Kent Island Heritage Society in 1998 to be run as a museum.

The Doncaster Town Site is an archeological site near Easton, Talbot County, Maryland. The site is located on one of the earliest land grants in Talbot County, surveyed on October 18, 1658. It is the location of the first Roman Catholic Church erected on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. The town was erected in 1684 and was one of the first planned towns in Maryland. At its peak Doncaster would have contained inns, a chapel, warehouses, a ferry, stores, stocks and a whipping post, a public square, and a number of residences. Archeological deposits were recorded in 1961. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.

Kent Island is the largest island in the Chesapeake Bay and a historic place in Maryland. To the east, a narrow channel known as the Kent Narrows barely separates the island from the Delmarva Peninsula, and on the other side, the island is separated from Sandy Point, an area near Annapolis, by roughly four miles (6.4 km) of water. At only four miles wide, the main waterway of the bay is at its narrowest at this point and is spanned here by the Chesapeake Bay Bridge. The Chester River runs to the north of the island and empties into the Chesapeake Bay at Kent Island's Love Point. To the south of the island lies Eastern Bay. The United States Census Bureau reports that the island has 31.62 square miles (81.90 km2) of land area.Kent Island is part of Queen Anne's County, Maryland, and Maryland's Eastern Shore region. The first English establishment on the island, Kent Fort, was founded in 1631, making Kent Island the oldest English settlement within the present day state of Maryland and the third oldest permanent English settlement in what became the United States—after Jamestown, Virginia (1607), and Plymouth, Massachusetts (1620). The census-designated places of Stevensville and Chester are located on the island, along with several other communities, including the fishing community of Kent Narrows, which is located partially on the island. Although all of Kent Island's communities are unincorporated, the census designated places of Stevensville and Chester on the island are both more populous than any of Queen Anne's County's incorporated towns.

Mattapax is a historic home located at Stevensville, Queen Anne's County, Maryland, United States. It is a 1+1⁄2-story brick house, three bays wide, and one room deep, with flush brick chimneys at either end of a pitched gable roof built about 1760. In 1949 a restoration resulted in the construction of a brick wing to replace an earlier frame wing. Also on the property are a frame cottage, a large horse barn, and a frame wagon shed.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1998.

The Kent Island Research Facility is a U.S. National Security Agency facility located on Kent Island, Maryland, near the town of Chester.The facility was established in 1961 to conduct research on very high frequency and microwave antenna systems—specifically, on problems associated with anomalous propagation in communications interception. According to James Bamford in 1983, the location consists of the NSA Propagation Research Laboratory, a single-story, white, windowless building that houses automatically operating, unattended equipment, as well as a small, white cinder-block "control" building surrounded in a barbed-wire fence. Near the control building are a number of unusual antennas.In 2016, the United States government shuttered various Russian diplomat vacation facilities, including one that, according to Australian security expert Des Ball, was well positioned to spy on the NSA’s "Propagation and Research Laboratory" on Kent Island.

Legg's Dependence, also known as Long Creek Farm and William E. Porter Farm, is a historic home located at Stevensville, Queen Anne's County, Maryland. It is a 2+1⁄2-story center-hall plan brick house. It was built in several stages beginning around 1760–80, as a single-story hall/parlor plan dwelling. It was enlarged to its present form during the second quarter of the 19th century.The estate at one point was home to an enslaved husband and wife, Sling and Sarah Louis, who were sold through a trader in Richmond, Virginia to the owner of a plantation near Ashbie's Gap in Virginia. One or both of Sling and Sarah's parents later escaped with the help of Harriet Tubman and found their way to Philadelphia.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2003.
