Ashtown railway station

Ashtown (Irish: Baile an Ásaigh) is a suburb of Dublin, Ireland. It is also a townland in the civil parish of Castleknock and falls largely into the postal districts of Dublin 15, with some addresses falling into the Dublin 7 postal district. Ashtown is bounded roughly by the townlands of Castleknock to the west. It is situated by the Royal Canal, near the Navan Road, which some addresses being named off Navan Road. The Phoenix Park is also nearby, its Ashtown Gate entrance about 500 metres south of the railway station. The townland's 278 acres are within Dublin City whereas Castleknock is in Fingal. The suburb had a population of 13,209 inhabitants as reported in the 2016 census.Teagasc has a food research centre at Ashtown.

Phoenix Park Racecourse is a former horse racing venue in Ireland. It was located in the townlands of Ashtown and Castleknock in the civil parish of Castleknock on the northern edge of the Phoenix Park in Dublin. The course was founded by JHH Peard, and racing began there in 1902.

Ashtown Castle (Irish: Caisleán Bhaile an Ásaigh) is a tower house in the Phoenix Park in Dublin, Ireland. It was found hidden within the walls of a much larger and more recent Georgian building, the Under Secretary's Lodge also known as Ashtown Lodge, that was being used by the Papal Nuncio until 1978. At that time, the Lodge was deemed structurally irreparable due to dry rot. However, as the building was being demolished, Ashtown Castle was discovered. It has now been restored and forms part of the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre.It is thought to originally date from the 1430s, as it is built to dimensions that conform with a government policy of the time that offered £10 to those who built a castle for their own safety. The castle was later incorporated into the construction of Ashtown Lodge which was to serve as the official residence of the Under Secretary from 1782.

The Under Secretary's Lodge was formerly the Dublin residence of the British Under-Secretary for Ireland (the British Administration's chief civil servant). After the creation of the Irish Free State in 1922, the office of Under Secretary disappeared. The residence was rented by the Irish Free State to the Vatican for use as the Apostolic Nunciature (papal embassy). The Lodge was vacated by the Papal Nuncio in the mid 1970s, when he moved to a new purpose-built nunciature on the Navan Road in Dublin. It was intended to turn the Lodge into a Taoiseach's residence (residence of the prime minister of Ireland). But after some years' delay it was decided that the Lodge (in a politically unappealing Georgian style) was in too poor a state of repair due to dry rot to be converted and so was demolished. A preservable medieval tower house was found to be at the centre of the demolished Georgian building. It has been restored, and as Ashtown Castle it is used as an interpretative centre. Tours of Áras an Uachtaráin (residence of the President of Ireland) begin from the centre every Saturday. While it served as the Apostolic Nunciature, one of its most famous residents was Giovanni Montini, later Pope Paul VI, who worked as a young diplomat there.

Bloom Festival is Ireland's largest gardening show. It is a large five-day event, held each year in Phoenix Park, Dublin. It was first held in 2007, and is organised by An Bord Bia (The Food Board). The 2020 event was cancelled owing to the measures taken to address the 2020 coronavirus pandemic.

St Oliver Plunkett/Eoghan Ruadh (Irish: Naomh Oilibhéar Pluincéad, Eoghan Ruadh ) is a Gaelic Athletic Association club situated on the Navan Road on the northside of Dublin, Ireland. St Oliver Plunkett Eoghan Ruadh senior football team are sponsored by Dublin Bus. Plunketts won the 2006 Dublin AFL Division 2 title and won the 2007 Dublin AFL Division 1 title. Plunketts currently compete in the Dublin Senior Hurling League Division 2 and Dublin Senior B, Division 2 Camogie League.

The Dunsink Observatory is an astronomical observatory established in 1785 in the townland of Dunsink near the city of Dublin, Ireland.Its most famous director was William Rowan Hamilton, who, amongst other things, discovered quaternions, the first non-commutative algebra, while walking from the observatory to the city with his wife. The annual Hamilton Walk that commemorates this discovery begins at the observatory. He is also renowned for his Hamiltonian formulation of dynamics. In the late 20th century, the city encroached ever more on the observatory, which compromised the seeing. The telescope, no longer state of the art, was used mainly for public 'open nights'. Dunsink observatory is currently part of the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies (DIAS). It provides accommodation for visiting scientists and is also used for conferences and public outreach events. Public talks on astronomy and astrophysics are given regularly at the observatory by professional and amateur astronomers. Stargazing events are also held using the Grubb telescope.

Dunsink (Irish: Dún Sinche, meaning 'fort of Sineach') is a townland in the civil parish of Castleknock, Dublin, in Ireland. The townland has an area of approximately 1.7 square kilometres (0.66 sq mi), and had a population of 323 people as of the 2011 census.The townland is the site of Dunsink Observatory, where William Rowan Hamilton and Hermann Brück were directors. Built in 1783–1785, it is the oldest scientific institution in Ireland. The observatory houses a 12-inch (30 cm) refracting telescope which was built by Grubbs of Dublin using a French manufactured lens. It is situated on a hill 8 km northwest of Dublin's city centre, where the astronomy section of the School of Cosmic Physics in the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies is located.The 1880 Definition of Time Act set the official time in Ireland to be Dublin Mean Time. This was computed as the time at Dunsink, which was about GMT-25m21. In 1916, another act moved Ireland to Greenwich Mean Time. Dunsink time is mentioned five times in James Joyce's novel, Ulysses.Formerly the location of "Dublin’s biggest landfill facility", Dunsink is also the site of a major unofficial Traveller encampment, the subject of considerable media coverage in 2007. By 2008, Fingal County Council had reportedly compensated those in the encampment to "vacate [the] land".

Pelletstown railway station is a railway station on the Western Commuter line in the Cabra area of Dublin, Ireland, beside the Royal Canal. The station was opened on 26 September 2021 by Minister for Transport Eamon Ryan and Tánaiste Leo Varadkar, becoming the first new station to open on the Iarnród Éireann network since Oranmore railway station opened in 2013.Planning permission was originally granted in 2014, with modified permission approved in 2018. In 2018, Iarnród Éireann stated that construction would begin in 2019, but the groundbreaking did not take place until February 2020. As of early 2020, the project was projected to cost €10-€10.5 million.The station is adjacent to the 8th Lock residential quarter development, owned by German investor Union Investment.The station takes its name from the townland of Pelletstown. This name traces back to the Middle Ages: Piletiston is recorded on the Close Roll of King Edward III c. 1375, the name meaning the tūn (settlement) of Ralph Pedelowe.

The Phoenix Park (Irish: Páirc an Fhionnuisce) is a large urban park in Dublin, Ireland, lying 2–4 kilometres (1.2–2.5 mi) west of the city centre, north of the River Liffey. Its 11 kilometres (6.8 mi) perimeter wall encloses 707 hectares (1,750 acres) of recreational space. It includes large areas of grassland and tree-lined avenues, and since the 17th century has been home to a herd of wild fallow deer. The Irish Government is lobbying UNESCO to have the park designated as a world heritage site.
