Germantown (Pennsylvania German: Deitscheschteddel) is an area in Northwest Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Founded by Palatine, Quaker, and Mennonite families in 1683 as an independent borough, it was absorbed into Philadelphia in 1854. The area, which is about six miles northwest from the city center, now consists of two neighborhoods: 'Germantown' and 'East Germantown'. Germantown has played a significant role in American history; it was the birthplace of the American antislavery movement, the site of a Revolutionary War battle, the temporary residence of George Washington, the location of the first bank of the United States, and the residence of many notable politicians, scholars, artists, and social activists. Today, the area remains rich in historic sites and buildings from the colonial era, some of which are open to the public.

The John Johnson House (also known as the Johnson House) is a National Historic Landmark in the Germantown section of Philadelphia, significant for its role in the antislavery movement and the Underground Railroad. It is located at 6306 Germantown Avenue and is a contributing property of the Colonial Germantown Historic District, which is also a National Historic Landmark. It is operated today as a museum open to the public.

The Upper Burial Ground is a cemetery in the Germantown section of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It is notable as the last resting place of 58 American soldiers from the Battle of Germantown in the American Revolution. Here also lies many of the founders of Germantown, including William Dewees, sheriff of Germantown's independent government. Also buried here is Zachariah Poulson, who died in 1844 after having published The American Daily Advertiser, Philadelphia's principal daily newspaper for many years. Another significant grave is that of Alexander Mack, the founder of the Schwarzenau Brethren (or German Baptist Brethren). Originally buried in Axe's Burial Ground in 1735, his remains were carefully removed in 1894 along with his field stone to the God's Acre in the rear of the Brethren church, where they now repose beside those of his son, Alexander, and family. One of the earliest stones is Cornelius Tyson who arrived in Germantown in 1684 and died in 1716 at age 63. It is adjacent to the Concord School House. The Upper Burial Ground is a contributing property of the Colonial Germantown Historic District, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Concord School House is a historic one-room schoolhouse in the Germantown section of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It is operated today as a museum. It is part of the Colonial Germantown Historic District which was named a National Historic Landmark District in 1965. Built in 1775 by Jacob Knorr (or Knor), Concord was the first English-language school in Germantown, which was then a separate town about six miles northwest of Philadelphia. It is built on the corner of the Upper Burial Ground at Washington Lane and Germantown Avenue. It opened to students in October 1775, and served as a school room until at least 1889.

The Mennonite Meetinghouse (Germantown Mennonite Church) is an historic, American Mennonite church building that is located at 6119 Germantown Avenue in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.

Cliveden ( or KLIV-dən), also known as the Chew House, is a historic site owned by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, located in the Germantown neighborhood of Northwest Philadelphia. Built as a country house for attorney Benjamin Chew, Cliveden was completed in 1767 and was home to seven generations of the Chew family. Cliveden has long been famous as the site of the American Revolutionary War's Battle of Germantown in 1777 as well as for its Georgian architecture. New research is unearthing a more complicated history at Cliveden, which involves layers of significance, including the lives of those who were enslaved and in service to the Chew family. That information broadens the meaning of Cliveden as a preserved historic place, exploring themes and stories of American identity and freedom. Traces of the history of the Cliveden property and its occupants can be found throughout the 5-acre (2.0 ha) woody landscape. The Cliveden grounds are open for the community to enjoy as a public park from Monday to Friday, 9 am to 5 pm, weather permitting. The property includes four buildings, the Main House, Kitchen Dependency, Wash House and Carriage House. Tours of Cliveden are available May through November, from Thursday to Sunday, 12 pm to 4 pm.

The Tulpehocken Station Historic District is a historic area in the Germantown neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Large suburban houses were built in the area from about 1850 to 1900 in a variety of styles including Carpenter Gothic, Italianate, and Bracketed as part of the Picturesque Movement of architecture. In the 1870s styles moved toward High Victorian and Second Empire. The district was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985, and it covers about six square blocks, bounded by McCallum Street on the north, the Pennsylvania Railroad tracks on the south, Tulpehocken Street on the west, and Walnut Lane on the east. Thirty-seven buildings in the district are considered to be significant and 118 are considered to be contributing, with only 13 considered to be intrusions.

The Presser Home for Retired Music Teachers, also known as Mt. Airy Commons, is an historic, American retirement home that is located in the Mount Airy neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2006.

The Reformed Episcopal Church of the Atonement is a historic church in the Germantown neighborhood of Philadelphia. It is a parish of the Reformed Episcopal Church's Diocese of the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic and a contributing property to the Tulpehocken Station Historic District.While the current building dates to 1929, the church was founded in 1875 as the Third Reformed Episcopal Church. It took its current name by 1894.

Germantown High School was a secondary school located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Germantown High School graduated its final class on June 19, 2013 and closed its doors that week.GHS, located in Germantown, was a part of the School District of Philadelphia. The school was built in 1914. Its students were mostly African-American, despite the previous German population of the region. Students came from the Logan, Germantown, Mt. Airy, Chestnut Hill, and Nicetown-Tioga sections of the city.The team name was the Bears.1993-94 and 95 Men's Varsity basketball was ranked top in the city of Philadelphia.
