Stony Point Battlefield

The Battle of Stony Point took place on July 16, 1779, during the American Revolutionary War. In a well-planned and -executed nighttime attack, a highly trained select group of George Washington's Continental Army troops under the command of Brigadier General "Mad Anthony" Wayne defeated British troops in a quick and daring assault on their outpost in Stony Point, New York, approximately 30 mi (48 km) north of New York City. The British suffered heavy losses in a battle that served as an important victory in terms of morale for the Continental Army. While the fort was ordered evacuated quickly after the battle by General Washington, this key crossing site was used later in the war by units of the Continental Army to cross the Hudson River on their way to victory over the British.

The Stony Point Light is the oldest lighthouse on the Hudson River. It is located at the Stony Point Battlefield in Stony Point, New York.The lighthouse was built in 1826 by Thomas Phillips, to warn ships away from the rocks of the Stony Point peninsula. The completion of the Erie Canal the previous year, which linked New York City to America's heartland, increased traffic on the Hudson River dramatically, and the need for navigational aids was paramount. Its design is an octagonal pyramid, made entirely of stone. In service for nearly 100 years, the lighthouse had a series of keepers, most notably the Rose family. The Rose home is also on the Historic Register. The lighthouse was decommissioned in 1925 and was acquired by the parks commission in 1941. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.Through the efforts of the Stony Point Battlefield State Historic Site, the Palisades Park Interstate Commission, and NYS Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation, restoration of the lighthouse began in 1986. The exterior was repaired and painted and the lantern was reglazed. On October 7, 1995, restoration was complete, and the light was activated for the first time in 70 years. Peekskill Seaplane Base (FAA LID: 7N2) was a public use seaplane base located three nautical miles (5.5 km) southwest of the central business district of Peekskill, a city in Westchester County, New York, United States. It was privately owned by James M. W. Martin. The seaplane base was situated on the Hudson River in Verplanck, a hamlet in the Town of Cortlandt. Also located at this site is the Riveredge Trailer Park, founded and operated by James Martin since 1950. In 1991 he donated the seaplane base, trailer park and waterfront area to the Town of Cortlandt. The 26 acres (110,000 m2) of land was given with an agreement that the trailer park would remain open until 10 years after his death, at which time the town will turn it into a park. Martin had been offered $5.5 million by a developer looking to build condominiums on the property. Martin died on July 3, 2006 in his Greenwich, Connecticut home at the age of 87. The seaplane base was removed from FAA records in 2007.

The William H. Rose House is located on Tomkins Avenue in Stony Point, New York, United States. It is an ornate Carpenter Gothic-style house from the mid-19th century, with similar outbuildings, built for a wealthy local businessman. In order to preserve it during the construction of a nearby senior citizens' home during the late 20th century, it was moved from its original site a short distance away and rotated. In 1999 it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Collaberg School (originally known as the Barker School) founded in 1961 was the first 'free school' in the United States based on the model of the Summerhill School in England. The school was located in Stony Point, 30 miles (48 km) from New York City. Collaberg School enrolled between 25 and 50 students from kindergarten through high school in its experimental curriculum. The school closed in 1970 but during its short lifespan was a touchpoint for many of the notable figures of the burst of creative energy that was the 1960s.

Verplanck is a hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) in the town of Cortlandt, Westchester County, New York, United States. As of the 2010 census it had a population of 1,729. Both the hamlet and Verplanck's Point derive their name from the activities of the Verplanck family, established in New Amsterdam by Abraham Isaacsen Verplanck in the 1630s.

John D. McKean is a fireboat that served the New York City Fire Department as Marine Company 1. She is named after John D. Mckean, who died in a 1953 steam explosion while trying to save a predecessor fireboat, the George B. McClellan.

Mott Farm Road extends west from US 9W to Bulsontown Road. A natural gas pipeline runs from the Hudson River into Stony Point. Much of the Tomkins Cove perimeter borders Bear Mountain State Park. Tomkins Cove prides itself on having a cut through of the Appalachian trail which leads into Bear Mountain. It is one of the more rural communities in Rockland County. Tomkins Cove is accessible from Exit 15 on the Palisades Interstate Parkway.

Grassy Point (formerly known as North Haverstraw), was a hamlet on the west side of the Hudson River, in the Town of Stony Point in Rockland County, New York, United States. It was located north of West Haverstraw; east of Harriman State Park; south of Stony Point.

Penguin Rep, dubbed "the gutsiest little theatre" by the New York Times, was founded by Joe Brancato, artistic director, with the aim of adding a new kind of theatre to the local cultural landscape: a professional enterprise dedicated to promoting new voices and works which enrich the body of American drama; nurturing and developing new talent for the stage; and reaching new audiences for theatre. Under the leadership of Mr. Brancato, cited by The New York Times as "one of America's insightful young directors", and Executive Director Andrew M. Horn, the company has attracted more than 150,000 audience members from the lower Hudson Valley and beyond to its intimate 108-seat theatre. Penguin Rep has presented more than 100 critically and popularly acclaimed productions, including premieres by such playwrights as Warren Leight (author of Side Man), Arthur Laurents (West Side Story), Elizabeth Swados (Runaways), William Mastrosimone (Extremities), and Ronald Harwood (Taking Sides).

Stony Point Center is one of three conference centers of the Presbyterian Church (USA). The other two conference and retreat centers are Ghost Ranch and Montreat. Stony Point Center welcomes people of all faiths and nations to discern, discover, learn, and lead. The facility began about 150 years ago as a ministry of hospitality shaped by four daughters of a Presbyterian minister. In a given year, the center with its 180-bed campus welcomes a wide variety of groups who come to hold their own programs/retreats. Stony Point Center sponsors programming focused on nonviolence, peace and justice, environment, spiritual practices, and church issues. Since 2009, it has been the spiritual home of the Community of Living Traditions. Stony Point Center is a Ministry of the Presbyterian Church (USA). In 2000, Stony Point Center established the "John Garcia Gensel Award for Integrating Faith and the Arts"; the first award was given that year to Dave Brubeck.
