The board was originally known as Simcoe Muskoka Roman Catholic Separate School Board (SMRCSSB) and operated anglophone and francophone schools.

It was established in 1957 as part of the Simcoe County District School Board in southern Ontario. The principal is Kimberlee Hand. Barrie North CI has a catchment area of north Barrie, and a large rural portion of Springwater Township (villages of Midhurst & Minesing).
