Aille River (County Mayo)

Pollatoomary is the deepest explored underwater cave in Ireland. It has been explored to an underwater depth of 113 metres (371 ft). The explored limit of Pollatoomary is also 23 metres (75 ft) deeper underwater than that of the terminal sump in Wookey Hole Caves in Somerset, England, which previously held the record for the deepest underwater cave in Britain and Ireland.

Killawalla or Killavally (Irish: Coill an Bhaile, meaning 'wood of the homestead') is a village located in County Mayo, Ireland, seven miles (10 km) from Westport on the R330 road to Ballinrobe. Saint Patrick is alleged to have passed this way en route to Croagh Patrick, and accordingly the local Catholic church is named after him. The village also contains a primary school and MacEvilly's pub established in 1968. The village post office closed in 2017. Killawalla is part of the parish of Carnacon and Ballintubber. Research carried out by NUI Maynooth showed Killawalla to have sustained the biggest population loss of any village in Ireland during the Great Famine. Between 1841 and 1851, the village lost two thirds of its population. The 1916 rising participant and sport administrator Seán O'Duffy who was heavily involved in the development of camogie in Ireland for 40 years, was born in the old barracks in Killawalla in 1886 according to a plaque erected on the wall of the school. This RIC barracks located in Kinury was one of those closed in the wake of the Tourmakeady ambush during the Irish War of Independence in May of 1921. Killawalla is also home to Pollatoomary cave, the deepest explored underwater cave in Britain and Ireland. The cave has been explored to a depth of 113 m in June 2018 by Michal Marek. This dive surpassed the previous record of 108 m also set here by Artur Kozłowski in 2008. The entrance to the cave is located in the townland of Ballyburke on private land.

Carra (Irish: Ceara) is one of the nine baronies of County Mayo in Ireland, located in the mid-south area of the county. It is sometimes known as Burriscarra. It incorporates the town of Castlebar, the villages of Tourmakeady, Belcarra and Turlough, where the National Museum of Country Life is situated. Cara covers an area from approximately Pontoon and Beltra Lough at its northern end to Partry (Ballyovey) near Ballinrobe and Tourmakeady at its southern end.

Claggarnagh East (Irish: Clogarnach Thoir) is a townland in the parish & village of Islandeady and the historical barony of Burrishoole, County Mayo. It borders the nearby townlands of Claggarnagh West, Cloonkeen, Annagh. The townland's population has 73 people in 23 occupied dwellings.

Islandeady Lough (Irish: Loch Oileán Éadaí) is a freshwater lake in the west of Ireland. It is located in County Mayo.

Islandeady (Irish: Oileán Éadaí) is a village in County Mayo, Ireland, about halfway between the towns of Castlebar and Westport. The parish of Islandeady meets Castlebar to the east, Westport and Newport to the west, and Aughagower and Killawalla to the south. There is a view of Croagh Patrick to the west and Nephin to the northeast. The main route by road is the N5. The parish has four national schools and a private secondary school.

Cloondacon or Cloondachon (Irish: Cluain Dá Chon, meaning 'Meadow of the two hounds') is a townland in the Parish of Aughagower and Barony of Burrishoole in County Mayo. It is bordered to the northeast by Mace South, to the south by Tevinish East, to the southwest by Aughagower, to the west by Gorteen, and to the northwest by the Deerpark.Cloondacon is situated on Tochar Phádraig, the ancient route from Ballintubber Abbey through Aughagower to Croagh Patrick.The name Cluain Dá Chon refers to an ancient legend according to which a pagan chieftain set two wolfhounds on Saint Patrick. Instead of attacking Patrick, the hounds licked his hands. The chieftain was moved by this and became a Christian. According to an alternative version, St. Patrick made the sign of the cross over them, and the two hounds were swallowed up in an oval shaped hole called Poll na gCon (the hole of the hounds).

Ballymacrah (Irish: Baile Mhic Craith, meaning 'town[land] of Mac Craith') is a townland in the electoral division of Castlebar Rural and the barony of Carra, County Mayo. The townland is southwest of Castlebar and borders Ballynaboll South, Cloondeash, Derrinlevaun & Knockaphunta to the east, Derrycoosh to the south, Pheasanthill to the west and Ballynaboll North to the north. The townland, which is approximately 1.6 square kilometres (0.6 sq mi) in area, had a population of 58 people in 24 occupied dwellings in 2011.

Knockroosky (Irish: Cnoc Rúscaí, meaning 'Hill of the marshy ground') is a townland in the parish of Aughagower and barony of Burrishoole, County Mayo. It is bordered to the west by Ballinvoy, to the northwest by Meneen, to the north by Dooncastle and Cushinkeel, to the northeast by Cushinsheeaun, to the east by Mace North and Mace South, and to the southwest by the Deerpark. All of these are in the parish of Aughagower. The R330 road runs through Knockroosky. The national school for the parish Aughagower is situated to the north of this road.

There is little remaining of Doon Castle (Irish: Caisleán an Dúin, meaning 'Fort Castle'), situated on a hill in the townland of the same name, in the parish of Aughagower approximately four miles from Westport in County Mayo. In 1133, Cormac MacCarthy and Conor O'Brien invaded Connaught and plundered much of the country, destroying Dún Mughdhord (Doon Castle) and Dunmore.The Norman Castle of Doon appears to have been built on the site of the old Irish Dún Mughdhord. The castle has almost disappeared. The castle is in the townland of Dooncastle. According to local accounts, the stones of the castle were used by Lord Sligo in the building of Westport House. The castle is on a hill 150 feet in height and gave excellent views to the northeast to Islandeady and Aille, where the other McPhilpin castles were. The space on the hill is in the shape of an ellipse 40-60 yards x 20 yards. The castle was rectangular and measured about 40 feet x 27 feet. The space between the main castle and the outer fortifications was not great.According to Knox, the MacPhilbins held the castles of Ayle and Aghle and Doon in the Barony of Burrishoole and Bellabourke and the New Castle near Castlebar in the Barony of Carra.

Dooncastle (Irish: Caisleán an Dúin, meaning 'Fort Castle') is a townland in the Parish of Aughagower and Barony of Burrishoole in Ireland. It is bordered to the west by the townland of Derrygorman in the Parish of Westport. To the north it is bordered by the townland of Sheean in the Parish of Islandeady. It is bordered by the following townlands in the Parish of Aughagower: to the southwest, Meneen; to the south, Knockroosky; to the east, Cushinkeel; and to the northeast, Doon.In this townland are the remnants of Doon Castle, a former stronghold of the McPhilpin clan. The railway line between Westport and Manulla Junction passes through the southern part of the townland, the N5 road through its northern part.

Aughagower or Aghagower (Irish: Achadh Ghobhair, meaning 'field of the spring') is a small village in rural County Mayo in western Ireland. It is located about 6 km from Westport. Aughagower has around 40 houses, 1 pub and a shop, with a clear view of Croagh Patrick from Reek View. It also forms the centre of a parish of the same name which covers an area of 86.1 square miles. The village is known for its links to Saint Patrick and Tóchar Phádraig, the pilgrimage route from Ballintubber Abbey to Croagh Patrick.
