Saint John's Tower (Castledermot)

Castledermot (Irish: Díseart Diarmada, meaning 'Dermot's Hermitage') is an inland town in the south-east of Ireland in County Kildare, about 75 km (47 mi) from Dublin, and 10 km (6.2 mi) from the town of Carlow. The N9 road from Dublin to Waterford previously passed through the village but upon completion of a motorway bypass in 2010, it was re-designated the R448. The town is in a townland and civil parish of the same name.

Coláiste Lorcáin is a secondary school located in the town of Castledermot, County Kildare, in Republic of Ireland. The school was established in July 1982 as a result of an amalgamation between the Vocational School, Castledermot and St. Mary's Secondary School. The school is dedicated to St. Laurence O'Toole, the patron saint of the Arch Diocese of Dublin, who was born in the parish of Castledermot around the year 1123. The school is under the direction of a Board of Management which includes representatives of the Sisters - The Poor Servants of the Mother of God, Kildare Vocational Education Committee, the parents and teachers of the school. Castledermot is situated on the main Dublin - Waterford road approximately ten km north of Carlow town. The Coláiste Lorcain Junior Rugby team won the Leinster Junior Development Cup in 2009.

Castledermot Round Tower is a 10th-century round tower in Castledermot, County Kildare, Ireland. The tower, and the high crosses nearby, are a National Monument.

Castledermot Abbey (Irish: Mainistir Dhíseart Diarmada) is a ruined Franciscan friary in Castledermot, County Kildare, Ireland. It was founded at some point before 1247. A previous monastery had been founded on the same site by Diarmait, a son of Áed Róin, King of Ulster, in the ninth century AD.

Castledermot GAA is a Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) club in Castledermot, County Kildare, Ireland. The club has won 6 7 Kildare Senior Hurling Championships and teams representing the club were the first winners of the Intermediate Football Championship and Senior Camogie Championship. The club, which was named "Kildare club of the year" in 2004, is the home club of All-Ireland football finalist of 1935, mark kane, who played for the club 1925–1942. mark kane was goalkeeper on the Kildare hurling team of the millennium.

Palatine (Irish: Na Cnoic Arda) is a village in County Carlow, Ireland. It lies mostly within the townlands of Knockarda and Killyshane, close to the County Kildare border. Its unusual English name bears no relation to its original Irish name, Na Cnoic Arda, which roughly translates as 'high hills'. "Palatinetown" is mentioned in A Topographical Dictionary of Ireland by Samuel Lewis, 1837: PALATINETOWN, a hamlet, in the parish of URGLIN, barony and county of CARLOW, and province of LEINSTER, 23⁄4 miles (N. E.) from Carlow, on the road to Castledermot; containing 88 inhabitants. It is said to derive its name from a colony of German refugees, who were driven from their native country, and settled here, in the reign of Louis XIV. The Rt. Hon. B. Burton obtained a patent for four fairs, of which that on the 26th of March is the only one at present held. A constabulary police force is stationed in the village.

Kilkea Castle is located 5 km (3.1 mi) northwest of Castledermot, County Kildare, Ireland near the village of Kilkea on the R418 regional road from Athy to Tullow. It was a medieval stronghold, for over 700 years, of the Fitzgeralds, earls of Kildare.

The Battle of Ballaghmoon (Irish: Cath Bealaigh Mughna) took place on 13 September 908 at Ballaghmoon, near Castledermot in the south of modern County Kildare. It pitted the forces of Cormac mac Cuilennáin, king of Munster against an alliance comprising the forces of Flann Sinna, High King of Ireland, Cerball mac Muirecáin, king of Leinster, Cathal mac Conchobair, king of Connacht, and Cellach mac Cerbaill, king of Osraige. It ended in a decisive victory for the alliance led by Flann Sinna. The Conflict arose after Cormac mac Cuilennáin assembled an army to campaign against his eastern neighbour, Leinster, whose king Cerball mac Muirecáin was Flann Sinna's son-in-law and staunch ally. After this hostile act Flann in an alliance with Cathal mac Conchobair, king of Connacht, led an army into Leinster in order to help his son-in-law. Despite the men of Munster being outnumbered and peace talks being held between both sides, Cormac refused to surrender, it ultimately proved to be his undoing, he and Cellach mac Cerbaill were killed during the course of the battle.

Duckett's Grove (Irish: Garrán Duckett) is a ruined 19th-century great house and former estate in County Carlow, Ireland. Belonging to the Duckett family, the house was formerly the focal point of a 12,000-acre (49 km2) estate, and dominated the local landscape of the area for more than two centuries. The interior of the house was destroyed by a major fire in the 1930s and is now inaccessible. The surrounding gardens, including two inter-connecting walled gardens, are now managed by Carlow County Council and open as a public park.

Kilkea (Irish: Cill Chá) is a village and civil parish in County Kildare, Ireland, about 75 km (47 mi) from Dublin, and 15 km (9.3 mi) from the town of Carlow. The R418 regional road from Athy to Tullow passes through the village.

Brownshill Dolmen (Irish: Dolmain Chnoc an Bhrúnaigh) is a very large megalithic portal tomb situated 3 km east of Carlow, in County Carlow, Ireland. Its capstone weighs an estimated 150 metric tons, and is reputed to be the heaviest in Europe. This dolmen has three large uprights and two recumbent stones at the other end. The tomb is listed as a National Monument. Known as the Kernanstown Cromlech, sometimes spelled as Browneshill Dolmen, it is sited on the former estate house of the Browne family from which it takes its name. It lies just off the R726 road regional road and is clearly visible from the road. The tomb was built between 4000 and 3000 BC. It is distinguished for the flanking of its burial chamber with two large upright stones (orthostats) supporting the granite capstone (roof) of the chamber. The capstone is thought to have been covered by an earthen mound and a gate stone blocked the entrance. At Brownshill both portal stones and the gate-stone are still in situ; the capstone lies on top of the portals and gate-stone and slopes to the ground away from the entrance. The dolmen has not been excavated. A nearby fourth upright stone stands close by and might be the remains of a forecourt.
