Longkesh

Mazetown or Maze (possibly from Irish an Mhias 'the basin', otherwise known as an Mhaigh meaning "the plain") is a small village in County Down, Northern Ireland. It was named after the townland of Maze. The village and townland sit on the southern bank of the River Lagan, which separates it from Lurganure. This river is also the boundary between County Down and County Antrim. It is within the Lisburn City Council area, and the Maze electoral ward. In the 2001 Census, there were 363 residents.

Maze is an electoral ward (and a townland) in the Lisburn and Castlereagh City Council (formerly Lisburn City Council) area of Northern Ireland. It predominantly lies in County Down although its northwestern corner lies in County Antrim, the division being the River Lagan. The Maze electoral ward consists of the settlements of Mazetown, Long Kesh, Culcavy, Aghnatrisk, Halftown and Ravernet. In 2001, there were 3393 residents in the electoral ward.

Down Royal Racecourse is a horse racing venue near Lisburn in Northern Ireland. The most valuable race run there is the Ladbrokes Champion Chase, run at the Northern Ireland Festival of racing in November. The most valuable flat race to be run there annually is the Ulster Derby. Racing has been taking place on the current course, at Maze near Lisburn, since, the early 18th Century on land donated by Arthur Hill, 1st Marquess of Downshire, but the history of Down Royal goes further back to 1685 when King James II issued a Royal Charter and formed the Down Royal Corporation of Horse Breeders. In 1750 King George II donated £100 to run King's Plate and to the present day a race named Her Majestys Plate is run in July over 1 mile 5 furlongs with the prize money contributed to by the Privy Purse. Although actually in the United Kingdom, racing at Down Royal comes under the authority of Horse Racing Ireland as horse-racing in the British Isles is divided on a Great Britain / All-Ireland basis. In October 2018 a dispute arose between the owners, Merrion Property Group, and the track operators, Down Royal Corporation of Horse Breeders. The Corporation announced that it would cease operations at the end of 2018 while Merrion, stated that they would run the course from 1 January 2019. Some reports suggested that the course would close. In January 2019 the operation of the course passed to Merrion Property Group.

Keshbridge (Irish: Droichead Ceis) is a small village in County Antrim, Northern Ireland. In the 2001 Census it had a population of 99 people. It is situated in the Lisburn City Council area. The Kesh House was built in the 19th century. Coal stores and weighbridges populate the town along an old coal canal.

Aghnatrisk (from Irish Achadh na Triosca 'field of the chaff or rough land') is a rural townland in County Down, Northern Ireland. It has an area of 252.03 acres (1.02 km2). It is situated in the civil parish of Blaris (Iveagh portion) and the historic barony of Iveagh Lower, Upper Half, located 4 miles south-west of Lisburn. It lies within the Lisburn and Castlereagh City Council.

Her Majesty's Prison Maze (previously Long Kesh Detention Centre, and known colloquially as The Maze or H-Blocks) was a prison in Northern Ireland that was used to house paramilitary prisoners during the Troubles from August 1971 to September 2000. It was situated at the former Royal Air Force station of Long Kesh, on the outskirts of Lisburn. This was in the townland of Maze, about nine miles (14 km) southwest of Belfast. The prison and its inmates were involved in such events as the 1981 hunger strike. The prison was closed in 2000 and demolition began on 30 October 2006, but on 18 April 2013 it was announced by the Northern Ireland Executive that the remaining buildings would be redeveloped into a peace centre.

The Maze Prison escape (known to Irish republicans as the Great Escape) took place on 25 September 1983 in County Antrim, Northern Ireland. HM Prison Maze (also known as Long Kesh) was a maximum security prison considered to be one of the most escape-proof prisons in Europe. It held prisoners suspected of taking part in armed paramilitary campaigns during the Troubles, with separate wings for loyalists and for republicans. In the biggest prison escape in UK history, 38 Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA) prisoners escaped from H-Block 7 (H7) of the prison. One prison officer died of a heart attack during the escape and twenty others were injured, including two who were shot with guns that had been smuggled into the prison. The escape was a propaganda coup for the IRA, and a British government minister faced calls to resign. The official inquiry into the escape placed most of the blame onto prison staff, who in turn blamed the escape on political interference in the running of the prison.

Annacloy (from Irish Áth na Cloiche 'ford of the stone') is a townland in County Down, Northern Ireland. It has an area of 192.06 acres (0.778 km2). It is situated in the civil parish of Blaris and the historic barony of Iveagh Lower, Upper Half, located 3 miles south-west of Lisburn. It lies within the Lisburn and Castlereagh City Council.

Lurganure (from Irish: Lurga an Iubhair, meaning 'long ridge of the yew') is a small village and townland in County Antrim, Northern Ireland. It lies to the west of Lisburn and is separated from Mazetown by the River Lagan. In the 2001 Census it had a population of 441 people. It is in the Lisburn City Council area.

Royal Air Force Long Kesh or more simply RAF Long Kesh is a former Royal Air Force station at Maze, Lisburn, Northern Ireland. Various aircraft operated from the airfield during the Second World War, including the Supermarine Seafire and Spitfire.

Balmoral Park is an exhibition park near Lisburn, Northern Ireland. It occupies the site of the previous Maze Long Kesh internment camp.Balmoral Park is now the home of the Balmoral Show, organized by the Royal Ulster Agricultural Society. As of April 2020, the Eikon Exhibition Centre, which is located in the park, is being considered as a location for one of the NHS COVID-19 critical care hospitals.It is also one of the two bases of Air Ambulance Northern Ireland.
