Portnashangan civil parish comprises 8 townlands: Ballynafid, Ballynagall Clanhugh Demesne, Loughanstown, Mountmurray, Piercefield, Portnashangan and Rathlevanagh. Of these, Mountmurray and Piercefield lie west of Lough Owel, the others to the east of the lake. The two parts of the parish have no land connection and are separated by the area of Leny parish. About half of the eastern boundary of the townland includes a strip of Scragh Bog approximately 50m wide. Multyfarnham GAA is a Gaelic Athletic Association club based in the village of Multyfarnham in the north of County Westmeath. They compete in the Westmeath Intermediate Football Championship. They are most recently winners of the Westmeath Junior Championship in 2022. They won the 2017 Westmeath Junior Championship, and subsequently won the 2017 Leinster Junior Club Football Championship before being runners-up in the 2018 All-Ireland Junior Club Football Championship, losing the final to Knocknagree of Cork. They are the only team from Westmeath to reach this stage. The club have an extensive underage setup, fielding boys and girls teams all the way up to the minor (under 18) level.

Multyfarnham or Multyfarnam (Irish: Muilte Farannáin, meaning 'Farannán's mills') is a village in County Westmeath, Ireland.

Lough Owel (Irish: Loch Uail) is a mesotrophic lough in the Midlands of Ireland, situated north of Mullingar, the county town of Westmeath. It has a maximum depth of 21 metres (69 ft). Water from Lough Owel feeds the Royal Canal, a canal crossing Ireland from Dublin to the River Shannon. The lake is close to the N4 primary road.
