Brawny (barony)

St. Marys is a civil parish in County Westmeath, Ireland. It is located about 38.96 kilometres (24 mi) west–south–west of Mullingar. St. Mary's is the sole civil parish in the barony of Brawny in the Province of Leinster. The civil parish covers 12,069.4 acres (48.843 km2). The Athlone Institute of Technology (AIT; Irish: Institiúid Teicneolaíochta Bhaile Átha Luain) was an institute of technology, located in Athlone, Ireland. Established in 1970, the institute's campus was located on University Road. A consortium between itself and the Limerick Institute of Technology was announced with the intention of forming a technological university. On 23 November 2020, the AIT-LIT Consortium announced that the joint Limerick-Athlone IT application for technological university (TU) status had been submitted for approval, which was granted in May 2021. On 16 July 2021, the institute of technology was officially dissolved and succeeded by the Technological University of the Shannon: Midlands Midwest, which began operations on 1 October 2021.

Athlone Town Stadium, often referred to as Lissywollen (Irish: Lios Uí Mhulláin) is the home stadium of Athlone Town. It has a seating capacity of 2,024 and an overall capacity of 5,000. The stadium was built in 2007, replacing St Mel's Park as the home of the club. In November 2011, it was reported that Athlone Town had received a donation of €500,000 to wipe out debts incurred through the construction of the stadium. In 2018, a dispute over ownership of Athlone Town Stadium arose between the club and local businessman Declan Molloy. The club received grant funding to install artificial turf ahead of the 2019 Season.

Cornamaddy is a townland in Athlone, County Westmeath, Ireland. The townland is in the civil parish of St. Mary's. The townland is in the northeast of the town. The N55 motorway enters the townland as it meets Athlone from the north.

Garrycastle is a Gaelic football club from the town of Athlone in County Westmeath, Republic of Ireland. The club was founded in 1981 after GAA fans in the area saw the need for a second club in Athlone to cater for the growing population of the town. They won their first Westmeath senior football championship in 2001, and their first Leinster club football title in 2011 after a last-minute free from second-half substitute Conor Cosgrove. They are the first and only Westmeath club to win the title. In 2004, Dessie Dolan was the first player from the club to be awarded an All Star. Dessie received an award for Westmeath footballer of the year for 2015 after his Man of the Match performance against Meath in the Leinster Championship. On 17 March 2012, they played in their first All-Ireland Senior Club Football Championship final against Crossmaglen Rangers at Croke Park. The match finished in a draw on a 1-12 to 0-15 scoreline. Crossmaglen went on to win the replay to claim their sixth title. They were last Westmeath senior football champions in 2019, beating St Loman’s 2-13 to 3-06 on 13 October.

Athlone GAA is the Gaelic football club in the town of Athlone in County Westmeath, Republic of Ireland. The local hurling club is called Southern Gaels. Athlone is Westmeath GAA's most successful football club.

Ankers Bower (also Anker's Bower, Ankers' Bower, Ankersbower, or Anchor's Bower) is a townland and hill in St. Mary's civil parish in the barony of Brawny, County Westmeath, Ireland. It is partly within the former urban district of Athlone. The name may derive from John Ankers, who was vicar of St. Mary's in 1608.

Dubarry Park is a rugby union stadium in Cornamangh townland, near the Coosan area of Athlone, County Westmeath, Republic of Ireland. It is the home ground of Buccaneers RFC and has a capacity of 10,000 spectators. Between 2005 and 2015, it hosted Ireland's home matches in the Six Nations Under 20s Championship.
