Villanueva de la Cañada is a municipality in the Community of Madrid, Spain. Located 30 km north-west from Madrid, the municipality covers an area of 34.92 km2. Geographically, it sits on a large plain, in which there are several promontories, on one of which is found the castle of Aulencia, its main landmark. The ESA's European Space Astronomy Centre lies close to the former, on the Guadarrama riverfront. Villafranca del Castillo, a well-off urban area detached from the main nucleus, is located within the municipal bounds. Villanueva de la Cañada hosts the main campus of the Alfonso X El Sabio University as well as the Aquópolis waterpark.

The Lycée Français International Molière de Madrid (Spanish: Liceo Francés Internacional Molière de Madrid), formerly Lycée Français Molière de Villanueva de la Cañada (Spanish: Liceo Francés Molière de Villanueva de la Cañada) is a French international school in Villanueva de la Cañada, Community of Madrid, Spain. It is governed by the rules of foreign system schools ("centros docentes extranjeros" ) in Spain, and French national Education. The school belongs to the Mission laïque française (MLF) and all levels are accredited ("homologués") by the Agency for French Education Abroad (AEFE), from petite section (2-3 yo) to terminale (final year of lycée, or senior high/sixth form). The Battle of Brunete (6–25 July 1937), fought 24 kilometres (15 mi) west of Madrid, was a Republican attempt to alleviate the pressure exerted by the Nationalists on the capital and on the north during the Spanish Civil War. Although initially successful, the Republicans were forced to retreat from Brunete after Nationalist counterattacks, and suffered devastating casualties from the battle.

The Second Battle of the Corunna Road (Spanish: Batalla de la Carretera de Coruña) was a battle of the Spanish Civil War that took place from 13 December 1936 to 15 January 1937, northwest of Madrid. In December 1936, the Nationalists launched an offensive in order to cut the Corunna Road and isolate Madrid, but a Republican counter-offensive stopped the Nationalist advance. The Nationalists cut the Corunna road but failed to encircle Madrid.
