UAB Hospital

Children's of Alabama is a pediatric acute care children's hospital located in Birmingham, Alabama. The main hospital has 332 beds and 48 bassinets. The hospital is affiliated with the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine. The hospital provides comprehensive pediatric specialties and subspecialties to pediatric patients aged 0–21 throughout Alabama and surrounding states. Children's of Alabama features the only level 1 pediatric trauma center in the state. The hospital was founded in 1911. The system's main hospital is located on the city's Southside, with additional outpatient facilities and primary care centers throughout central Alabama. It is the third largest children's hospital in the United States in terms of square footage.The hospital is nationally ranked in multiple pediatric specialties.

The University of Alabama School of Dentistry is the public dental school located at the University of Alabama in Birmingham, Alabama, United States. The dental school was founded in 1948 and is the only dental school in Alabama.

The Kirklin Clinic is the primary adult outpatient clinic of the medical staff of UAB Hospital, and of the faculty of the University of Alabama School of Medicine. Kirklin Clinic also is the site for many clinical rotations in the medical school's doctoral and residency programs. It was named for the School of Medicine's pioneering cardiac surgeon John W. Kirklin, who was noted for bringing the heart-lung machine into practical use in heart surgery. It was designed by the noted architect, I. M. Pei. Opened in July 1992, the Clinic is owned and operated by the nonprofit University of Alabama Health Services Foundation. It is located at 2000 6th Avenue South in Birmingham. During 2016 and 2017, the Kirklin Clinic underwent a $10 million project to expand its clinical space by 64,000 sq ft.

The Liberty National Life Complex, is a corporate office complex located in downtown Birmingham, Alabama. The complex is made up of two connecting buildings. The original building was built in 1925 and contains 10 stories. The second building, a 16-story building, was originally built in 1952 as a 10-story building, but was expanded in 1971 by six stories. The complex served as the corporate headquarters of Torchmark Corporation and its predecessor company, Liberty National Life, from 1925 until 2006.

Cooper Green Mercy Health Services is owned by Jefferson County, Alabama. It first opened as Mercy Hospital in 1972 as a 319-bed acute care facility and was renamed for former Birmingham mayor Cooper Green three years later. It is located at 1515 6th Avenue South, adjacent to UAB Hospital on Birmingham's Southside. After four decades, the hospital closed its inpatient beds on December 31, 2012, and transitioned to a multi-specialty outpatient health service organization. The health service organization offers both primary and specialty care, behavioral health, and urgent care. In addition, it offers an onsite pharmacy, radiology, and clinical laboratory, as well as OT, PT, Speech and Respiratory Therapy. Consistent with its mission, the health service organization continues to offer healthcare to the citizens of Jefferson County regardless of their ability to pay. Funding for indigent care was established by the Alabama Legislature in 1965, using revenues collected from county sales and liquor taxes. As a county-owned health service organization, Cooper Green Mercy provides healthcare services to all Jefferson County residents with fees based on family size and income. The health service organization coordinates with the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Health System, one of the nation's leading academic medical centers, as a training site for medical residents and to provide patients with diagnostic tests and procedures not provided onsite. In addition, many of the specialty clinics are staffed by UAB faculty who practice part-time at the facility. Through this partnership, Cooper Green Mercy Health Services' patients, most of whom are low income or economically-challenged, are able to receive not just comprehensive healthcare services, but world class healthcare. From October 2005 to March 2008 the physical plant underwent a $28 million program of extensive renovations and modernization of systems. Brasfield & Gorrie was general contractor for the project. In May 2009, Birmingham mayor Larry Langford suggested that the city of Birmingham take over operation of the hospital, predicting that the county would try to shut it down amid cost-cutting measures in the wake of a massive County debt crisis. Indeed, Jefferson County, Alabama, did file for voluntary relief under Chapter 9 of the United States Bankruptcy Code on November 9, 2011. His concerns proved unfounded, however. While the County Commission did vote 3 to 2 on August 28, 2012, to close the inpatient portion of the facility that it contended had been subsidized for years from the County's General Fund, Cooper Green Mercy Health Services continues to provide comprehensive outpatient care to the County's most vulnerable citizens. Mercy Hospital served as a symbol of a long and hard-fought battle for healthcare equality and racial dignity in Jefferson County, Alabama. The efforts of so many who went before have not been forgotten. Cooper Green Mercy Health Services continues this legacy into the 21st century.

The Daniel Building is a 20-story, 238 foot (86 m) office building located in downtown Birmingham, Alabama. Built in 1970, the building originally served as a regional office for the engineering and construction company Daniel International. It also served as the corporate headquarters for Daniel International's real estate division, Daniel Realty, which today is known as Daniel Corporation. In 1993, Compass Bancshares bought the building from Daniel Corporation. After completing an extensive renovation, Compass moved its corporate headquarters into the building from its old headquarters, which had been sold to UAB for expanded administrative offices. The building continues to serve as corporate office space for PNC Financial Services. It is the tallest building in downtown Birmingham outside of the Central Business District. On July 5, 2010, a two-alarm electrical fire broke out in the basement of the Daniel Building. There was severe damage to the basement, with water damage to the first floor and smoke damage extending several floors into the building. Employees were relocated to other facilities while the building was repaired.

The Automotive Historic District in Birmingham, Alabama, is a 42-acre (17 ha) historic district roughly bounded by First Avenue North, 24th Street South, Fifth Avenue South, and 20th Street South. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1991. At the time of listing, the district included 119 contributing buildings (and 17 non-contributing ones) and four contributing structures (and 16 non-contributing ones).The district covers a second area of commercial development south of the downtown area of Birmingham.

The Third Presbyterian Church of Birmingham, Alabama is a Presbyterian church located on the city's Southside at 617 22nd Street South, at the corner of 7th Avenue South. It is a member congregation of the Presbyterian Church in America.

The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) is a public research university in Birmingham, Alabama. Developed from an academic extension center established in 1936, the institution became a four-year campus in 1966 and a fully autonomous university in the University of Alabama System in 1969. UAB offers 140 programs of study in 12 academic divisions leading to bachelor's, master's, doctoral, and professional degrees in the social and behavioral sciences, the liberal arts, business, education, engineering, and health-related fields such as medicine, dentistry, optometry, nursing, and public health. In the fall of 2019, 22,080 students from more than 110 countries were enrolled.The UAB Health System, one of the largest academic medical centers in the United States, is affiliated with the university. UAB Hospital sponsors residency programs in medical specialties, including internal medicine, neurology, physical medicine and rehabilitation, surgery, radiology, and anesthesiology. UAB is the state's largest single employer, with more than 23,000 faculty and staff and over 53,000 jobs at the university and in the health system. An estimated 10 percent of the jobs in the Birmingham-Hoover Metropolitan Area and 1 in 31 jobs in the state of Alabama are directly or indirectly related to UAB. The university's overall annual economic impact was estimated to be $7.15 billion in 2017.

The historic Southside community is situated on the hilly and forested slopes of Red Mountain just south of Birmingham, Alabama's central business district. The neighborhood includes the landscape from Railroad Park to the crest of Red Mountain, and from Interstate 65 to U.S. Highway 31 (or "Red Mountain Expressway"). It is one of the most densely populated residential neighborhoods in the city and home to the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) and its adjacent hospitals, the state's second-largest employer. The Birmingham Business Journal anticipated Southside to have the highest income growth of any zip code in the metro area.

Birmingham station is a train station in Birmingham, Alabama. It is a service stop for Amtrak's Crescent, which provides daily service between New York City, Atlanta, and New Orleans. The current station is located on the site of another station originally built by the Louisville and Nashville Railroad in 1960, although Amtrak did not use the building itself, which was torn down in the 2000s.

Rotary Trail is a half-mile linear park in downtown Birmingham, Alabama. The trail was predominantly funded by the Birmingham Rotary Club in honor of their centennial anniversary. The trail runs from 20th Street to 24th Street along First Avenue South and connects two major downtown areas: the 19-acre Railroad Park on one side, and Sloss Furnaces, a National Historic Landmark, on the other side. It opened in 2016. The entrance to the trail has a 46-foot-tall sign that reads, "Rotary Trail in the Magic City." The sign was modeled after the historical "Birmingham the Magic City" sign that previously existed in the city.
