The cave complex is noted for one of the best preserved floors from the Paleolithic containing more than 4,000 fossils and more than 500 graphical units. It is part of the Cave of Altamira and Paleolithic Cave Art of Northern Spain World Heritage Site.

El Astillero (English: "The Shipyard") is a town and municipality in the province and autonomous community of Cantabria, northern Spain. It is near the provincial capital of Santander, and it is known for its shipyard, and for hosting of Spanish national Rowing Championships. Its location is geographically defined by the estuaries that surround it. It is located between the municipalities of Camargo (formerly part of El Astillero), Villaescusa, Piélagos, Medio Cudeyo and Marina de Cudeyo. Located at the foot of Peña Cabarga, is 7.5 kilometres away from the capital, Santander, and is 20 metres above sea level. The confluence of the rivers and the coast of the bay is a large expanse of wetlands where various migratory birds nest throughout the year. The municipality covers an area of 6.80 km.

Mouro Island (Spanish: Isla de Mouro), originally Mogro Island (Isla de Mogro), is a small uninhabited island in the Bay of Biscay, located off the Magdalena Peninsula. The Magdalena Peninsula is a 69-acre (28 hectare) peninsula located near the entrance to the Bay of Santander in the city of Santander, Cantabria, along the north coast of Spain. The peninsula is a popular recreational destination for both tourists and locals. The historic Palacio de la Magdalena is located on the peninsula, which along with its surrounding gardens, is designated as a cultural heritage site. Also located on the peninsula is a small zoo, three galleons of the Cantabrian mariner Vital Alsar Ramírez, two beaches and a lighthouse.

The Palacio de la Magdalena (Spanish for Magdalena Palace) is a palace in Santander (Cantabria), Spain. Its construction was financed by popular subscription and given to the Spanish royal family for use as a summer residence. It was built by architects Javier González Riancho and Gonzalo Bringas Vega between 1909 and 1911. The palace is located at the Magdalena Peninsula in the place where the old Fort of San Salvador de Hano was, which protected the entrance to the bay. Since 1932, it hosts the summer courses of the Menéndez Pelayo International University. In 1977, the City Council of Santander bought back the palace and the peninsula.
