Wharf Area Historic District

Staunton station is an Amtrak train station in Staunton, Virginia, located in the downtown Wharf Area Historic District of the city. It is served by Amtrak's Cardinal, which runs between New York and Chicago. The station has restrooms and benches, but no ticket office.

The American Hotel was a historic hotel located at 125 South Augusta Street in Staunton, Virginia. It was built in the downtown wharf district, directly across from the railroad station. It has since been repainted and houses several different businesses. Earlier in its existence, the hotel had a set of two pillars in the front of the building.

The Augusta County Courthouse is a two-story, red brick, public building in Staunton, Virginia. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) in 1982. It was designed by T.J. Collins, and construction ended in the Autumn of 1901. It is located in the Beverley Historic District. It is the fifth court house constructed on the site, the first having been a log building constructed in 1755. The building has a two-story, four-bay central portico, with one-bay hyphens connecting to one-bay wings on either side, a domed cupola, with extensive ornamentation on the pediments and the capitals of the yellow, pressed brick columns. The entrances are on the hyphens, rather than the central pavilion, with a stone belt course around the entire structure. Design follows the Beaux Arts architectural style.Its historical significance is in its unique architecture, as well as its history and records, some dating back to the Colonial era.

Sears House is a historic home located at Staunton, Virginia. It was built about 1860, and is a 1+1⁄2-story, frame dwelling representative of a small "bracketed cottage" popularized by Andrew Jackson Downing. It is sheathed with board-and-batten and is covered with a cross-gable roof. It features long, shallow-scrolled roof brackets, a three-bay arcaded front porch, and a three-story octagonal-ended tower covered by a shallow hipped roof with dentiled cornice. It was the home of Dr. Barnas Sears (1802-1880), a prominent educator, who owned and occupied the house from 1867 until his death.The house was built by Col. Robert Lewis Madison, MD, and designed by his wife, Helen Banister Madison. Their son, Robert Lee Madison, founder and former president of Western Carolina University, in Cullowhee, North Carolina, was born there on February 17, 1867, shortly before the house was sold to Sears for $4,000.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972.

Breezy Hill is a villa in Staunton, Virginia. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) in 1982. It was designed by T.J. Collins, and construction lasted from 1896 to 1909 under the supervision of its owner, Mrs. Thomas P. Grasty. It has about 30 rooms and is built with a blending of Queen Anne and Victorian style architecture. It is a three-story, two-bay structure on a sloping, three acre lot, and is constructed of limestone, fieldstone, and patterned shingles, on a foundation of coursed limestone. The south bay is a turret with two Palladian windows on the second floor and includes the main entrance, and the north bay has a projecting gable. The lower story is uncoursed fieldstone, as is the second story of the turret bay. The remainder is fish scale shingles, unpainted and weathered. A one-story verandah with coupled Ionic columns and a balustrade with lattice-style railing wraps three sides of the structure, with a flight of steps in the front-center.Its historical significance is in its unique architecture, as well as its history.

Beverley Historic District is a national historic district located at Staunton, Virginia. The district encompasses 131 contributing buildings in downtown Staunton. It is a compact commercial district characterized by a well-preserved collection of 19th-century buildings. The buildings are characteristically two- to four-story, brick structures in a variety of popular architectural styles including Romanesque Revival and primarily Italianate. Notable buildings include the old YMCA (1890), Hoover House Hotel (1893-1894), Putnam Organ Works Store (1894), City Hall (c. 1877, 1927), Odd Fellows Hall (c. 1895), U.S. Post Office (1936), and the Masonic Temple building (1895-1896). Located in the district are the separately listed National Valley Bank and Augusta County Courthouse.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.

National Valley Bank, also known as United Virginia Bank, is a historic bank building located in Staunton, Virginia. It was built in 1903 and is a one-story, three-bay, Beaux Arts-style building constructed of granite, brick and carved limestone. Its design was based on the Roman Arch of Titus. It features semi-engaged, fluted columns of the Corinthian order flanking the central entrance. The interior features a coffered plaster ceiling. General John Echols (1823-1896) founded the bank in 1865 and served as its first president. His son Edward Echols, who built Oakdene, served as the National Valley Bank's third president from 1905–1915.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. It is located in the Beverley Historic District.

The Virginia Hotel was built in 1847 in Staunton, Virginia, and quickly became known as one of the finest hostelries in the commonwealth. Built on the site of the old Washington Tavern, the northeast corner of Greenville Avenue at New Street, the Virginia Hotel gained fame during the American Civil War as the headquarters of Stonewall Jackson, and served, alternately, as a hospital for Confederate soldiers and as headquarters for conquering Union Gen. David Hunter. It also served as a meeting point for several U.S. Presidents.After the war, the Virginia Hotel thrived under a succession of owners until, in the late 19th century, it was refurbished and renamed the New Virginia. In 1926, the Virginia's owner—Alexander T. Moore—announced he would demolish the historic structure to make way for a new hotel, which would adjoin the newer Stonewall Jackson Hotel (now the Hotel 24 South), of which he was also owner. Moore demolished the Virginia Hotel in October 1930, but the new hotel was never built due to financial constraints caused by the Great Depression. The lot sat empty for years, was used to house a gas station in the 1950s, and then built upon by the city of Staunton for a parking garage.

The Arista Hoge House (also known as Kalorama Castle) in Staunton, Virginia is a private residence first built in 1882, with a massive and historically significant facade added in 1891. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) in 1982. It is located in the Gospel Hill Historic District. Its historic significance lies in its unique architectureA Richardsonian Romanesque style facade of rough-cut brownstone with a metal gabled roof was added to the existing Italianate Style house. The facade is a two-bay, two-story structure with a full basement, while the main building is only two stories. The two bays of the facade are separated by a central stone chimney. The western side wall of the facade forms a rounded turret with a conical slate roof, and each story has triple one-by-one windows, round-headed on the lowest level and square-headed on the upper two floors. The eastern bay also has the triple windows motif, topped by a gable end with a round window. The front steps are on the east wall and recessed under an archway. The door has stained-glass panels and its landing is laid with colored tiles. The original building is brick Italianate, with a porch addition built in the 1890s, around the same time the facade was built. The building was deemed worthy of historical recognition as an example of the changing tastes in local architecture in the late 19th century, being a brick Italianate main house, with a Romanesque facade, a Queen Anne style side-porch and a western Colonial Revival porch.

The Trinity Episcopal Church, Staunton VA. is a Gothic Revival style building in Staunton, Virginia. It is an active Episcopal church in the Diocese of Southwestern Virginia. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) in 1972. It is located in the Newtown Historic District.

The Hotel 24 South is a historic hotel in Staunton, Virginia, opened in 1924.

Stuart House is a historic home located at Staunton, Virginia. The original portion of the house was built in 1791, and is a story, temple-form brick structure fronted by a two-level pedimented portico supported by four very simple and provincial Tuscan order-like columns. The house is five bays wide and three bays deep. The house has a large 2+1⁄2-story brick wing added in 1844. The wing is fronted by a gallery ornamented with lattice-work and supported on brick piers. Also on the property is a gambrel roof frame building, erected sometime after 1783 as Archibald Stuart's residence and law office, and a pyramidal roof smokehouse. According to family tradition, Stuart received plans or suggestions for the house's design from his close friend, Thomas Jefferson. Archibald Stuart died in 1832 and the house was inherited by his son, Alexander Hugh Holmes Stuart (1807-1891).It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972. It is located in the Newtown Historic District.
