Derrygorman

Dooncastle (Irish: Caisleán an Dúin, meaning 'Fort Castle') is a townland in the Parish of Aughagower and Barony of Burrishoole in Ireland. It is bordered to the west by the townland of Derrygorman in the Parish of Westport. To the north it is bordered by the townland of Sheean in the Parish of Islandeady. It is bordered by the following townlands in the Parish of Aughagower: to the southwest, Meneen; to the south, Knockroosky; to the east, Cushinkeel; and to the northeast, Doon.In this townland are the remnants of Doon Castle, a former stronghold of the McPhilpin clan. The railway line between Westport and Manulla Junction passes through the southern part of the townland, the N5 road through its northern part.

Sheean (Irish: An Sián (Síodhán meaning "a fairy mound")) is a townland in the parish of Islandeady, barony of Burrishoole, electoral district of Clogher, in County Mayo, Ireland. It has an area of 0.6 square miles (382 acres, 154 hectares) and borders the townlands of (clockwise from the north) Cogaula, Doon, Dooncastle, Derrygorman, Drummindoo, and Carrownaclea. The eponymous settlement is located on a hill. Sheean is located on the N5 road east of Westport, County Mayo, Ireland. Four parishes meet at Sheean – Aughagower, Islandeady, Kilmeena and Westport. There is also a tumulus in Sheean.Together with several other townlands Sheean forms an exclave of the parish of Islandeady, separated from the larger part by the territory of the parishes of Aghagower and Kilmaclasser.

There is little remaining of Doon Castle (Irish: Caisleán an Dúin, meaning 'Fort Castle'), situated on a hill in the townland of the same name, in the parish of Aughagower approximately four miles from Westport in County Mayo. In 1133, Cormac MacCarthy and Conor O'Brien invaded Connaught and plundered much of the country, destroying Dún Mughdhord (Doon Castle) and Dunmore.The Norman Castle of Doon appears to have been built on the site of the old Irish Dún Mughdhord. The castle has almost disappeared. The castle is in the townland of Dooncastle. According to local accounts, the stones of the castle were used by Lord Sligo in the building of Westport House. The castle is on a hill 150 feet in height and gave excellent views to the northeast to Islandeady and Aille, where the other McPhilpin castles were. The space on the hill is in the shape of an ellipse 40-60 yards x 20 yards. The castle was rectangular and measured about 40 feet x 27 feet. The space between the main castle and the outer fortifications was not great.According to Knox, the MacPhilbins held the castles of Ayle and Aghle and Doon in the Barony of Burrishoole and Bellabourke and the New Castle near Castlebar in the Barony of Carra.

Ardogommon (Irish: Ard Ó gComáin) is a townland in the Parish of Aughagower and Barony of Burrishoole. It is bordered to the east by Meneen, to the north, to the southeast by Ballinvoy, to the south by Coolloughra, and to the southwest by Ballydonnellan. All of these are in the Parish of Aughagower. It is also bordered by two townlands in the Parish of Westport: Derrygorman to the north, and Tonranny to the west.

Ballinvoy (Irish: Baile an Mhaí, meaning 'Townland of the Plain') is a townland in the parish of Aughagower and barony of Burrishoole. It is bordered by the following townlands: to the north by Meneen, to the northwest by Ardogommon, to the east by Knockroosky, to the southeast by the Deerpark, to the southwest by Mountbrown, and to the west by Coolloughra. All of these are also in the Parish of Aughagower.

Meneen (Irish: Méinín, meaning 'a stream') is a townland in the parish of Aughagower in County Mayo, Ireland. It is bordered to the east by the townland of Dooncastle, to the West by the townland of Ardogommon, to the south by the townland of Ballinvoy, and to the southeast by the townland of Knockroosky. To the north is the townland of Derrygorman.

Cogaula (Irish: Cagála) is a townland in the civil parish of Islandeady, County Mayo, Ireland. The townland has an area of approximately 1.5 square kilometres (0.58 sq mi), and had a population of 74 people as of the 2011 census.The local national (primary) school, Cogaula National School, is approximately six kilometres (3.7 mi) east of Westport, and had 36 pupils enrolled as of 2011.

Knockroosky (Irish: Cnoc Rúscaí, meaning 'Hill of the marshy ground') is a townland in the parish of Aughagower and barony of Burrishoole, County Mayo. It is bordered to the west by Ballinvoy, to the northwest by Meneen, to the north by Dooncastle and Cushinkeel, to the northeast by Cushinsheeaun, to the east by Mace North and Mace South, and to the southwest by the Deerpark. All of these are in the parish of Aughagower. The R330 road runs through Knockroosky. The national school for the parish Aughagower is situated to the north of this road.

Ballydonnellan (Irish: Baile Uí Dhónalláinn) is a townland in the barony of Burrishoole and civil parish of Aughagower, Ireland. It is on the R330 road between Westport and Partry. The townland is bordered to the north by Tonranny and to the northeast by Ardogommon; to the east is Coolloughra; to the south is Shanagh and to the southwest, Derrygarve. To the west is Knockfelim and Moyhastin.

Aughagower or Aghagower (Irish: Achadh Ghobhair, meaning 'field of the spring') is a small village in rural County Mayo in western Ireland. It is located about 6 km from Westport. Aughagower has around 40 houses, 1 pub and a shop, with a clear view of Croagh Patrick from Reek View. It also forms the centre of a parish of the same name which covers an area of 86.1 square miles. The village is known for its links to Saint Patrick and Tóchar Phádraig, the pilgrimage route from Ballintubber Abbey to Croagh Patrick.

Westport railway station serves the town of Westport, County Mayo, Ireland. The station is the terminus station on the Dublin to Westport Rail service. Passengers to or from Galway must travel to Athlone and change trains. Passengers to or from Ballina and Foxford must travel to Manulla Junction and change trains.

Cloondacon or Cloondachon (Irish: Cluain Dá Chon, meaning 'Meadow of the two hounds') is a townland in the Parish of Aughagower and Barony of Burrishoole in County Mayo. It is bordered to the northeast by Mace South, to the south by Tevinish East, to the southwest by Aughagower, to the west by Gorteen, and to the northwest by the Deerpark.Cloondacon is situated on Tochar Phádraig, the ancient route from Ballintubber Abbey through Aughagower to Croagh Patrick.The name Cluain Dá Chon refers to an ancient legend according to which a pagan chieftain set two wolfhounds on Saint Patrick. Instead of attacking Patrick, the hounds licked his hands. The chieftain was moved by this and became a Christian. According to an alternative version, St. Patrick made the sign of the cross over them, and the two hounds were swallowed up in an oval shaped hole called Poll na gCon (the hole of the hounds).
