Merrion Gates

Merrion Castle was a castle situated about 300m south of the present-day Merrion Gates, to the south of Dublin city centre. Built in the early fourteenth century, it was from the sixteenth century to the early eighteenth century the principal seat of the Fitzwilliam family, who later acquired the title Viscount Fitzwilliam. After the Fitzwiliams moved to Mount Merrion House in about 1710 the castle fell into ruin, and it was demolished in 1780. No trace of Merrion Castle survives today. It was located opposite Merrion Gates, on the site of St. Mary's Home and School for the Blind. Its location, and the modern site of St.Mary's, can be seen on historical maps, including the six inch (1829-1841) Ordnance Survey of Ireland maps.

Merrion (Irish: Muirfin) is a townland and suburban area located about 4 km south east of Dublin City. The townland has an area of approximately 0.8 square kilometres (0.3 sq mi).Merrion is situated along the Merrion Road between Ballsbridge to the north and Booterstown to the south. This stretch of road, about 1 km long, contains a shopping mall (the Merrion Centre), St. Vincent's University Hospital, a Catholic church (Our Lady Queen Of Peace), the Merrion Inn public house, a petrol station, a Bank of Ireland branch, a restaurant and several retail outlets.Merrion lies within the administrative area of Dublin City Council, and ends at the border with the Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council administrative area, near the Merrion Gates.

Merrion Cemetery, Bellevue (Irish: Reilig Mhuirfean) is a cemetery located on Bellevue Avenue off the Merrion Road in Dublin, Ireland a short distance to the north west of Booterstown. The recently demolished "Tara Towers" hotel was adjacent to the graveyard. The cemetery was in use from 1300 to 1866. Since 1978 it has been used as a public park under the care of Dublin City Council

Sandymount Strand (Irish: Dumhach Thrá) is a large strand on the east coast of Ireland, adjacent to the village and suburb of Sandymount in Dublin. It is part of South Bull - a major component of the south side of Dublin Bay, and part of the Dublin Bay Biosphere Reserve. South Bull is a mirror to the North Bull sandbank, which grew into North Bull Island. Sandymount Strand is a popular place for locals to take a walk. People, and in the past - there is no longer public vehicular access - cars, have been occasionally trapped by the incoming tide. A large inlet of water that remains even at low tide is known locally as "Cockle Lake".

Sydney Parade Avenue (Irish: Ascaill Pharáid Sydney) Sandymount, Dublin 4, Ireland runs from the land formerly known as Ailesbury Park opposite the Merrion Centre at the Merrion Road end, to the sea of Dublin Bay at the Strand Road. Ailesbury Road joins Sydney Parade at the DART station known as Sydney Parade railway station, originally opened in January 1835. Other side roads off the avenue include Richelieu Park, a cul-de-sac Ailesbury Park, Ailesbury Gardens, which joins with St. Alban's Park, and Park Avenue, the road to Sandymount village.The Ailesbury Park end of the avenue has been closed to road traffic, since the 1980s. The avenue was formerly spelt Sidney Parade Avenue.

St. Vincent's Hospital (Irish: Ospidéal Ollscoile Naomh Uinseann) is a teaching hospital located at Elm Park, south of the city of Dublin, Ireland. It is at the junction of Merrion Road and Nutley Lane opposite the Merrion Centre and adjacent to Elm Park Golf Club. It is managed by Ireland East Hospital Group.

Sydney Parade Railway Station (Irish: Stáisiún Pharáid Sydney) is located at Sydney Parade Avenue in Sandymount, Dublin 4, Ireland. The alternative spelling Sidney Parade is also in common usage. It serves the southern end of Dublin 4, St Vincent's Hospital at Elm Park and the RTÉ Radio and Television studios at Montrose, Donnybrook. There is a level crossing at the northern end of the station. The ticket office is open between 06:00-00:00, Monday to Friday. It is unmanned on Saturday and Sunday.

Booterstown Marsh, a Nature Reserve, is located in Booterstown, County Dublin, between the coastal railway line and the Rock Road. It is an area of salt marsh and muds, with brackish water. It includes the only salt marsh, and the only bird sanctuary, in south Dublin Bay. It lies just outside the boundary of Dublin city, and just north of Booterstown DART station and its car park. The marsh belongs to the residual Pembroke Estate, and An Taisce administer it, having acquired a lease in 1970-1971 and having designated it a bird sanctuary. It is part of both a proposed Natural Heritage Area (NHA) and a proposed Special Area of Conservation (SAC), and of the South Dublin Bay and River Tolka Estuary Special Protection Area (SPA).

The Merrion Centre in Dublin, Ireland is a shopping centre situated at the junction of Nutley Lane with Merrion Road. It serves the community of Dublin 4. It is anchored by the Tesco supermarket and the Japanese embassy is located in the centre. The centre was once home to one of the last remaining Quinnsworth stores owned by Peter Quinn of Nutley Lane. In the late 1990s, the centre underwent a renovation and a Tesco Ireland store was opened.A free underground car park is provided, with about a quarter of the spaces reserved for the office workers.The Tony Walsh pharmacy was used in the 2003 movie Intermission, but filmed to look as if it were outdoors.
