Gran Vía is a station on Line 1 and Line 5 of the Madrid Metro, located underneath Gran Vía and Red de San Luis Plaza in the Centro district of Madrid. It is located in fare zone A.

The Telefónica Building, in Spanish Edificio Telefónica, is a skyscraper in Madrid, Spain. It is located in Gran Via 28. At the time of construction it was the tallest European skyscraper with 89 m of roof height, until in 1940, when the Terrazza Martini Tower opened in Genoa.

The Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando (transl. 'Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando'), located on the Calle de Alcalá in the heart of Madrid, currently functions as a museum and gallery. The Casino de Madrid (Spanish: Casino de Madrid) is currently located in Madrid, Spain on number 15 Calle de Alcalá. It was born as a social club in 1836, outside of politics and with the intention of being a place where its members could congregate in peace. It was declared Bien de Interés Cultural in 1993.

The La Unión y el Fénix Español building, destined to be the headquarters of the former insurance company "La Unión y el Fénix Español", was one of the first skyscrapers in Madrid. Since 2006 it has housed the "Petit Palace Alcalá Torre" hotel, which belongs to a hi-tech company.It is located on the corner of Alcalá street and Virgen de los Peligros street. It was built between 1928 and 1931, based on the project of the Spanish architect Modesto López Otero, with the collaboration of Miguel de los Santos. Valentín Vallhonrat company carried the works out. The authorship of the sculpture that pinnacles the building refers to «sculptor Camps», whose identity is doubtful, it is unknown whether it is related to Vicente Camps Bru or Josep Maria Camps i Arnau. The building site was acquired for two millions of pesetas in 1928. One of the keys of the project was the integration of the new skycraper in a harmonic way with the adjacent church of Las Calatravas, both have shaped an urban entity. It is one of the more notorious works of López Otero and its design involves an evolution from López Otero's "regionalist eclecticism" of his first works to a more «mature» style, after traveling to United States or Vienna.A 12-story skycraper, it has a roof height of 173 feet (53 m). The nearest Metro station is Sevilla, on line 2.

Sevilla is a station on Line 2 of the Madrid Metro. It is located in fare Zone A. The station was opened on 15 June 1924 as part of Line 2.On 11 May 2019, the station was reopened after more than a year of extensive renovation works, during which three elevators were installed, making it fully accessible for people with physical disabilities. Additional improvements included an improved fire protection system and new toll gates.

The Church of las Calatravas (Spanish: Iglesia de las Calatravas) is a church located in Madrid, Spain. It was declared Bien de Interés Cultural in 1995. The external façade was revamped in 1866 following a project by Juan de Madrazo.

Line 2 of the Madrid Metro is a rapid transit line in Madrid. It first opened on 11 June 1924 and originally ran between Sol and Ventas stations.

The Banco Bilbao Vizcaya (formerly Banco de Bilbao) is a building located at Calle de Alcalá, 16, in Madrid, Spain. Projected in 1919 by architect Ricardo Bastida (1879–1953) and built from 1920 to 1923 for Banco de Bilbao, a constituent financial institution of BBVA. It was declared Bien de Interés Cultural in 1999. The rotunda features murals painted by Aurelio Arteta in 1922 and restored in 2003.

The Alcalá 20 nightclub fire occurred 17 December 1983 at 4:45 a.m. at Alcalá 20, a nightclub at number 20 Calle de Alcalá in the centre of Madrid. There were 600 people in the club at the time; 82 people were killed and 27 injured. During the fire, an exit on one of the upper floors was locked, and a main exit to an adjoined building was closed with an iron grill.The charred remains of the labyrinthine four story subterranean club remained intact but closed until 2003, when a major refurbishment was started. A remodelled two-story club, named Adraba, opened on the site in 2005 with improved fire safety. However it was closed down by city authorities after only three hours. In November 2007 the club was reopened, but was closed down once again within a few hours by the authorities. The club reopened under a new name in February 2010 after installing modern fire safety devices.

Teatro Alcázar is a theatre located in Madrid, Spain. Designed by Eduardo Sánchez Eznarriaga, it is located on the Calle de Alcala. It was founded in 1925, with the first performance occurring on 27 January with the operetta Madame Pompadour by Leo Fall.

The National Defence Council (Spanish: Consejo Nacional de Defensa) was the governing body in Republican Spain at the end of the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939). The council seized power with Colonel Segismundo Casado’s coup on 5 March 1939 when it was clear that the Republicans had lost the war. The leaders hoped to negotiate an end to hostilities with the rebel forces led by General Francisco Franco. However, Franco insisted on unconditional surrender, and on 26 March 1939 launched the final offensive of the Spanish Civil War. By the end of the month he controlled the whole country. Most of the council members escaped into exile on British warships.
