Denby Dale railway station

Denby Dale Viaduct is a grade II listed railway viaduct in Denby Dale, West Yorkshire, England. The curving viaduct carries the Penistone line over the Dearne valley in Denby Dale. The viaduct is constructed of stone, but the first viaduct to carry the line in that location was made of wood, being replaced by the current structure in 1880. The abutments of the former viaduct are easily discernible against the western side of the present viaduct.

Denby Dale is a village and civil parish in the metropolitan borough of Kirklees in West Yorkshire, England. It is 10 miles (17 km) to the south-east of Huddersfield and 9 miles (14 km) north-west of Barnsley. The village is the main village in the Denby Dale civil parish that also covers Lower Denby, Upper Denby, Upper Cumberworth, Lower Cumberworth, Skelmanthorpe, Emley, Emley Moor and Clayton West. The parish had a population of 14,982 according to the 2001 census, increasing to 16,365 at the 2011 census. The parish council gives the electorate of the village itself as 2,143. The River Dearne runs through the village; in the floods of 2007 it burst its banks on two occasions and caused damage to Springfield Mill.

The civil parish of Denby Dale covers the village. The parish council gave the population of the villages of Upper and Lower Cumberworth as 1,222 in the 2001 Census.

Upper Denby is a small village within the civil parish of Denby Dale, and the borough of Kirklees in West Yorkshire, England. Lying 11 miles (17 km) to the south-east of Huddersfield and 2 miles (3 km) south of Denby Dale, on an east facing slope of the Pennines, it occupies a position 820 feet (250 m) above sea level. The southern edge of the village is bordered by the Metropolitan borough of Barnsley within the county of South Yorkshire.

Upper Cumberworth is a small village in West Yorkshire, England, within the civil parish of Denby Dale and the Diocese of Wakefield. It is between the villages of Denby Dale and Shepley, above the village of Lower Cumberworth. It occupies a rural location, surrounded by fields and woodland but close to Huddersfield, Barnsley, Wakefield and Sheffield by public transport or road. The 2001 Census gave the population of Upper Cumberworth and Lower Cumberworth combined as 1,222.

Shelley College (formerly known as Shelley High School) is a coeducational upper school and sixth form on the border between the villages of Shelley and Skelmanthorpe, West Yorkshire in England. The school gained Academy status in September 2011, as Shelley College - A Specialist Centre for Science. However, as of November 2014, it is no longer a specialist in science. Unlike most high schools, pupils join Shelley College at Year 9, aged 13, because there is a middle school system in the surrounding area. The school has two main feeder schools, Kirkburton Middle School, which received a Grade 2 'Good' Ofsted report in April 2015, and Scissett Middle School, which also received a Grade 2 Ofsted report in November 2013. The school has departments for science and design technology. The sixth form has its own separate block, the Altitude Building, which holds a small café, study room (ICT suite), office and toilets. In February 2013, the school opened a new dining area and pastoral offices, followed by a new assembly hall and library in May 2013. The 2013 Ofsted inspection report awarded the school 'Outstanding', an overall grade 1.As of June 2018, Shelley College belonged to the expanding SHARE Multi-Academy Trust.

Ingbirchworth is a village in the Metropolitan Borough of Barnsley in South Yorkshire, England. It is in the civil parish of Gunthwaite and Ingbirchworth and is on the boundary of Kirklees in West Yorkshire. At the 2001 Census, the parish had a population of 400, increasing to 460 at the 2011 Census, and now estimated to be around 600. The village is notable for its reservoir, the eldest of the three situated in the area (the others being Royd Moor and Scout Dike). During extreme droughts in the summer the reservoir has been known to dry out to the extent that the old bridge over the original stream, Summer Ford Bridge, can be seen. Development is mostly laid out along two lines: older houses and farms along the former turnpike of Huddersfield Road (the A629) and newer housing estates along Wellthorne Lane. It has one pub, The Fountain Inn, which reopened in 2021 having been saved from demolition. There is an agricultural supplies and hardware shop on the edge of the village on Huddersfield Road. The Grange is the oldest extant building in the village, dating to 1624. This and a number of other properties in the older part of the village are Grade II listed.

Skelmanthorpe is a clustered village 8 miles (13 km) south-east of Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, England. According to the 2011 census, the village has 4,549 inhabitants.The village sits on the south (right) bank of the first river-like flow, from three small headwaters (uniting in the northwest corner of the parish), of the Dearne. It is part of the civil parish of Denby Dale in the Kirklees Borough, the main local authority.

Birdsedge (or Birds Edge) is a small village in the borough of Kirklees in West Yorkshire, England, on the edge of Yorkshire's Pennine Hills, standing just below 1,000 feet (305 m) above sea level. It is approximately 6 miles (10 km) south-east from Huddersfield and about 4 miles (6 km) north-west from Penistone, between the villages of Shepley and Upper Cumberworth and is linked with the neighbouring hamlet of High Flatts, a former Quaker settlement (and still home to a Friends Meeting House). Though originally an area of upland farms, woollen weaving and stone quarries, it is now a dormitory village for nearby towns and cities of Huddersfield, Barnsley, Sheffield, Wakefield and Leeds. Although the village has no industry it hosts Birdsedge First School, Birdsedge Wesleyan Reform Church and Birdsedge Village Hall. A mill operates in the village, part of the Z Hinchliffe mill complex located in the nearby village of Denby Dale.
