Chung Ling Private High School

Chung Ling High School (simplified Chinese: 槟城锺灵国民型中学; traditional Chinese: 檳城鍾靈國民型中學; pinyin: Zhōng líng zhōng xué; Pe̍h-ōe-jī: Chong-lêng tiong-o̍h; Malay: Sekolah Menengah Jenis Kebangsaan Chung Ling) is a secondary school in George Town, Penang, Malaysia. It was initially established in 1917 as a primary school, and later became a junior high school in 1923, becoming the oldest extant Chinese high school in Malaysia. Following the merger of The Chinese High School in Singapore in 2005, Chung Ling High School became the oldest surviving Chinese high school in Southeast Asia. Chung Ling High School was the only Chinese school in Penang to retain its all-male students only tradition. It was a hub of educated Chinese intellects, and was known to harbor radical political thoughts, from both the Kuomintang and the Chinese Communist Party during the Chinese Civil War. In the 1930s, the students of the school, as a response of the Japanese invasion of Manchuria and China, held anti-Japanese protests and demonstrations. During the Japanese occupation of Malaya, their past anti-Japanese sentiment resulted in retaliation by the Japanese occupation government, mostly in the form of forceful disbandment of classes, manhunts and a purge of its former staffs and alumni. The school reopened in 1946 following the end of the Second World War, and achieved its present academic peak during the 1950s and early 1960s, under the tenure of headmaster David Chen (1898–1952), a Chinese education reformer, as the leading Chinese institution of higher education in Southeast Asia. The teachers within the school were noted poets, leading intellects and university professors. Numerous graduates later became educators, Olympic athletes, ministers and important politicians of both Singapore and Malaysia. Chung Ling High School became a public-school under the British colonial government in 1956. As a result, a breakaway private school, Chung Ling Private High School, was founded in 1962. In 1967, the school was the first Chinese school in the country to introduce pre-university courses (Form 6). Computerization of the administration in the school was launched in 1983, the first in the country. In 1984, the government school was separated once more, forming Chung Ling Butterworth High School, a Butterworth-based co-ed high school for students based in Seberang Perai. Chung Ling has been categorized as a public school for students of excellent grades. It is designated as a Cluster School of Excellence since 2013, a recognition for the academic performances of the school, and one of four Chinese "controlled-schools" (admission-only under invitation) in Penang.

Ayer Itam (also spelt Air Itam or Air Hitam) is a suburb of George Town in Penang, Malaysia. Nested within the central valleys of Penang Island, it is located approximately 6 km (3.7 mi) southwest of the city centre. Ayer Itam is one of the well-known places to sample Penang cuisine, and includes a handful of major tourist attractions such as Penang Hill and Kek Lok Si Temple.The area now known as Ayer Itam was first developed in the late 18th century, soon after the founding of Penang Island by Captain Francis Light in 1786. British officials intended to turn Ayer Itam, including Penang Hill, into an agricultural area and established spice farms. To this day, fruits and vegetables are still grown at the hills of Ayer Itam; fresh produce are then brought downhill daily to the wet markets throughout George Town.

Rifle Range (Malay: Padang Tembak) is a residential neighbourhood within the city of George Town in Penang, Malaysia. Located within the Air Itam suburb, the neighbourhood lies 4.4 km (2.7 mi) west of the city centre and was completed in the 1970s. Formerly a shooting range used by the British Army, low-cost flats were constructed within the area to provide affordable housing for the urban poor.

Sunshine Central is a mixed-use complex within George Town in the Malaysian state of Penang. Situated at the suburb of Paya Terubong, the 3.64 ha (9.0-acre) 39-storey complex comprises a residential tower, an office block, a hotel and a nine-storey shopping mall forming the podium. Owned by local conglomerate Suiwah Corporation, Sunshine Central was opened to the public in 2024.

All Seasons Place is a shopping mall at Air Itam, a suburb of George Town in Penang, Malaysia. Opened in 2012, it is the first strip mall in Penang and forms part of All Seasons Park, a mixed residential-commercial development.The three-storey, open-air mall was designed by Cottee Parker Architects, a renowned Australian architectural firm. Most of the mall's retail outlets are arranged in a 500 m (1,600 ft) row facing the Thean Teik Highway with sidewalks stretching along the outlets and with ample of indoor and outdoor car park.

Green Lane is a major thoroughfare within the suburb of Batu Lanchang near George Town in Penang, Malaysia. Part of Penang Middle Ring Road, Green Lane starts from the intersection with Scotland Road and Air Itam Road, and stretches southwards to the Udini Roundabout within the Gelugor suburb.Once a quiet, leafy road, Green Lane has witnessed rapid urbanisation since the 1950s, turning it into an affluent neighbourhood. Even so, the road is still well-known for its greenery, with mature trees lining both sides of Green Lane, as well as its central divider. Green Lane is also where two of Penang's top missionary schools – Penang Free School and Convent Green Lane – are located.

Georgetown Specialist Hospital is a private hospital in George Town within the Malaysian state of Penang. Established in 2019, the 20-bed hospital at Green Lane offers services including internal medicine, nephrology, orthopaedics, gastroenterology, hepatology, endoscopy, urology and general surgery. The planned expansion of the hospital will cost an additional RM350 million and increase its capacity to 300 beds, as well as the addition of eight operating theatres to its facilities.

Han Chiang High School (韩江中学) is a Chinese independent high school in Jalan Han Chiang, Penang, Malaysia. The school was founded in 1950 by the Teow Chew Association of Penang and a local businessman, Lim Lean Teng. Teng gave the school and Han Chiang Primary School a piece of land measuring 33 acres (130,000 m2).The school is the first private Chinese school in Malaysia to be founded. It has a (sports) stadium, a "Just English" centre, a hostel, an event hall, three basketball courts, a library, five science labs, two computer labs, a music hall, a conference room and several multimedia rooms. All of its classrooms and facilities are air-conditioned. The school had about 1,000 students in the past decades, but it has recently soared to 2000 (approx.) students due to the availability of the IGCSE course. One third of the student population hail from foreign countries such as Thailand, Indonesia, Korea, Japan, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore etc. The private Han Chiang High School holds an entrance exam annually. Students wishing to attend have to take and pass the exam before enrolling.

The Ayer Itam War Memorial Park is a war memorial in George Town within the Malaysian state of Penang. Located at the suburb of Ayer Itam, the memorial commemorates the local Chinese who lost their lives during the Second Sino-Japanese War and the subsequent Japanese occupation of Malaya. The memorial was unveiled in 1951, with additional upgrades completed in 2011.

Penang Free School (PFS), located at Green Lane in George Town, Penang, Malaysia, is the oldest English-medium school in Southeast Asia. Founded in 1816, its academic achievements lead to its inclusion in the Malaysian Ministry of Education's Cluster School and High Performance School systems.This secondary school has been an all-boys school since its inception, although girls are now admitted for Form 6. In addition, the school has produced several notable Malaysian and Singaporean personalities, including Tunku Abdul Rahman, P. Ramlee, Wu Lien-teh and Wee Chong Jin; its alumni are known as the 'Old Frees'.Penang Free School maintains its historical rivalry with St. Xavier's Institution, another school in George Town which also claims the honour of being Malaysia's oldest school.

Ayer Itam Road is a major thoroughfare within the city of George Town in the Malaysian state of Penang. It is one of the main roads leading out of the city centre towards the suburb of Ayer Itam.
