Safari is a restaurant specializing in Somali cuisine located in the Harlem neighborhood of New York, New York. As of 2020, it is believed to be the only Somali restaurant in New York City.The restaurant opened in May 2015 and is located in an area called Le Petit Senegal, home to the highest concentration of West African immigrants in Manhattan. Owner Maymuuna Birjeeb was born in Kismayo, Somalia, and grew up in Sweden. Before opening Safari, she worked in banking. Decorations on the walls are relatively bare, noted by wooden wall carvings of the Osmanya alphabet. The restaurant's spices comes from Somalia.The restaurant has received positive reviews from critics. The New York Times described Safari as a "gentle introduction for diners unaccustomed to Somali cuisine." New York magazine praised "goat and the pasta, which tastes like carbonara without the bacon, are so good that it’s hard to resist wolfing them down." AM New York Metro described the restaurant as providing "diners with a rare Eastern-African culinary experience that is as authentic as one can find in the tri-state area."

Minton's Playhouse is a jazz club and bar located on the first floor of the Cecil Hotel at 210 West 118th Street in Harlem, Manhattan, New York City. It is a registered trademark of Housing and Services, Inc. a New York City nonprofit provider of supportive housing. The door to the actual club itself is at 206 West 118th Street where there is a small plaque. Minton's was founded by tenor saxophonist Henry Minton in 1938. Minton's is known for its role in the development of modern jazz, also known as bebop, where in its jam sessions in the early 1940s, Thelonious Monk, Bud Powell, Kenny Clarke, Charlie Christian, Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie pioneered the new music. Minton's thrived for three decades until its decline near the end of the 1960s, and its eventual closure in 1974. After being closed for more than 30 years, the newly remodeled club reopened on May 19, 2006, under the name Uptown Lounge at Minton's Playhouse. However, the reopened club was closed again in 2010. Remodeling began again in 2012.

The Harry Belafonte 115th Street Branch of the New York Public Library is a historic library building located in Harlem, New York City. It was designed by McKim, Mead & White and built in 1907–1908 and opened on November 6, 1908. It is a three-story-high, three-bay-wide building faced in deeply rusticated gray limestone in a Neo Italian Renaissance style. The branch was one of 65 built by the New York Public Library with funds provided by the philanthropist Andrew Carnegie, 11 of them designed by McKim, Mead & White. The building is 50 feet wide and features three evenly spaced arched openings on the first floor. The branch served as Harlem cultural center and hub of organizing efforts.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. In 2017, the branch was renamed to honor Harry Belafonte who lived near the branch. Another branch of the Library, the Schomburg Center holds Belafonte's archives.

Church of St. Thomas the Apostle is a former Roman Catholic parish church in New York City that had been threatened with demolition. It was the subject of a landmarks preservation debate. The parish was established in 1889; staffed by the Salesians of Don Bosco from 1979 to 2003; and closed in 2003 because of a diminished congregation and structural problems. In 2013, the premises at 260-262 W. 118th St., southwest corner of St. Nicholas Avenue, in Harlem, Manhattan was sold to a private developer. After extensive renovation, the church building is now used as a concert venue.

The Church of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal was a Roman Catholic parish, a part of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York. The church was located at 114th Street and 7th Avenue in Manhattan, New York City. The parish was established in 1927 to serve the Spanish-speaking community of upper Manhattan and the Bronx. It was the second parish established in the Archdiocese to serve this growing population, the first being the Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Greenwich Village. It was staffed by Vincentian Fathers from Spain. The parish was closed in the 1980s.

The Wadleigh High School for Girls, which was established by the NYC Board of Education in 1897, and which moved into its new building in Harlem in September 1902, was the first public high school for girls in New York City. At the time, public secondary education for girls was considered highly novel and perhaps a bit scandalous. Newspapers considered it newsworthy enough to devote many stories to describing classroom scenes of girls receiving “higher” education.

Le Petit Sénégal, or Little Senegal, is a neighborhood in the New York City borough of Manhattan. It has been called Le Petit Senegal by the West African immigrant community and Little Senegal by some people from outside the neighborhood. Le Petit Senegal is a smaller section of the much larger, and older, neighborhood of Harlem. The neighborhood's exact borders are difficult to define as it is still new, growing from nonexistent in 1985 to 6,500 by 2005. Le Petit Senegal is generally defined as located in Central Harlem. The neighborhood's main streets are the blocks surrounding West 116th Street between Lenox Avenue / Malcolm X Boulevard on the east and Frederick Douglass Boulevard to the west.Le Petit Senegal is the main shopping and social area for many of Harlem's West African immigrants. The majority of these recent immigrants hail from French-speaking Senegal, reflecting the French local name of Little Senegal. However, West African languages, such as Wolof, are also spoken. There are also immigrants from other West African countries, including Côte d'Ivoire, Guinea, Mali, Gambia, and Burkina Faso. West African shops, restaurants, bistros, bakeries, cafes, and other proprietorships can be found in the neighborhood.

The 1972 Harlem mosque shooting occurred on April 14, 1972, when a New York City Police Department (NYPD) officer was shot and fatally wounded at the Nation of Islam Mosque No. 7 in Harlem, Manhattan, New York City, United States. The officer responded to a fake emergency call, but was shot and died from his wounds six days later. The incident sparked political and public outcry about mishandling of the incident by the NYPD and the administration of Mayor John V. Lindsay.

Masjid Malcolm Shabazz, formerly known as Mosque No. 7, is a Sunni Muslim mosque in Harlem, New York City. It was formerly a Nation of Islam mosque at which Malcolm X preached, until he left it for Sunni Islam in 1964.

The 116th Street station is a station on the IRT Lenox Avenue Line of the New York City Subway. Located at the intersection of 116th Street and Lenox Avenue in Harlem, it is served by the 2 and 3 trains at all times. The 116th Street station was constructed for the Interborough Rapid Transit Company (IRT) as part of the city's first subway line, which was approved in 1900. Construction on the tunnel segment that includes the 116th Street station started on October 2 of the same year. The station opened on November 23, 1904. The station platforms were lengthened in 1910. The 116th Street station contains two side platforms and two tracks. The station was built with tile and mosaic decorations. The platforms contain exits to Lenox Avenue's intersection with 116th Street and are not connected to each other within fare control.

The 116th Street station was an express station on the demolished IRT Ninth Avenue Line in Manhattan, New York City. It had three tracks and two island platforms. It opened on September 17, 1879 and closed on June 11, 1940. The next southbound local stop was 104th Street station until June 3, 1903 and then 110th Street. The next southbound express stop was 66th Street. The next northbound stop was 125th Street for all trains. The express run from this stop to 66th Street was the longest express segment out of all New York City elevated lines, bypassing seven local stations.

The 116th Street station is a local station on the IND Eighth Avenue Line of the New York City Subway. Located at the intersection of 116th Street and 8th Avenue in Harlem, Manhattan, it is served by the B train on weekdays, the C train at all times except nights, and the A train during late nights only.
