Siltasaari

The Pitkäsilta (Swedish: Långa bron, lit. 'long bridge') is a bridge in Helsinki, Finland, connecting the districts of Kruununhaka and Siltasaari. It was completed in 1912 by the design of the architect Runar Eklund. Pitkäsilta is one of the best known landmarks of Helsinki. The bridge's name comes from near the end of the 19th century, when the district of Siltasaari was still an island. Two bridges led to the island, and bridge in the spot of the current Pitkäsilta was longer.

The Hakaniemi market square (Finnish: Hakaniementori, Swedish: Hagnäs torg) is a market square located in Hakaniemi, Helsinki, Finland, opened in 1897. Throughout its history, there have been numerous Vappu marches and demonstrations starting from the square, and it is an integral part of the history of the Finnish workers' movement. Many buildings near the square have been owned by Elanto and trade unions. The most famous buildings near the square are the circular Ympyrätalo office building and the Hakaniemi market hall. Opposite them, on the southern edge of the square, is the Metallitalo building. The Hakaniemi market square was originally built on reclaimed land, located where there used to be a strait separating Siltasaari from the mainland. The square was founded to support all kinds of trade. The first merchants appeared on the square in time for Christmas 1897. All kinds of food from berries to game are sold on the square. The services on the square expanded in the early 20th century, when tailors and cloth sellers appeared on the square; fishmongers came in the 1920s. During World War II the square was full of stacks of firewood as the nearby houses needed warming. In 1979 the square was renovated and repaved with cobblestones.The firewood stacks brought to the square were burned in a demonstration organised by the Finland–Soviet Union Peace and Friendship Society on 6 August 1940, which is known as "pinonpolttajaiset" ("the burning of the stacks").There is trade going on at the market square on every weekday. It also hosts a fair on the first Sunday of every month.A temporary glass pavilion was built at the square during the renovation of the Hakaniemi market hall for the market sellers, starting from 2017. The city council approved the plan in June 2016.

Hakaniemenranta (Swedish: Hagnäskajen) is a street on the Siltavuorensalmi shore in central Helsinki, Finland. The street belongs to two separate districts: the western part belongs to Hakaniemi in Kallio, while the eastern part belongs to the Merihaka residential area in Sörnäinen. The bronze World peace sculpture is located on the street.

Hakaniemi (Swedish Hagnäs) is an unofficial district of Helsinki, the Finnish capital. It covers most of the neighbourhood of Siltasaari. It is considered a part of the Helsinki city center. Historically, it was often associated with the working class and workers' associations. However, the cost of living has risen considerably in recent years and is now on par with that of the rest of central Helsinki. The best-known features of Hakaniemi include a large and lively marketplace, Oriental food stores with a good variety of Asian imported products the headquarters of several trade unions, the headquarters of the Social Democratic Party of Finland and the Left Alliance Party and the Helsinki Hilton hotel. Famous buildings include the round Ympyrätalo building (architects Heikki and Kaija Sirén, 1968) and the Hakaniemi Market Hall (architect Karl Hård af Segerstad, 1914). The Hakaniemi market square was built on reclaimed land. It has been the site of a farmers' market since 1897.

World peace (Finnish: Maailman rauha or Rauha maailmalle, Swedish: Världsfreden, Russian: Мир во всем мире) is a bronze sculpture donated by the city of Moscow, Russia to the city of Helsinki, Finland, created by sculptor Oleg Kiryuhin. The sculpture is located at Hakaniemenranta in Helsinki, and it was revealed on 14 January 1990, two months after the Berlin Wall had been broken. The sculpture belongs to the collection of the Helsinki Art Museum.The sculpture is 6.5 metres tall. It represents people representing different continents of the world holding the world decorated with tree leaves with one of their arms. The people in the statue have made fists with their hands not holding the world to represent a demonstration for the cause of world peace. The sculpture has caused much controversy in Finland. In 2008 it was chosen as both the third ugliest and the third most loved sculpture in Helsinki in a readers' poll held in newspapers.In autumn 2022 the sculpture will be moved away from Hakaniemenranta because of construction of the Crown Bridges project. The sculpture will be placed in storage and a pedestrian walkway will be built in its place. According to the Helsinki Art Museum, the sculpture will be returned near its current location after the construction.

The Hakaniemi market hall (Finnish: Hakaniemen kauppahalli, Swedish: Hagnäs saluhall) is a market building at the Hakaniemi market square in the district of Kallio in Helsinki, Finland. It was built at the start of the street Hämeentie in 1914.The market hall has undergone basic reparations since March 2018 and the reparations are due to be finished in autumn 2022. During the reparations, the market operates at a heated temporary building, which is due to be dismantled once the reparations are complete.

Hakaniemi metro station (Finnish: Hakaniemen metroasema, Swedish: Hagnäs metrostation) is a station on the Helsinki Metro. It serves the central Helsinki districts of Hakaniemi and Kallio. Both lines M1 and M2 serve Hakaniemi. There are 28 bicycle parking spaces at the station.Opened on 1 June 1982, Hakaniemi was among the first metro stations opened in Helsinki. It was designed by Mirja Castrén, Juhani Jauhiainen, and Marja Nuuttila. It is located 900 meters from the University of Helsinki station, and 900 meters from Sörnäinen metro station. The station is situated at a depth of 23 meters below ground level and 21 meters below sea level.

Paasitorni (Swedish: Folkets hus), also known as the Helsinki Workers' House, is a conference and congress centre of exceptional value in terms of its architecture and cultural history. The historic building is located in Hakaniemi, Helsinki, Finland. It was designed in Art Nouveau style by architect Karl Lindahl, opened in 1908 as conference and leisure premises for the working class, and for a long time, served actively as a workers' house. As a professional congress centre Paasitorni's functions have been developed since the mid-1990s. Today Paasitorni houses almost 30 spaces for meetings and events for 8–800 people, four restaurants (Paasiravintola, Paasin Kellari, Juttutupa and Graniittilinna) and hotel Scandic Paasi with 170 hotel rooms. A floating restaurant pavilion, Meripaviljonki, seating 200 was also opened in 2015 in front of Paasitorni, by the Eläintarhanlahti bay.

Österland (Eastland) or Österlanden (Easternlands), one of the four traditional lands of Sweden, was a medieval term used for the southern part of Finland. The term occurs in documents approximately between 1350–1470 and gradually fell out of use by the end of the 15th century. Before this period the term was used in plural, Österlanden, Easternlands.With the exception of Old Finland that was ceded to Russia in 1721, Finland remained a part of Sweden until after the Finnish war of 1808–09, when it was ceded to Russia and came to constitute the autonomous Russian Grand Duchy of Finland.

The Province of Uusimaa (Finnish: Uudenmaan lääni, Swedish: Nylands län) was a province of Finland from 1831 to 1997. It was established in 1831, when the County of Nyland and Tavastehus was divided into the Häme Province and Uusimaa Province. In 1997 it was merged with the Kymi Province and the southern parts of the Häme Province into the new Southern Finland Province.

The Aleksanteri Institute (Finnish: Aleksanteri-instituutti) Finnish Centre for Russian and Eastern European Studies is an independent institute of the University of Helsinki. It functions as a national centre of research, study and expertise pertaining to Russia and Eastern Europe, particularly in the social sciences and humanities. The Institute actively promotes cooperation and interaction between the academic world, public administration, business life and civil society, both in Finland and abroad. The Aleksanteri Institute was founded in 1996 and currently employs more than 50 scholars and administrative staff. The director of the institute is Professor Markku Kangaspuro.

The National Archives of Finland (Finnish: Kansallisarkisto, Swedish: Riksarkivet) is a Finnish government agency under the Ministry of Education and Culture. It is responsible for archiving official documents of the Finnish state and municipalities. It consists of three locations in the capital Helsinki and seven former regional archives, which were incorporated into the National Archives in 2017 and have since been its branches. The task of the National Archives is to ensure official documents forming a part of national heritage are preserved. It is the official Finnish authority in archiving, and promotes the preservation of documents located in private archives. In addition, the National Archives provides their stored documents for research use and participates in research and development activities. The National Archives is also the authority in heraldry. It ratifies all heraldic emblems used by the government, municipalities and church, and flags used by yacht clubs and military units. Its library has special collections on archiving, heraldry and sigillography. The archives was created in 1816 as part of the Senate of Finland. The present main building in Helsinki was built in 1890. The present Swedish name was adopted in 1939 and the present Finnish name in 1994. It was in 1939 it also became a central government agency of its own.
