Ogre (river)

Ogre Station is a railway station on the Riga – Daugavpils Railway.

Ogre () is the state city in Ogre Municipality (and previously Ogre District) in the Vidzeme region of Latvia, 36 kilometres (22 miles) east of the capital Riga, situated at the confluence of the Daugava and Ogre rivers. It has been a city since 1928. The population in 2020 was 23,273.Ogre is composed of three parts: Jaunogre (meaning "New Ogre"), Ogre (the center of the city), and Pārogre (meaning "Ogre across [the river]" though not all of the named region is across the river). The name of the city comes from the Ogre river. The Ogre village was first mentioned in 1206, called "Oger" in German. In 1861, when a railway Riga–Daugavpils was built, Riga's residents started to build summer cottages here. In 1862 Ogre became a health resort. The city's coat of arms was granted in 1938 and shows the river and pinewoods of Ogre. There is a cultural centre, an art school and a music school in Ogre. It has three Latvian language schools, and one Russian language school — Jaunogre Secondary School. The city also has a cemetery with the remains of German soldiers who died during the First and Second World Wars, or died in captivity between 1944 and 1951. Ogre is the homecity for most recent (2016/17) Latvian ice hockey champions HK Kurbads.

The Ogre District (Latvian: Ogres rajons) was an administrative division of Latvia, located in the Semigallia and Vidzeme regions, in the country's centre. It was situated about 37 km east of the capital Riga. The principal city was Ogre with around 30 000 inhabitants. Historically a part of Riga District, it was split off during the Soviet occupation of Latvia in 1947 and then introduced as a rajons in 1949. Districts were eliminated during the Latvian administrative-territorial reform in 2009.

Pārogre Station is a railway station on the Riga – Daugavpils Railway between Ogre Station and Ciemupe Station. Pārogre Station is the only railway station in Latvia, from which the next station (Ogre Station) is visible.

Jaunogre Secondary School (Latvian: Jaunogres vidusskola) is the only educational establishment available for ethnic minorities in Ogre District with Russian as a teaching language.

Inčukalns Municipality (Latvian: Inčukalna novads) is a municipality in Vidzeme, Latvia. The municipality was formed in 2006 by merging Inčukalns Parish and Vangaži town, the administrative centre being Inčukalns. The population in 2020 was 7,640.On 1 July 2021, Inčukalns Municipality ceased to exist. Inčukalns Parish was merged into Sigulda Municipality and Vangaži town was merged into Ropaži Municipality.

Ikšķile (; German: Uexküll, Üxküll; Livonian: Ikškilā) is a town in Latvia, in Ogre Municipality. It was the first capital of the Roman Catholic Bishopric of Livonia, known by the German name of Üxküll. Saint Meinhard was the first bishop of Üxküll. In 1197, Berthold of Hanover, a Cistercian abbot of Loccum, was made the second bishop of Üxküll. Those days the town was the center of the upcoming crusading activities in the Livonian area. Bishop Berthold moved the episcopal see to Riga, before being killed by the Livs in battle. According to one theory of the toponym's origin, the Livonian language word Ikšķile denoted "the ford or islet(s), i.e. a place (on the Daugava River) where it was possible to cross the river, belonging to the son of the (local ruler) Ike”. The personal name Ike has the honourable meaning ‘age, lifetime’. The Ike family had a great power in Livonia. They controlled the military and trade traffic across the Daugava at Ykescola/Ykescole.Other sources have suggested that the placename Ikšķile translates from the Finnic Livonian words ikš-ķile (ikš = 'one', ķile = village) meaning "one village" or "the (one) village".

Ikšķile Municipality (Latvian: Ikšķiles novads) is a former municipality in Vidzeme, Latvia. The municipality was formed in 2004 by reorganization of Ikšķile town with its countryside territory, the administrative centre being Ikšķile. In 2010 Tīnūži parish was created from the countryside territory of Ikšķile town. The population in 2020 was 9,888.On 1 July 2021, Ikšķile Municipality ceased to exist and its territory was merged into Ogre Municipality.

Ogresgals Parish is an administrative unit of Ogre Municipality in the Vidzeme region of Latvia.
