University of Massachusetts Lowell

Lowell State College was a public college in Lowell, Massachusetts. It was established in 1959 and is the precursor to the University of Massachusetts Lowell. The founding of this new state school was the culmination of decades of institutional growth that began in 1894 with the establishment of Lowell Normal School (a two-year training college for teachers), continued through the transition to the four-year Lowell Teachers College in 1932, and concluded in 1959 with the founding of Lowell State College. From 1959 to 1975, Lowell State College served the region's need for comprehensive public higher education.: 89  It was not superseded in this role until the merging of Lowell State College and Lowell Textile Institute into one new organization—University of Lowell and then the University of Massachusetts Lowell in 1991.: 104  The Lowell State College campus continues to serve as the core of what is now known as the University of Massachusetts Lowell's South Campus. The final enrollment at Lowell State College was 2,353 students with 1,877 of them undergraduates and 476 of them being postgraduates. Lowell State College and its predecessor organizations—Lowell Normal School and Lowell Teachers College—together served as important economic, political, and cultural drivers to the region through the development of teachers to serve in schools in the region and the opportunities offered for further education in diverse fields as the school expanded. Located in Lowell, Massachusetts, one of the country's early sites of industrial manufacturing, the city was the home of diverse and rapid immigration as new waves of new people sought jobs in the mills.: 29  Spanning the period from 1894 to 1960, Lowell State College (and its earlier iterations) were one of the major institutions in this regional city in northeastern Massachusetts.

Allen House, also known historically as The Terraces, is an historic house at 2 Solomont Way on the South Campus of the University of Massachusetts Lowell in Lowell, Massachusetts. Built about 1854, it is one of the city's finest early examples of Italianate architecture. In the early 20th century, it was the home of Charles Herbert Allen, a prominent local politician. Since 1957, it has been owned by the University of Massachusetts Lowell; restored in the 2000s, it houses a gallery and event space used for university programs and is home to the university's Honors College. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.

Sampas Pavilion is an outdoor amphitheater located in the Pawtucketville neighborhood of Lowell, Massachusetts along the Pawtucket Boulevard, 25 miles northwest of Boston, Massachusetts, United States, and owned by the state of Massachusetts. The pavilion is located on the banks of the Merrimack River and is part of Lowell Heritage State Park. The seating capacity is approximately 1,000, consisting of general admission lawn seats and additional seating in the back. The venue has been in use since the early 1970s and has been used for events such as musical performances, ethnic festivals, and political rallies. The pavilion hosts a summer concert series, motorcycle rallies, and the city of Lowell's Fourth of July fireworks.

The Wannalancit Street Historic District is a historic district at 14-71 Wannalancit St., and 390, 406 Pawtucket Street in Lowell, Massachusetts. This section of Wannalancit Street includes a remarkably well preserved and distinctive 19th century houses, representing a cross section of popular architectural styles of the period. The most unusual house in the district is the round Jonathan Bowers House (built 1872); the oldest building is a c. 1853 vernacular Greek Revival cottage at 22 Wannalancit Street.The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1998.

The Wilder Street Historic District is a historic district in Lowell, Massachusetts. The section of Wilder Street between Westford Street and Branch Road contains a remarkable collection of large late 19th-century houses. About one dozen wealthy businessmen built elaborate houses in Queen Anne, Italianate, Stick, and Second Empire styles in this area, which was developed by its landowner, Charles Wilder, and it was considered one of the city's most fashionable addresses of the time.The district was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1995.

The Jonathan Bowers House is an historic house in Lowell, Massachusetts. Built in 1872 for a local businessman, it is one of the most unusual houses in Massachusetts, being a circular masonry building with Second Empire styling. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.

Grace Universalist Church is a historic church building at 44 Princeton Boulevard in Lowell, Massachusetts. Built in 1896, the building housed a Universalist congregation until 1973, when it was sold to a Greek Orthodox congregation. It is now known as the St. George Hellenic Orthodox Church. The building is a 2+1⁄2-story brick structure, with an eclectic mix of Romanesque, Beaux Arts, and Classical Revival details. Its single most notable feature is a 70-foot (21 m) masonry dome designed by Rafael Guastavino Sr. and supervised by Rafael Guastavino Jr. in 1895.The church is significant as a very early tile vaulted dome built by the immigrant architects Rafael Guastavino Sr. and Jr. in the United States. The church building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2011.

The Pawtucket Congregational Church is a historic church at 15 Mammoth Road in Lowell, Massachusetts. It sits across Massachusetts Route 113 from the Merrimack River at Pawtucket Falls on the site at which the Pennacook sachem Passaconaway once lived. The church was gathered in 1797 by those who did not wish to travel to the center of Dracut for worship. Pawtucketville was part of Dracut when the church was founded. The current church building was erected in 1898, and exhibits Queen Anne and Romanesque Revival styling; its tower houses a bell cast by the Revere foundry in 1822. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2007.Pawtucket Congregational Church is an open and affirming congregation of the United Church of Christ.

Founded in 1891, Lowell General Hospital is an independent, not-for-profit community hospital serving the Greater Lowell area and surrounding communities. With two primary campuses located in Lowell, Massachusetts, Lowell General Hospital offers a full range of medical and surgical services for patients. Lowell General Hospital is a member of the Voluntary Hospitals of America. Lowell General is affiliated with Tufts Children's Hospital in Boston.

Pawtucket Falls is a waterfall on the Merrimack River at Lowell, Massachusetts. The waterfall and rapids below it drop a total of 32 feet in a little under a mile, and was an important fishing ground for the Pennacook Indians in pre-colonial times.

St. George Antiochian Orthodox Church in Lowell, Massachusetts, is an Eastern Orthodox parish under the jurisdiction of the Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese of North America. St. George Church is one of several Eastern Orthodox Churches in the city of Lowell, along with Holy Trinity, Transfiguration, and St. George (all of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America).

The Tyler Park Historic District encompasses a planned residential development in western Lowell, Massachusetts. The development was designed by Olmsted, Olmsted and Eliot, and is centered on Tyler Park; this area is the only Olmsted design in the city. It is roughly bounded by Princeton, Foster, and Pine Streets. Except for a few early houses that predate the subdivision, the area was built out between 1888 and 1936, and reflect the architectural styles popular in the period.The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.
