Galerie Chalette was a private contemporary art gallery in Manhattan, New York, USA. It was founded by the married art dealers and collectors Madeleine Chalette Lejwa (1915–1996) and Arthur Lejwa (1895–1972) in February 1954. The Lejwas were refugees from the Nazi incursions into Poland and France. Initially, their gallery specialized in contemporary French and Polish prints and painting. Later they changed its focus to contemporary 20th century American and European Sculpture, and especially the work of Jean Arp."La Chalette" was perhaps best known for organizing important group exhibitions which were then offered to various museums around the United States, including Construction and Geometry in Painting (1960), and Structured Sculpture (1960, 1968), as well as their major Arp exhibition, Jean Arp : from the collections of Mme. Marguerite Arp and Arthur and Madeleine Lejwa, at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, in 1972.The gallery closed in 1978.

89th Street is a one-way street running westbound from the East River to Riverside Drive, overlooking the Hudson River, in the New York City borough of Manhattan. The street is interrupted by Central Park. It runs through the Upper West Side, Carnegie Hill and Yorkville neighborhoods. The street's western terminal is on Riverside Drive overlooking Riverside Park and the Hudson River at the site of the Classical marble Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument. The first building on the north side of the street at its western end is 173-175 Riverside Drive, a co-operative apartment building with entrances on both 89th and 90th Streets. On the south side of the street stands the former Isaac Rice mansion, now Yeshiva Ketana of Manhattan and a designated New York City Landmark. The Dalton School, the Dwight School, and the Abraham Joshua Heschel School are all located on 89th Street. The block between Amsterdam Avenue and Columbus Avenue has the old Claremont Riding Academy, now an extension of the Gaynor School, the West Side Community Garden and the restored 1890s Public School 166, a much admired Collegiate Gothic building in glazed terra cotta.The block between Columbus Avenue and Central Park West is tree-shaded and lined with beautiful restored town houses. The corner of Central Park West is marked by The St. Urban, an apartment building "splendidly crowned by dome and cupola".To the east of Central Park, the street passes the 89th street facade of the National Academy of Design in a block of handsome town houses. Between Madison Avenue and Park Avenue is a handsome gothic Revival church, built by the Episcopalians in 1870, it became a Reformed Church and is now the Roman Catholic Church of St. Thomas More. The block between Lexington Avenue and Third Avenue has a row of "spectacularly romantic" Queen Anne style town houses.East 89th Street is cosigned as Fred Lebow Place between Fifth and Madison Avenues, honoring the founder of the New York City Marathon. This block also contains the offices of the New York Road Runners. The street ends at Carl Schurz Park on the East River.

The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, often referred to as The Guggenheim, is an art museum at 1071 Fifth Avenue on the corner of East 89th Street on the Upper East Side of Manhattan in New York City. It is the permanent home of a continuously expanding collection of Impressionist, Post-Impressionist, early Modern, and contemporary art and also features special exhibitions throughout the year. The museum was established by the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation in 1939 as the Museum of Non-Objective Painting, under the guidance of its first director, Hilla von Rebay. It adopted its current name in 1952, three years after the death of its founder Solomon R. Guggenheim. In 1959, the museum moved from rented space to its current building, a landmark work of 20th-century architecture designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. The cylindrical building, wider at the top than at the bottom, was conceived as a "temple of the spirit". Its unique ramp gallery extends up from ground level in a long, continuous spiral along the outer edges of the building to end just under the ceiling skylight. The building underwent extensive expansion and renovations in 1992 when an adjoining tower was built, and from 2005 to 2008. The museum's collection has grown over eight decades and is founded upon several important private collections, beginning with that of Solomon R. Guggenheim. The collection is shared with sister museums in Bilbao, Spain and elsewhere. In 2013, nearly 1.2 million people visited the museum, and it hosted the most popular exhibition in New York City.

The American Academy of the Fine Arts was an art institution founded in 1802 in New York City, to encourage appreciation and teaching of the classical style. It exhibited copies of classical works and encouraged artists to emulate the classical in their work. The mayor of New York city at the time, Richard Varick, and Gulian Verplanck, a New York politician, were some of the Academy's original organizers. Younger artists grew increasingly restive under its constraint, and in 1825 left to found the National Academy of Design.

The Church of the Heavenly Rest is an Episcopal church located on the corner of Fifth Avenue and 90th Street, opposite Central Park and the Carnegie Mansion, on the Upper East Side of New York City. The church is noted for the architecture of its building, location on Museum Mile, Outreach, Thrift, Music and Arts programs, and for some of its congregation members.

The 1973 New York City bomb plot was a plan by the Palestinian militant group Black September to detonate three car bombs in New York City at the same time Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir arrived there in March 1973. The bombs failed to explode, but the main suspect, Khalid Duhham Al-Jawary, was not caught until January 1991. The attempted attack was the first such Black September operation within the United States.

1067 Fifth Avenue is a luxury cooperative located on Fifth Avenue between East 87th and 88th Streets in the Upper East Side of Manhattan in New York City.

The National Academy of Design is an honorary association of American artists, founded in New York City in 1825 by Samuel Morse, Asher Durand, Thomas Cole, Martin E. Thompson, Charles Cushing Wright, Ithiel Town, and others "to promote the fine arts in America through instruction and exhibition." Membership is limited to 450 American artists and architects, who are elected by their peers on the basis of recognized excellence.

The Henry Phipps House was a mansion located on 1063 Fifth Avenue in the Upper East Side in Manhattan, New York City. It was constructed for Henry Phipps and demolished after his death in 1930. The entire marble facade was however stripped and shipped off by his widow to their daughter Amy's country estate “Templeton” to a field in Brookville, New York.Parts of the marble were later repurposed to renovate "Templeton" in 2013.

Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum is a design museum located in the Upper East Side's Museum Mile in Manhattan, New York City. It is one of 19 museums that fall under the wing of the Smithsonian Institution and is one of three Smithsonian facilities located in New York City, the other two being National Museum of the American Indian's George Gustav Heye Center in Bowling Green and the Archives of American Art New York Research Center in the Flatiron District. It is the only museum in the United States devoted to historical and contemporary design. Its collections and exhibitions explore approximately 240 years of design aesthetic and creativity.

The Andrew Carnegie Mansion is a historic house located at 2 East 91st Street at Fifth Avenue in the Upper East Side of Manhattan, New York City, New York. Andrew Carnegie moved into his newly completed mansion in late 1902 and lived there until his death in 1919; his wife, Louise, continued to live there until her death in 1946. The building is now the Cooper-Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum, part of the Smithsonian Institution. The surrounding area, part of the larger Upper East Side neighborhood, has come to be called Carnegie Hill. The mansion was named a National Historic Landmark in 1966.

The St. Thomas More Church is part of a Roman Catholic church complex located on East 89th Street, off Madison Avenue on the Upper East Side in Manhattan, New York City. The parish is under the authority of the Archdiocese of New York. Attached to the complex is the church (1870), a single-cell chapel (1879), a rectory (1880), and a parish house (1893). The church was built for the Protestant Episcopal Church as the Chapel of the Beloved Disciple in the Gothic Revival architectural style. Under various names, the church building has been used by three Christian denominations, including Episcopalians, Dutch Reformed, and Catholics. It is the second-oldest church on the Upper East Side.
