Derrygonnelly Harps GFC

Situated in Fermanagh, Northern Ireland, Carrick Church (Teampall Carraig) is approximately one mile to the north-west of the village of Derrygonnelly, on the shore of Carrick Lough. The Church is a late medieval structure built by the local chieftain of the time, Gilbert O'Flanagan II, and his wife Margaret in 1483 in 'Honour of God and Mary'. The O'Flanagan sept, who supplied many of the clergy for both Devenish and Inishmacsaint, were the chieftains of Tuatha Rátha. The territory of Tuatha Rátha covered approximately the area which is known today as the Barony of Magheraboy and their stronghold was situated at Baile Uí Fhlanagain in the townland of Aghamore on the shores of Carrick Lake.Much trouble plagued the descendants of O'Flanagan and the Annals of Ulster record that in 1528 Gilleece O'Flanagan and his son Turlough were both murdered in the chapel, on the same day, by Patrick O'Flanagan. Gilbert II may have built a church at Aghamore (the Great Field) as a private chapel but it raises the question; did he have a difference with his kinsman who was Prior on Inishmacsaint or did he build it for prestige? Gilbert II died in 1496 and when his wife Margaret, who was a daughter of the ruling house of the Maguires of Fermanagh, died, she was buried at the Abbey in Donegal. Carrick Church may have existed as a place of worship for the local people until penal times as there is no record of any other Roman Catholic place of worship in the area. Inishmacsaint church was taken over by the planters as Hume, the local landlord, did not build a church until 1688 at Drumenag. Despite the condition of the dangerous ruins the graveyard was utilized by the locals until around 1930. Many gravestones litter the grounds and some late 18th century inscriptions are still visible on the markers. Nearby to this ruin, there is a well by the name of Tobarnasuil, from the Irish Tobar na Súil, meaning "well of the eyes". Its water is said to have healing powers to cure ailments of the eye. Carrick Church and graveyard, in Aghamore townland, grid ref: H0962 5388, are Scheduled Historic Monuments. In December 2012 work, overseen by the Ulster Archaeological Heritage Society, was completed to secure the deteriorated ruins and prevent further collapse.

Derrygonnelly (from Irish Doire Ó gConaíle, meaning 'O'Connelly's oak grove') is a small village and townland in County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland. Near Lower Lough Erne, the village was home to 680 people at the 2011 Census and dates to the Plantation era. It is situated within Fermanagh and Omagh district. The village has a long history of Irish traditional music and each year in early October there is a celebration of local talent in memory of musicians Eddie Duffy and Mick Hoy. Musicians come from all over Ireland and from further afield to enjoy this festival which bases itself in any of Derrygonnelly's four pubs.

The A46 is a road in County Fermanagh, in Northern Ireland. It forms part of the route from Dublin to Ballyshannon (County Donegal). It stretches 23.6 miles from Enniskillen to Belleek along the southwestern shoreline of Lower Lough Erne. In Enniskillen the A46 connects with the following roads including the A4, A32 and the A509 road. The A46 road leaves the island town of Enniskillen and connects with the A4 which connects with Belfast and also westwards along the Sligo Road to Belcoo and Sligo. The A46 road runs along the Ballyshannon Road which has a park on the left called Brooke Park and The Round O. Portora Royal School is on a drumlin to the right of the road continues northwesterly leaving the Enniskillen at Silverhill before heading into the countryside of the Ulster Lakeland, with farms and golf courses and woodland and glimpses of Lower Lough Erne. Further along nearer to Belleek the opposite shore has the mountains of County Donegal in view whilst the road is below some of the County Fermanagh mountains. The mountains recede from view as farmland and villages appear the road and the River Erne is on the right then links into Corrycross Roads and the B52 to Belcoo and the A47 road into Belleek, the road then continues into Ballyshannon in County Donegal as the N3 which links into the N15 and into Bundoran. In Ballyshannon the N15 heading northwards connects with Donegal Town. In Ballyshannon certain road signs have destinations A46 Enniskillen with N3 Dublin with the requisite single arrow pointing in the same direction.

Monawilkin is a townland in the West Fermanagh Scarplands in the Civil Parish of Inishmacsaint, Barony of Magheraboy, Northern Ireland. The townland has an area of 85.1947 hectares (210.521 acres) and has previously been referred to as Meenwilkin (1817) and Munadh Wilkin ("Wilkin's bog" 1834). Monawilkin is the best example of unimproved calcareous grassland (blue moor-grass) in Northern Ireland. This differs from other Sesleria-dominated grasslands in the UK in that it also includes species such as Euphrasia salisburgensis (eyebright). Monawilikin is also an important orchid site, contains the best inland site for moths and butterflies (23 species recorded) in Northern Ireland, and is the only Northern Irish site for Cupido minimus, the small blue butterfly. Consequently, this area was designated as a special area of conservation (SAC) and area of special scientific interest (ASSI). The Monawilkin SAC land cover comprises 3% water bodies, 5% bogs, marshes, and fringe water vegetation, 13% heath and scrub, 50% dry grassland, 14% humid grassland, and 15% broad-leaved woodland.

Glenkeel (from Irish Gleann Caol 'narrow glen') is a townland in County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland. It is situated in the south-west corner of the civil parish of Boho, in the land division of Old Barr, in the former barony of Magheraboy. It is situated within Fermanagh and Omagh district. Glenkeel is divided into the sub-townlands of Carrickaphreghaun, Carricknaboll, Cloghernavea, Lough Acrottan, Teeroe and Tullyveeny.This area is notable for its geological Karst features notably forming part of the Reyfad-Glenkeel cave system and Reyfad-Carrickbeg system. Glenkeel hill (373 m (1,224 ft)) is mentioned in several historical texts. The area still retains the tradition of peat cutting.

Aghakeeran (from Irish Achadh Chaorthainn 'field of rowan trees') is a townland in County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland. It is near Derrygonnelly, in the civil parish of Devenish and is situated within Fermanagh and Omagh district.

Knockmore (from Irish Cnoc Mór 'big hill') is an upland area and townland situated in County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland outside the village of Derrygonnelly, in the historical barony of Magheraboy. This area, together with the adjacent Barrs of Boho and most of the uplands in Boho parish, are described as the Knockmore Scarplands. The focal point of the area is Knockmore summit at 277 metres (909 ft). This area is notable for its flora and geology which is protected under an areas of special scientific interest (ASSI) designation, namely the West Fermanagh Scarplands ASSI and West Fermanagh Scarplands Special Area of Conservation (SAC). There are also a number of sites of archaeological significance, which have been recorded since the late 19th century.

Tully Castle (Irish: Caisleán na Tulaí meaning "castle on the hill") is a castle situated in County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland, near the village of Blaney, on Blaney Bay on the southern shore of Lower Lough Erne. The Blaney area takes its name from Sir Edward Blaney, who was among the English advance party sent to Fermanagh to organise the Plantation. Tully Castle was built for Sir John Hume, a Scottish planter. During the Irish Rebellion of 1641, the rebel soldier Rory Maguire set out to recapture his family’s lands. He arrived at Tully Castle with a large following on Christmas Eve, and found the castle full of women and children. Most of the men were away. Lady Mary Hume surrendered the Castle, believing that she had assured a safe conduct for all in her care, but on Christmas Day the Maguires killed 60 women and children and 15 men, sparing only the Humes. The castle was burnt and the Humes never returned. Tully Castle and village site are State Care Historic Monuments sited in the townland of Tully, in Fermanagh District Council area, at grid ref: H1267 5664.

Drumbegger (possibly from Irish Druim Beagair 'ridge of the little tillage') is a townland situated in County Fermanagh, Fermanagh and Omagh district, Northern Ireland. It is part of the civil parish of Boho in the old barony of Magheraboy and contains the sub-townland known as Oubarraghan.This area was designated an Area of Special Scientific Interest (ASSI 322, 17 August 2009) as a consequence of species-rich wet grassland.

Lough Erne ( LOKH AIRN, from Irish: Loch Éirne) is the name of two connected lakes in County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland. It is the second-biggest lake system in Northern Ireland and Ulster, and the fourth biggest in Ireland. The lakes are widened sections of the River Erne, which flows north and then curves west into the Atlantic. The smaller southern lake is called the Upper Lough as it is higher up the river. The bigger northern lake is called the Lower Lough or Broad Lough. The town of Enniskillen lies on the short stretch of river between the lakes. The lake has more than 150 islands, along with many coves and inlets. The River Erne is 80 miles (129 km) long and drains an area of about 1,680 square miles (4,350 km2).

Killydrum (from Irish Coill an Droma 'wood of the ridge') is a townland in County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland. It has previously been referred to as Kildrome (1659) and Killdrum (1695). This townland belongs to the land division of Old Barr in the area of Boho.Killydrum is notable for the holy well named after St Faber' called Tober Faber, and its associated bullán. The area is historically linked to the home or castle of a chieftain called O'Fialain.In the Ordnance Survey Letters of O' Donovan, the surveyor notes that (the virgin) St. Faber first attempted to build her church in Killydrum near the holy well, however the first days construction was destroyed overnight by an invisible being. A passing deer indicated that there was another place where she could build her church without threat and carried her books on its horns down to Monea. When the deer continued its journey across the Sillees river, it slipped on the banks and it took a while for the books to be re-attached. This slip was thought to be brought about by a genius or sheaver (shaver)who inhabited the river who did everything in his power to prevent the spread of Christianity in the region. Once St Faber understood this she cursed the river with sterility of fish and fertility in destroying human life and may it run uphill with the following phrase MI-ADH EISC A'S ADH BAIDHTE AG RITH ANAGHAIDH AN AIRD GO LA BRATHA. Another interpretation of the name Killydrum is 'church of the ridge' which makes sense in this context.

Noon's Hole (Irish grid ref H12684431) lies about 5 km northwest of the centre of Boho, in the townland of Old Barr in the parish of Devenish, County Fermanagh, close to the border with Boho parish. The cave is under part of the escarpment on the east side of the Glenade Sandstone uplands. At 81 m (266 ft), this pothole was thought to have the deepest shaft in Ireland, but this honour was passed to the nearby Reyfad Pot, which contains an entrance shaft of 88 m (289 ft). The continuation of the cave system (incorporating the Afternoon Series and High Noon's) contains 3.7 km (2.3 mi) of passage, and it connects to the resurgence at Arch Cave through three cave dives, making this system the 8th deepest in Ireland, at 108 m (354 ft).Noon's Hole was previously called "Sumera", meaning "abyss", but gained notoriety and a new name in the 1820s, following the notorious murder of Dominick Noone, whose body was thrown into the cave. Ordnance Survey maps still use both names.
