Chestnut Hill Historic District (Philadelphia)

Highland station is a SEPTA Regional Rail station in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Located at 8412 Seminole Avenue at Highland Avenue in the Chestnut Hill neighborhood, it serves the Chestnut Hill West Line. The Pennsylvania Railroad initiated service on June 11, 1884. The station is in zone 2 on the Chestnut Hill West Line, on former Pennsylvania Railroad tracks, and is 10.7 track miles from Suburban Station. In 2004, this station saw 32 boardings on an average weekday. More recently, usage appears to have doubled, but there is still considerable unused free parking in the Philadelphia Parking Authority lot (outbound side) and on the adjacent streets. The only shelter is a small Plexiglas hut on the inbound side.

The Vanna Venturi House, one of the first prominent works of the postmodern architecture movement, is located in the neighborhood of Chestnut Hill in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It was designed by architect Robert Venturi for his mother, Vanna Venturi, and constructed between 1962 and 1964.The five-room house stands only about 30 feet (9 m) tall, but has a monumental front facade, an effect achieved by intentionally manipulating the architectural elements that indicate a building's scale. Elements such as a non-structural applique arch and "hole in the wall" windows were an open challenge to Modernist orthodoxy, as described in Venturi's 1966 book Complexity and Contradiction in Architecture . Architectural historian Vincent Scully called it "the biggest small building of the second half of the twentieth century."

Chestnut Hill West station is a SEPTA Regional Rail station in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Located at 9 West Evergreen Avenue in the Chestnut Hill neighborhood, it serves the Chestnut Hill West Line. It was originally built by the Philadelphia, Germantown and Chestnut Hill Railroad between 1883 and 1884, and later acquired by the Pennsylvania Railroad. In 1918, when the line was electrified, the station was rebuilt to accommodate the upgrade.The station is in zone 2 on the Chestnut Hill West Line, on former Pennsylvania Railroad tracks, and is 11.3 track miles from Suburban Station. In 2013, this station saw 433 boardings and 479 alightings on an average weekday.

The Margaret Esherick House in Philadelphia is one of the most studied of the nine built houses designed by American architect Louis Kahn. Commissioned by Chestnut Hill bookstore owner Margaret Esherick, the house was completed in 1961. In 2023, the house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places by the United States Department of the Interior. The house is noted especially for its spatial organization and for the ventilation and natural lighting provided by its unusual window and shutter configuration. A sunken bathtub doubled as a seat. A kitchen of wood and copper was created for the house by Wharton Esherick, a nationally known craftsman and artist.

The 1907 U.S. Open was the thirteenth U.S. Open, held June 20–21 at Philadelphia Cricket Club in Chestnut Hill, Pennsylvania, a neighborhood of northwest Philadelphia. Alec Ross posted four sub-80 rounds to win his only major title, two strokes ahead of runner-up Gilbert Nicholls.After the first 36 holes on Thursday, Ross owned a one-shot lead over Jack Hobens, who recorded the first hole-in-one in U.S. Open history in the second round. Hobens led Nicholls by one after the third round on Friday morning, but an 85 in the afternoon dropped him to fourth place. Ross began the round two behind Hobens and shot a 76 to prevail by two over Nicholls, who shot 79. Ross' older brother Donald, the famed golf course architect, finished tenth.Defending champion Alex Smith opted to play in the Open Championship in England, held on the same two days at Hoylake.

The 1910 U.S. Open was the sixteenth U.S. Open, held June 17–20 at Philadelphia Cricket Club in Chestnut Hill, Pennsylvania, a neighborhood of northwest Philadelphia. Alex Smith, the champion four years earlier, prevailed in an 18-hole playoff over his younger brother Macdonald Smith and 18-year-old John McDermott to win his second U.S. Open.On Friday, Alex Smith opened with a pair of 73's to take the 36-hole lead by two shots ahead of McDermott, Gilbert Nicholls, Fred McLeod, and Tom Anderson.Smith carded a 79 in the third round on Saturday morning that left him two behind McDermott, who shot a 75 for 223. In the final round that afternoon, McDermott was the first to finish and posted another 75 and a 298 total. Macdonald Smith shot 71 that also placed him at 298. McLeod had a chance to also post 298 after driving the final hole, but his putt for a two stayed out and he finished a shot back. Alex Smith also drove the green at the last needing only a two-putt to win, but he missed from 18 inches (45 cm) and tied with McDermott and his brother. Alex was not fazed by the near-miss; in the Monday playoff, his 71 beat McDermott by four and Macdonald by six. McDermott won the next two U.S. Opens; he was the first American-born winner and remains the youngest champion (19) through 2016. Four-time champion Willie Anderson played in his final U.S. Open and finished eleventh; he died four months later of epilepsy at age 31. The course also hosted in 1907 and is the present-day St. Martin's course, now nine holes.

Saint Martins station is a SEPTA Regional Rail station in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Located at 311 West Springfield Avenue near the intersection of West Willow Grove and Seminole Avenues, it serves the Chestnut Hill West Line. The station was built by the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1883 and was known as Wissahickon Heights until 1906. The station and adjoining St Martins/St Martin's Lane take their present name from the Church of Saint Martin in the Fields, which stands a few hundred feet to the west. The station is in zone 2 on the Chestnut Hill West Line and is 10.9 track miles from Suburban Station. In 2004, this station saw 215 boardings on an average weekday. It serves numerous Springside Chestnut Hill Academy students daily. It is also a contributing property of the Chestnut Hill Historic District. The bridge that carries Willow Grove Avenue over the tracks was under repair from Fall 2005 to late Summer 2006, and has a 3-ton weight limit. The bridge was replaced in the summer of 2016.

Jenks Academy for the Arts and Sciences is a public K-8 school in the Chestnut Hill section of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and is part of the School District of Philadelphia. Jenks serves children from kindergarten through eighth grade and has a student population of about 600. There are two classes in each grade as well as specialized programs for life skills, inclusion/learning support and gifted support. Jenks students are required to wear school uniforms.

Chestnut Hill East station is a SEPTA Regional Rail station in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Located at 102–04 Bethlehem Pike at Chestnut Hill Avenue, it serves the Chestnut Hill East Line. The current station building was built in 1931 by the Reading Railroad, as a replacement for an earlier station that existed between 1872 and 1930.The station is in zone 2 on the Chestnut Hill East Line, on former Reading Railroad tracks, and is 10.8 track miles from Suburban Station. In 2013, this station saw 433 boardings and 479 alightings on an average weekday. Chestnut Hill East is often confused with Chestnut Hill West, which is a SEPTA station a few minutes away from Chestnut Hill East's location. Boarding statistics, however, show greater usage of this line than of the Chestnut Hill West Line by Chestnut Hill residents. Prior to rebuilding and electrification circa 1931, the stub terminal had three short passenger car tracks serviced by two platforms, a small engine terminal with a turntable, five-stall roundhouse and water tank, plus a few freight tracks serving storage buildings and a coal and lumber business.
