Galway ( GAWL-way; Irish: Gaillimh, pronounced [ˈɡal̠ʲɪvʲ]) is a city in the West of Ireland, in the province of Connacht. It is the county town of County Galway, which is named after it. It lies on the River Corrib between Lough Corrib and Galway Bay, and is the sixth most populous city on the island of Ireland and the fourth most populous in the Republic of Ireland, with a population at the 2016 Census of 79,934.Located near an earlier settlement, Galway grew around a fortification built by the King of Connacht in 1124. A municipal charter, received in 1484, allowed for the citizens of the then walled city to form a council and mayoralty for the city. Controlled largely by a group of merchant families, the Tribes of Galway, the city grew into a trading port. Following a period of decline, as of the 21st century, the city is a tourist destination and is known for hosting numerous festivals, celebrations and events, including the Galway Arts Festival.In 2018, Galway was named the European Region of Gastronomy. The city was the European Capital of Culture for 2020, alongside Rijeka, Croatia.

An Taibhdhearc is the national Irish language theatre of Ireland. It was founded in 1928. The word taibhdhearc appears as a gloss for the Latin teatrum (theatre) in an old Irish document, derived from roots meaning "dream" and "glance." The modern Irish for a theatre is amharclann. An Taibhdhearc is situated at 19 Middle Street, within the medieval city of Galway. It is built on the ruins of the city's original Augustinian friary. The rear wall incorporates a wall from this friary, including some carved stone window frames. The theatre is used for drama and music productions, and occasionally screens international films. The busiest period for the arts in Galway city each year is the two weeks of the annual Galway International Arts Festival.

The Port of Galway (Irish: Calafort na Gaillimhe) is a seaport situated in Galway, Ireland, serving as a significant center for trade, commerce, and maritime activities in the region. Located on the west coast of Ireland, the port has a historical background dating back centuries, contributing to its present-day importance as a key maritime hub.

Eyre Square (; Irish: An Fhaiche Mhór, also known as John F. Kennedy Memorial Park) is a city public park in Galway, Ireland. The park is within the city centre, adjoining the nearby shopping area of William Street and Shop Street. Galway railway station is adjacent to Eyre Square. The park is rectangular, surrounded on three sides by streets that form the major traffic arteries into Galway city centre; the west side of the square was pedestrianised in 2006.

Galway (Ceannt) railway station (Ceannt Station / Stáisiún Cheannt) serves the city of Galway in County Galway. The station itself is located in the centre of the city in Eyre Square. It is the terminus station for the Dublin to Galway intercity service and the Limerick to Galway and Athenry to Galway commuter services.

The Ceannt Station Quarter (Irish: Ceathrú Staisiún Cheannt) is a proposed urban quarter for the city of Galway, County Galway, Ireland. As the name suggests, the new district had been proposed to be built around the city's rail station, Ceannt Station, which was also due to undergo a major redevelopment as part of the project. The project was "abandoned" in 2012. In early 2020, it was reported that an updated planning application for the development site was due to be lodged with Galway City Council. The updated plan, titled "Augustine Hill", would cover an eight-acre site around Ceannt Station "if planning permission is granted".

Galway Lifeboat Station is located on New Docks, in the Port of Galway, County Galway, Ireland, established at Galway in 1996 by the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI). The station currently operates the B-class (Atlantic 85) Inshore lifeboat, Binny (B-853), on station since 2011.

Shop Street (Irish: Sráid na Siopaí) is the main thoroughfare of the city of Galway in the west of Ireland. It has been pedestrianised since the late 20th century.As its name suggests, it is Galway's main shopping street, and was one of the first streets in the city to develop a retail focus. Shop Street contains a number of old brick buildings, bright storefronts, and numerous pubs. The street name "Shop Street" is common in the Connacht region, being found in Boyle, Tuam and Westport as well as Galway. Street performers and buskers are prevalent on the street. Shop Street contains one of central Galway's best preserved ancient buildings, Lynch's Castle. This 16th century building was converted into a branch of Allied Irish Banks during the 1960s.Book stores on Shop Street include Dubray Books and Eason & Son, with Charlie Byrne's Bookshop on nearby Middle Street. As of late 2017, additional improvements and pedestrianisation works were proposed for Shop Street and the surrounding area.

Charlie Byrne's is a bookshop located in the Cornstore Mall on Middle Street in Galway, close to Shop Street and the Augustinian Church. Considered a "cultural reference point" for Galwegians and visitors alike, it houses more than 100,000 new and used books. Writers often launch their books here. The Irish Times has described it as "the destination bookshop in Galway city".

Pálás (English: "Palace") is a cinema in Galway city. It opened in 2018, and has closed in February 2025 due to financial losses. It is owned by Galway City Council and was operated by the Light House Cinema group, as part of the Europa Cinemas network of local art-house cinemas.

County Hall (Irish: Áras an Chontae, Gaillimh) is a municipal building on Prospect Hill, Galway, County Galway, Ireland.

Loam is a restaurant and wine bar in Galway, Ireland. It has had one Michelin star since 2016.
