Lough Feeagh

Lough Furnace (Irish: Loch na Foirnéise) is a tidally-influenced, meromictic, saline lagoon in County Mayo, Ireland, located south of Lough Feeagh. It receives freshwater inflow from the upstream Lough Feeagh at the base of the Burrishoole Catchment and tidal input of saline water from Clew Bay, through the Burrishoole Estuary. The lagoonal estuary is notable for the perennially anoxic deep water in the main inner basin. Tidal currents transport salty, dense oceanic water from Clew Bay into the inner basin and river inflows form a buoyant seaward surface layer. The large density contrast between these two water layers limits vertical mixing and the salty, dense bottom water becomes isolated and develops stagnant, anoxic conditions. Given the highly unusual physical environment, Furnace has served as a model system for important ecologically-motivated research including the population dynamics of euryhaline invertebrates, a paleolimnological reconstruction of its evolution toward anoxic conditions, which appears to have occurred at ca. 3400 calendar years before present, divergent evolution in fish ecotypes, bio-physical interactions between benthic fish and internal waves and dynamics of sub-surface chlorophyll maxima.Lough Furnace is the lower part of the Burrishoole fishery. It contains salmon, grilse and sea trout.

Burrishoole Friary (Irish: Minister Bhuiríos Umhaill) was a Dominican friary in County Mayo, Ireland. Its ruin is a National Monument. Burrishoole Friary was founded in 1470 by Richard de Burgo of Turlough, Lord MacWilliam Oughter. It was built without the permission of Pope Paul II (term 1464-1471). In 1486, Pope Innocent VIII (term 1484-1492) instructed Uilliam Seóighe, the Archbishop of Tuam (term 1485-1501) to forgive the friars. Richard de Burgo resigned his lordship in 1469 and entered the friary which he had founded. He remained a friar until his death in 1473. This was not an uncommon occurrence, and serves to illustrate the connection between patrons and their foundations at the time.The church and the eastern wall of the cloister remain. The grounds of the friary are an actively used cemetery.Burrishoole Friary is a few kilometers west of the town of Newport, County Mayo. It is often called Burrishoole Abbey, although this colloquial name is inaccurate as because the Dominican order did not have abbots, Dominican houses are not technically abbeys.Almost all the friaries and abbeys across Ireland were suppressed in the wake of the Reformation in the 16th century. Very few were rebuilt after that time and now only the ruins survive, pleasing, if poignant, late Gothic relics of what must have been among the most striking buildings in the countryside of pre-Tudor Ireland.

Newport (Irish: Baile Uí Fhiacháin), historically known as Ballyveaghan and for many years also known as Newport-Pratt, is a small town in the barony of Burrishoole, County Mayo, Ireland. The population was 626 in 2016. It is located on the west coast of Ireland, along the shore of Clew Bay, north of Westport. The N59 road passes through the town. The county town of Castlebar is approx 18 km east of Newport. The Black Oak River flows through the centre of the town and there are walking paths along its banks.

The Seven Arches Bridge is a historic bridge in Newport, County Mayo, Ireland. Built around 1892, the bridge is a seven span squared red sandstone structure with limestone detailing over the Black Oak River/Newport River. It carried the Achill branch of the Midland Great Western Railway line, with the last train running on this line in the autumn of 1937. It was recently restored as part of the Great Western Greenway, the longest off-road cycling & walking route in Ireland.The bridge is listed as number 112 on the Record of Protected Structures for County Mayo.

Rockfleet Castle, or Carrickahowley Castle (Irish: Carraig an Chabhlaigh), is a tower house near Newport in County Mayo, Ireland. It was built in the mid-fifteenth century, and is most famously associated with Grace O'Malley, the 'pirate queen' and chieftain of the Clan O’Malley. The castle has been speculated as her place of death. It is also known as Carraigahowley, which means “rock of the fleet”.Rockfleet Castle has four floors and is over eighteen metres in height looking out towards the drumlins of Clew Bay. Though entry to the castle was once available to the public, it is now strictly prohibited for safety reasons. The castle was installed with a metal walkway in 2015, from its adjacent grassland surrounding to its door due to the sheer inconvenience of accessing its entrance during high tides. In 2017, the exterior masonry was pointed.

Inish Turk Beg (from Irish Inis Toirc Beag, meaning 'small island of the wild boar') is a private island in Clew Bay, County Mayo on the west coast of Ireland. Between 2003 and 2013, it was owned by Nadim Sadek, an Irish-Egyptian marketing entrepreneur. The island is approximately 10 km (6.2 mi) by road from the towns of Newport and Westport, County Mayo, and 67 km (42 mi) from Ireland West Airport Knock.

Knocknabola or Knocknaboley (Irish: Cnoc na Buaile, meaning 'hill of the cattle-fold') is a townland in the parish of Kilmeena which is located between Newport and Westport in County Mayo, Ireland. It is a small townland, of approximately 1.27 km2 (0.49 sq mi), in the Electoral Division of Derryloughan. As of the 2011 census, Knocknaboley had a population of 55 people.

Kilmeena (Irish: Cill Mhíona) is a civil parish and small village near Westport in County Mayo, Ireland. The area is served by a Roman Catholic church, an An Post post office, and a national (primary) school.

Clynish (Gaeilge: Claínis) is an inhabited intensively farmed island in Clew Bay, County Mayo, Ireland.

Collanmore Island (from Irish: Collainn Mhór) is an island in Clew Bay, County Mayo, Ireland.

Fahy (Irish: an Fhaiche, meaning 'a green field') is a small village in County Mayo, Ireland. It is approximately 7 kilometres (4.3 mi) north of Westport and has a national (primary) school and Montessori school. The local Catholic church is, together with Kilmeena, in the ecclesiastical parish of Kilmeena-Fahy. Fahy Rovers, a local soccer club, also has facilities in the area.The surrounding townlands of Fahy More (Irish: An Fhaiche Mhór) and Lugnafahy (Irish: Log na Faiche) are in the civil parish of Kilmaclasser.
